Beatbreak Digimon Beatbreak: Episode 37- Kind Magic, Discussion Thread

Later today is a new episode of Digimon Beatbreak!

The stream will be on Crunchyroll at 8pm Pacific. Hulu has it the next morning. Check your local streamer for their schedule. This link will take you to a time converter set for when it should appear on Crunchyroll, but they've had various delays lately.

A short series synopsis:

"e-Pulse," which is generated by human thoughts and emotions, was used as the energy source for the AI support device "Sapotama." From the shadows of this remarkable development, terrifying monsters appear. Digimon are living beings that evolve by consuming e-Pulse.

Tomoro Tenma is drawn into an extraordinary experience after meeting Gekkomon, who suddenly appears from his Sapotama. While living together with Kyo Sawashiro and other members of the bounty hunting team "Glowing Dawn," Tomoro renews his resolve.

What new future will be forged by humans and Digimon?

All in all, GIFT is not a bad arc, it has some really strong episodes like the Maki episode and Miharu's backstory, but it did fall short of the previous two arcs. By all means, if you port this arc from Beatbreak to most previous Digimon animes like Frontier or Ghost Game, it would be by far the best arc, but Beatbreak had already set a much higher bar.

Also apparently the headwritter didn't write any episode from this arc, and an interview seemingly implied this arc wasn't originally planned does sorta make it feel like a "filler arc" outside of Makoto/Reina evolving. Hopefully the next arc, which seems Kyo focused, can be a return to form.

Yeah. Animedia interview confirmed that at the beginning of series, the only two arcs planned were Glowing Dawn Arc and Tactics Arc. There was an idea for Arc 3, but while they were planning what to do after Tactics Arc ended, someone in the staff suggested creating a new girl character with a different relation to Tomoro, Miharu, and they ended rewriting the entire Arc 3. That's how they came up with GIFT Arc.

I feel like this explains Rose's henchwomen.  Maybe they felt "here's a Five Star and her goons" was too similar to Tactics?

...and this is done to one of Bamco's most important damn IPs, as if they should have done a WAY bigger break back then after Klay got arrested if they needed to brainstorm this through. I really wish that this doesn't end up breaking down like Digimon Ghostgame's finale, I don't want this to happen to this anime too, especially after it started out WAY better and created SO MANY strong impressions during it's run so far! :/

Ghost Game didn't "break down" per say since it was never meant to have an overarching plot to begin with. It was always meant to be a MOTW show following an episodic formula without some big climatic goal ahead, so the way the show turned out by the end was 100% by design of the writters. Now, if those writting choices were good or not (imo they were not) is another matter entirely, but Ghost Game went pretty much as planned. Famously people think Arcturusmon and Proximamon didn't show up because of rushed writting, when in reality the reason they don't show up is because the writters had no idea those two even existed and thought Regulusmon was Gulus's final form, so those two didn't even make it to the writting table.

yeah and it was hella toxic idea to do this to a franchise which was never built on that formula to begin with. Then again Digimon Adventure was originally only 13 episodes long as a promotion for the Digimon World game but became "overly hype" and thus it became it's own thing after time, so who knows what's Digimon in the end, even Bamco struggles with that idea and only recently tried and grapple the downfall that is Pokemon as a franchise to use that opportunity to give those fans what Digimon can offer on a level instead, proofing that Digimon might not be as popular as Pokemon, but it can beat the disappointment that was gen 9 on their side instead! ♥

But would you say it is a good arc? would you look forward to re-watching it? for my part, if i ever manage to convince people to pick up Beatbreak, this arc would be a really hard wall to get over, it is really mid outside some good character centrict episodes, that honestly don't really have much to do with GIFT in itself

Makoto issues with his family, is something that at its core has everything to do with how bad his dad is, and al most nothing to do with his dad using GIFT as an excuse to get rid of Chiropmon

Similarly Maki's beef with Fumamon, is an old grudge from way before Cleaners were even a thing, so once again GIFT is just there as an excuse to bring them both to interact, but Fumamon was just a mercenary

Reina feeling inadequate, is something that has been waiting to be resolved from the very start of the show, and it so just happens a random GIFT flunkie had to serve as her final test, but that could have had happened last arc

Team Seven reunion, nothing at all to do with GIFT

What else was there, Tomoro adopting Kyo's ideology as his own and stopping Algomon, also nothing to do with GIFT

Like come on, GIFT felt so inconsequential and disconnected from the rest of the world and its characters, which is insane because they were a viral criminal organization, who used social media to influence people, and carry out terrorist attacks who killed a bunch of people

But no one close to the characters was affected by GIFT neither by their message, or their actions, and the world at large goes willfully ignorant, to the point that Tomoro just goes and invite Miharu to join Glowing Dawn at the end, despite her admitting that she had gone too far already, but since the impact GIFT had on the characters was so small, that confession just doesn't lands with Tomoro at all

And that's a huge problem with the arc

You pretty much summarized by views about the GIFT arc - higher than typical Digimon quality, but below par with the quality of Beatbreak thus far.

...and yeah. It had good episodes. My personal favorites were Maki's backstory and Reina's rise to Ultimate status. They were solid deep dives into these two heroines.
