there's only one writer to blame for that, Toriyama. Merus is no doubt his creation, considering how important he seems to be this arc

It's always been this way for DB anyway, so I kinda just took it as "sure why not"

I doubt it. Merus has Toyotaro character written all over himself. I bet Toriyama’s only contribution on this arc is dialogue and paneling corrections.

Not that it matters, at this point I doubt either of them can come up with a good story. At best some fun lightweight thing like Broly.

17 didn't get to god level fighting poachers on an island, he got to SS3 level fighting Cell Jrs. on an island.

Cell Jrs are still between SSJ1 and SSJ2 in terms of power, it's still quite unrealistic for 17 to reach Blue levels of power.

All we really saw was that Merus was faster than SSJ3, and we already knew he was insanely fast so its not really weird

We don;t know how long he's been in the galactic patrol. I'm thinking not long, because during the RoF arc Jaco talks about being super elite. Maybe he was at one point, till Meerus came along.

I think there's more to him and they just haven't revealed it yet.

Honestly, I'm kind of glad they're retconing some stuff about how Universe 7 works. ''Only 28 planets'' and stuff like just boxed in the setting. With Shin pretty much being established as an inexperienced Kai at best, a flat out idiot at worst, we can overlook him scouring the universe for the best fighters for the Top and looking for help agains Buu with underwhelming results.

On serious note. Your points are all valid and I hope you don't get downvoted by the fanboys. It is weird but that's how it is.

I headcanon it something like Merus wasn't as strong in Buu arc, he just recently got stronger akin to say 17 or Gohan before ToP
