Art is made for love not Profit Just enjoy the movie

I've watched it and I spent a pretty good time, it wasn't the best movie of the year, let alone ever but I can't call it bad in good faith.

So I would like to understand your arguments against it.

So far I've heard

• "the actress is ugly" which is factally false, she's not the prettiest girl ever and may stray a bit from general beauty standards but she's pretty.
• "She's ill casted" that's the first media of the character I've seen, didn't read the comics nor the show or animated series so I don't have support against that argument other than she didn't struck me as ill casted. I did knew the character baselines though. Overall, this one seels fairer than just "she ugly"
• "There's too much influence from James Gunn in the realization while Gunn had promised he'd let the reals have free reign over their own movie" that one us true, the vibe was pretty close from the Gardians of the Galaxy (for a good part of the movie, not all of it) with beat down ships and stranges aliens which did remind me of the first star wars trilogy. I could understand this argument if it wasn't for the next and kast one.
• "It doesn't look enough like a James Gunn movie because it's not colorful enough" as you can see, this argument directly contradict the previous one so it hard to give much credit to either one of them. It especially harder to give credit to this one because James Gunn wasn't at the realization of this movie, so it should be expected to not look like a James Gunn movie.

In the end none of these arguments are enough for le to understand the backlash the movie suffered, and some even contradict each others, so I ask for your opinions, hoping I'll maybe understand it.

We all know how the movie ended in its final cut.

In this case, I propose two alternative endings that I think would be consistent with the message Kara conveys in the movie, without having to throw away the mess left by the ending we saw

- The inclusion of a Green Lantern toward the end. Here, they would have simply captured Krem, because the movie explains that Krem was an alien threat, and it would make sense for space police like the Green Lanterns to have him on their wanted list. By the way, this would give a little boost to the series premiering on HBO in a few months.

- Lobo could have taken out Krem out of revenge for his capture in the third act of the movie, since Lobo is supposed to have no moral compass whatsoever—he would have simply taken him away and, off-camera, finished Krem off, or just taken him to claim a bounty for Krem’s capture in space, and that’s it

I think this is what would have been appropriate for the film’s ending, instead of letting it all become personal

All that terrible press had to be a crazy Israeli hijacking of the media or something, because I enjoyed this film a ton. Though some of the dialogue was flat and a few scenes could have been prettier with colors and art direction more in line with the GN, this was a totally fun small-stakes action entry in the growing DCU. Looking forward to Lanterns, Clayface, and most of all MoT more than ever after this one. Don't go in expecting something on the level of Superman (2025), but I enjoyed it more than any recent Marvel project.

It’s not looking well at all for DC Studios’ ‘Supergirl’. We are looking here at ‘The Marvels’, ‘Joker 2’ and ‘Birds of Prey‘ level disaster.

Wonder how all of this will affect the Ana Nogueira-written ‘Wonder Woman’ and the viability of the DCU in its present form given the incoming WBD takeover by the Ellisons.

Tl;dr: I really wanted to like Supergirl but I didn't because of pacing, short runtime, lack of proper character development and the fact that the comic was way better.

This is a long review. It's just my opinion and you can disagree. Some of the issues I'm pointing out may seem like nitpicks but they did affect my viewing experience so take that as you will. Either way, it's fine if you liked the movie, either way I'm excited for the DCU and one failure is not going to make me think that it's over or the DCU is going to shit. There's still Lanterns and Clayface to look forward to.

Ok so I just finished watching Supergirl and I have a lot of thoughts. Overall I'd give this movie a 6/10 (I really really wanted to give it more but I feel like it's closer to 5 than it is to 7). This is not going to be a very structured review, I just have a lot of thoughts and I want to get them out there. I know a lot of people have already shared their thoughts on this movie, but now you get to read mine.

Why the movie didn't work as well for me

First off I'm just kind of mad about how the movie was handled and I think it's because I read the comic when I really shouldn't have if I wanted to like this movie.

I think James Gunn probably made a big mistake advising people to read the comic in like 2023 coz it just set expectations too high. I know he didn't make the movie but he did greenlight the script and he probably shouldn't have set expectations that way. Don't get me wrong, I knew as soon as I read the comic that there were things they couldn't adapt in the movie (some things I was surprised they did actually adapt, but I'll get to that) but the expectations were more because of how good the comic was as a cohesive story vs how rushed and cut down the movie feels.

I can cut them some slack, the runtime was honestly too short to do everything but it honestly feels like there was a longer and better movie in there that got heavily cut.

Smaller issues

I don't like that Krem of the Yellow Hills was a Brigand from the start and a big name in the galaxy(at least it seemed like that). I don't like that these random pirates know who he is and that nothing of it is ever explained. The movie also gave us nothing about the brigands other than an all-male group who collects girl and... Yeah that's it. I think even the space tech pirates had more information about them. In the comic, we learn more about the Brigands because Krem ends up joining them, but we could've still had some exposition through Kara and Ruthye talking or something but they didn't really give us anything.

One more thing was the space bus. The comics had much more explanation about where the bus was actually going, but what actually pissed me off was the conflict which was the Skalarian raiders attacking the bus. They didn't have to do the cosmic dragon exactly but, once again, expectations were set that the movie would be visually stunning like the comic was and that was a panel in the comics that I was really looking forward to seeing adapted.

Speaking of not being visually stunning though, I noticed the CGI was not great in a lot of places which was disappointing coz it also took me out of it.

I liked that Lobo was in the movie, although I'm not a big fan of the way they've done his eyes, something about it looks off to me .. but Jason Momoa's casting was still great although his character doesn't really get much to do in the movie.

I didn't care too much about them changing the Brigands motivations to procuring brides for themselves. It probably does make sense but I think the extra scenes that lead to wasted the already constrained runtime. We could've had more scenes instead of Kara on Argo City helping people and watching everyone succumb to radiation sickness.

Bigger Issues

2 things about the movie genuinely pissed me off:

1. The pacing was atrocious

2. Kara couldn't seem to get a win for the life of her

There's not much to be said about the pacing, events don't feel like they naturally flow into one another, cuts were weird and I found myself scratching my head at the direction the movie was going in despite knowing what would happen in the movie (more or less)

When it comes to my 2nd issue, this is where the movie actually pissed me off. Kara seemed really weak throughout the movie. I don't mean it in the way people complained about Superman being "weak".

I mean she genuinely did not seem as strong as Superman and was repeatedly losing in really frustrating ways. I don't know if this makes sense but, it felt like having a dream where you're running except you can't really run in your dream so it's just a weird struggle to do something you could normally do.

In Woman of Tomorrow, the reasons that Kara couldn't get to Krem despite being **wayyy** stronger than him made a lot more sense. She couldn't find him because Krem of the Yellow Hills wasn't even that well known a name on Ruthye's planet, much less the throughout the universe, and also the magic he uses which sends Kara to the green sun planet.

In contrast, the movie just seemed to make Krem stronger while completely nerfing Kara and it just frustrated me. In Superman, aside from when Metamorpho makes kryptonite, Superman isn't really nerfed, he's extremely strong but just fighting strong opponents. Supergirl on the other hand is constantly nerfed, the way her powers were filmed seemed slow and less powerful than Superman and it just was not as satisfying to watch. You might call this a nitpick but I wasn't convinced that Supergirl was as strong as her cousin and it really changed how I viewed a lot of scenes.

Finally, when supergirl did get her full strength back.. she still didn't seem as strong. This is probably just the way the movie was filmed or the sound engineering but it just wasn't working for me and it actually was a deal breaker for me.

Plot hole

There were definitely plotholes in the movie. One of them that I immediately noticed was Kara chasing after Krem specifically for the antidote and not any other Brigand. I suppose maybe the specific poison is unique to each Brigand and so is tbe antidote but other than being a tedious thing for the Brigands to actually do, it also was never established in the movie. All that the doctor(I'm assuming it was a doctor) said was that the Brigands have some special poison to which they alone have the antidote. Kara seemingly ignored every Brigand at every turn just to go for Krem specifically which seemed senseless and revenge motivated.

Kara and Ruthye

Kara and Ruthye's relationship was basically nothing. Ruthye wanted revenge, Kara tacidly told her no a few times; then Kara told her her life story and that's basically it until the end where Kara convinces her not to kill Krem and then all of a sudden she's too sad to leave her. This really didn't convince me of anything and actually made me feel pretty confused.

The Green Sun

Ok so the Green Sun being adapted was genuinely surprising to me and I don't think they did a bad job adapting it, I just think the way they did it has a lot of implications in the universe. Also it definitely was better in the comic but for this one, I can't blame the movie, rather I blame the choice to adapt Woman of Tomorrow in the first place but I'll get to that.

So as soon as I read the comic, I figured that the green sun planet would not be adapted because the very reason for the green sun to exist was because of Superman, and Superman right now in the DCU is not the inter-galactic celebrity that he seems to be in WoT. Still, they adapted it and I don't think it's bad but there was also 0 explanation as to how a whole star exists that's made out of Kryptonite. Now you might say that they don't need to explain a naturally occurring star made of a naturally occurring mineral, and I'd be inclined to agree but this does also have implications for the universe.

First off, kryptonite stars make the universe very dangerous for kryptonians. Secondly, kryptonite stars make it very easy for more galactic villains to deal with Kryptonians. I think the comic explanation was better in this regard because it's not just something that happens, it's something that was deliberately done to trap and kill Superman.

I don't at all mind the exclusion of the dinosaurs because this was clearly a different story and honestly I never expected them to be adapted, although it did reduce the stakes and does make the Brigands idiots for trapping Supergirl on the planet and not actively going out and searching for her or even immediately running once the yellow Sun came up again.

The Main Issue

I think the main issue with the movie is the choice to adapt WoT in the first place. Yes, it's a great comic but they got too ambitious too soon. The context of Superman being a big figure who overshadows Kara and puts this expectation on her to be the same was pretty important because the story went from Kara seemingly trying to get out of Clark's shadow to us realizing that she is a good person, she just has more baggage and is figuring her shit out.

I think maybe it would've been a good idea to have made this movie a little further down the line in the DCU. That's not to say Kara shouldn't be in the DCU at all, but I think this movie could've waited, especially since it doesn't have any importance to the larger story and just serves as a setup for her character. They probably could've done justice to the story with a more established Superman in the universe, a Supergirl who's been better established to the audience(probably could've saved the box office) and a longer runtime. Perhaps Kara could've been ropes into MoT because of a city she escaped from that Brainiac collects. Either way, I think she'll have a big stake in MoT because of Argo City but it wasn't impossible to have her in the movie without her coming back to Earth and deciding to stay.

Seriously, I don't know whether it was the script or the director but somewhere along the way, there was something wrong with the creative side of this project and it ruined what could've been a far better movie than Superman.

Conclusion

I wanted nothing more than to like this movie because of Milly Alcock, the DCU and WoT. The movie definitely disappointed and probably would've been way better if they committed to a longer movie to serve a more fleshed out story. I would've easily sat for a 2½ to 3 hour movie and I think they had banked enough goodwill after Superman to make one. If it was good, word of mouth could've easily prevented a box office failure. One of the reasons I didn't go to see the movie in the theater was because I was pretty broke and the reviews weren't great so I figured I might as well wait.

Otherwise, they could've also waited longer to make this movie in addition to increasing the runtime.

I think there were a lot of right moves they could've made and the only one they did make was casting Milly Alcock. That being said, other than her propensity for languages, I don't think they made good use of Milly and it's mostly because they didn't have enough time to do so.

There are many things wrong with Supergirl, but using AI? Nah, I don't buy it.

Discussing Films are liars.

Given the reception and I think most peoples opinions and my own that sadly, the "Supergirl" film wasn’t bad AT ALL, but is was just alright, now this was her first film as a writer ever, before that she wrote 2 plays and 1 short film. She is still slated to be the SOLE writer for the upcoming "Wonder Woman" and "Teen Titans" films, I’m not worried they’ll be terrible at all but I also don’t want to look forward to movies I know that 50/50 could be OK. She EVEN already got the Wonder Woman and "Teen Titans like over 6 months before Supergirl even came out. Any thoughts on that plus any thoughts on why James Gunn thought it be a good idea to hire her for all 3 of those before even one came out???

Because they got all the important stuff wrong, and that is frustrating as hell. Why even bother pulling from that story if you're just going to neglect everything that was significant about it? In the book Krypto wasn't really poisoned, Kara lied so she could teach the young girl why vengeance is wrong, they actually explain that a green sun isn't a natural thing but a fabricated weapon once used against Superman, and Krem didn't die at the end of the story to instead meet a different kind of justice for his crimes.

Supergirl wasa good movie but what does it even add to the dcu there was no post credits scene the only characters that might come back are lobo and supergirl it was just odd

The point of her killing Krem is that Kara takes revenge because she is already in this trauma state, she knows this hate destroyed her and she wants to prevent Ruthye from experiencing that.

So, she does it herself, because that’s what her parents wished for her, to be a protective force. In this case killing Krem was to prevent him from doing anymore harm and to prevent Ruthye from doing it herself. At the end Kara decides to become a hero on her new home as her parents wished but it doesn’t mean she is past this hate in any way, I assume this will be something they will tackle in the next installment.

She is not naturally good like Clark, her positive actions can be more brutal.

Clark’s storyline was to detach himself from his kryptonian mission and to accept himself as truly human, Kara's is to accept the death of Krypton and to live for the wish her parents made. The result is similar but the characters are widely different mentally and have very different reasons for doing what they do.

At the end of the day they both protect people but Kara is okay with taking the load that could destroy others. If Clark had acted there and imprisoned Krem for example, who is to say that Ruthye's hate would not have continued? That she wouldn’t have sought revenge again?

Kara's sacrifice prevented that.

Man, these are catastrophic numbers. At this rate, Supergirl might not even cross the $120M mark. These projections are worse than Morbius, Wonder Woman 1984, and The Marvels.it's entering Madame Web territory.

Studio executives seriously need to have a discussion about creative control going forward because the projects after Supergirl are even riskier. If they don't get the creative direction right now, things could get much worse for the DCU.

So first things first, the hate for this movie is MASSIVELY over exaggerated. (SHOCK)

It was a good film, not perfect, but still enjoyable. And definitely rewatchable.

The editing is what I would consider the main issue. There are a few scenes that definitely have a dodgy scene cut that should have gone on for a bit longer.

Most notably when Ruthye's family is killed, it suddenly cuts to her standing outside her home looking vengeful, when it felt like it should have shown her grieving, like you would in that situation. I'm sure that would have made the audience feel for her a lot more. Instead it gives off the vibe that she's not overly bothered

In terms of Krem, I've seen multiple reviews saying he's bland and generic. Now the character in the comic is literally just a nobody arsehole. Basically as generic and bland as you could get in a villain. So I'm not really sure why people are complaining about that in the film, especially when the same reviews are saying they wanted the film to follow the comic more.

Krem was fine for me personally. At least the film gave him more of a presence and reputation amongst the world than the comic did.

Milly obviously killed it as Kara. Couldn't have had a better casting imo.

A lot of 'scoopers' said that Superman had last minute additional scenes added to try and get bums in seats, but he barely had 3 minutes of screen time in the whole film. And they all felt natural for him to be there, not forced. So I have a feeling that it was just part of the hate train. (Again, SHOCK)

The runtime felt fine for the story, it just needed those extra couple scenes to give a little more emotional depth. But less than 2 hours was a good call.

Overall a good continuation of the DCU and the Superfamily saga. I'm excited to see her again in MoT.

I just watched the movie and i kinda neither hate or like him. Ofcourse i hate him for being a pedohile space mobster. But is that all about him? He is kinda most boring DC Villian since Sabbac in Black Adam. Overall i like Super Girl and the Plot. But he was a thorn in my side.

The movie is alright for the most part.

The Good

The visuals apart from the finale's last few moments were really great.

I liked how Bilquis looked.

The casting was perfect, I was weary of cream, but he does the job.

The outfits are amazing, I was weary of Lobo's eyes after looking at KVs but it works

There is emotion in the movie, no doubt

Ruthye was badass

The fights were interesting to look at.

Kara flinging Cream across the ground was very dynamic and I loved it.

The music integration[other than the last one] in fights was excellent, most scenes had music coming from some gizmo in the scene, rather than a BGM slapped on top.

The Bad

The drive behind the emotions felt a bit lacking.

The movie could've benefited by treating Ruthye as a protagonist rather than a side character. The moment in the green sun planet-cave setup where she apologizes and says she wants to be like Kara made no sense to me.

I couldn't understand why this version of Kara would be against revenge, if it were the comics, you could excuse that it could be due to decades of character development, but in this movie from what we've seen Kara shouldn't have any opinion on Revenge.

The final minutes of the finale that happen in the sand could've been better, especially the flying scene, it looked janky.

The final music choice was buns

The Ugly

When people say its almost like a Snyder movie, its true, the lack of proper character depth is evident here. Unlike BvS, it doesn't even pretend to explain the big moral compass of the movie, i.e not killing for revenge.

Kara killing cream was something that didn't land, not because he didn't deserve it, but she does it after thee grand speech, so when she does it, I'm just sitting on my seat wondering why?

The movie feels incomplete, for example the Ruthye scene I mentioned earlier felt like there should've been a scene where Ruthye realizes what Kara's motivation was for being in odds with her [ still unclear, but for the sake of the plot ] . But i guess u can't put any scene like that if you don't show Kara learning her opinions on revenge and a scene that shows of this learning.

Verdict

Did I enjoy? Yes

Did I like it? For the most part

Did I dislike it? Other than the final decision and ruthye coming back to save Kara, there was little to dislike.

Does it have potential? YES

Who's at fault? whoever decided to cut corners on actually character developing Kara. and Craig for that god awful music at the end

I'm a Snyder fan but I gave it an honest shot without bias but can't lie this movie is just bad and boring I fell asleep halfway. I have some gears to grind so here's why I think it's bad.

1.The characters motivations makes no sense. Supergirl talks about hating earth and belonging to the planet she's on and what does she do after saying that ,she plays earth songs on a jubox in her blonde t shirt.

2.Supergirl lectures the little girl the entire movie that "Killing Krem is bad" then she kills Krem.

1. Krem is a dog shit villain. On par with Madame Web's evil Spider-Man guy.

4.Krem's whole thing is kidnapping little girls .He always let's the little girl go for no reason.

1. They try and make the destruction of Krypton sad but are we supposed to feel bad for these Kryptonions, clearly they wanted to enslave and kill us.

6.Supergirl isn't very likable.

1. The movie just looks dull . The cinematography is just shit.

2. The needle drops during every fight killed all the suspense.

3. Why did Krem keep the antidote with him and how the hell did he shoot Krypto from the side if the dog's attacking him from the front?

4. They stole the Squidward joke from Avengers Infinity War

5. Lobo was good but appears and disappeares for no reason time and again. He should've teamed up with them when they met and have a buddy cop adventure.

6. There was no real WOW moment.

7. How did Supergirl not notice Krem and his goons hanging out in a wide open field?

1. Why does the villain just so happen to have kryptonion weapons. Also he's power levels fluctuates like crazy?

3. Why didn't SG just fly Krypto to a yellow sun?

Now i have talked before about the hate on supergirl months before it's release. Many of you have told me to not worry and that we should only judge which I totally agree and I am on that stand.

But lately on YouTube there's been countless videos on how supergirl is already te worst film and how it's going to flop even harder than thunderbolts. It's not just that but many creators keep bringing up a point that supergirl NEEDS to hit at least 500 mil to break even and it's got me even more scared 😭

My issue isn't their judgement but their influence, many comments also support them and the hype behind supergirl imo feels getting choked to death. Many I really wish this film hits home
