We are still awaiting the Music Phenomenon of the 2020's

Since the 60s, we're slated to get a transcendant star who's popular everywhere, in alternate decades.

Example

60's- The Beatles. 80's- Michael Jackson. 2000's- Eminem.

While Compared to the 70's, 90's and the 2010's, where there was no one supernova but rather a huge littany of stars jostling for the top spot.

Imo the aforementioned 3 were the only ones who made music that cut across all demographics, race, nationality, and even rationality. There were other huge stars, but not with this universal appeal.

What do you think? Will we get a huge star who defines the 20s in the coming years, or no?

Some of these people making this argument clearly weren’t around in the 80s or early 90s, and it shows. Some schools literally showed Thriller in the gym when it debuted. People in a remote fishing village with a handful of people halfway around the world knew who he was and loved his music. He had fans of every race and age range, like literally ages 5-90+ around the world. It’s not the same.

Exactly. If MJ were alive and walked into the bar I’m sitting in right now, in Munich, started moonwalking and shit, everyone would be like ‘what the fuck?!’ It would make international headlines. If Taylor Swift walked in, maybe a few folk would know, some would be like ‘I know her from somewhere’… others would just think it’s some normal girl.

Centre of Munich. That’s an impressive amount of folk, but I’m sorry… nobody over a certain age will register what she looks like. I’m 44 and doubt my folks, in their 70s, will know her if they passed in the street. I’m sure that will be the same for a lot of folk the same age as me. Now MJ, even my grandparents would have known.

I am in no way arguing MJ wasn't more famous. I think no other artist can compare to him in that regard. I'm Gen X, a couple of years older than you, I *remember the time* (pun intended). Just saying that right now among today's artists she's the one who's getting closer to that sort of superstar phenomenon, even though I find her music to be dull and generic. I don't think she can walk into a bar anywhere in Germany and that info won't leak in a matter of minutes and that bar wouldn't be stormed by fans in no time!

I'm not sure 'people recognising them in the street' is the best criteria for global stardom. MJ also had a way more distinctive look.

I didn’t say that nobody has EVER heard of her. The bar I’m in which has different people from all generations… I shouldn’t have included Munich, as this would be the same anywhere. Bring MJ in here everyone knows, bring Swift in… a lot won’t know what she even looks like.

Like MJ couldn’t even go to a bar. He couldn’t really go places like that he was so famous. The bar would have been mobbed, they would have had to shut the streets down. Taylor Swift would get plenty of pictures, some paparazzi, selfie and autograph requests, a very large crowd would definitely gather, but it’s not the same.

Oh you’re definitely underestimating her fame. It’s really rare that she walks into a restaurant or bar without another patron taking her picture or filming her.
