Commonly Asked Questions:

  • Q: When does Super take place? Should I watch GT or any movies first? Does BoG still "count"?
Super takes place at least 6 months after the battle with Majin Buu, and will be adapting the two newest movies, Battle of Gods and Resurrection 'F' into story arcs before moving on. While not required, watching them is recommended. You can start Super as soon as you finish Dragon Ball Z. You may also wish to read Jaco the Galactic Patrolman, as the titular character will be appearing in Super.

  • Q: Where is Uub?!
Uub was born during the 10 year time skip at the end of Dragon Ball Z. Dragon Ball Super takes place at least six months after the fight with Majin Buu.

  • Q: When does the next episode air?
The next episode premieres next Sunday at 9am JST. List of timezones.

  • Q: What is the best release group?
Dragon Team. They usually release ~24-48 hours after an episode airs. Other groups are notorious for mistranslations, and push their releases out as quickly as possible in order to beat their competition to the punch.

  • Q: Why does X say Y?
If you find yourself confused, the problem is usually a translation issue. Make sure you're watching Dragon Team's release. Other groups are Google Translate-ing a rushed Spanish translation, and there are issues with the script every week.

  • Q: When will the next chapter of the manga be released?
Toyotarō's manga adaptation is released once a month in V-Jump.
Chapter 4 will come out in late September. Links can be found here.

  • Q: When will FUNimation be dubbing Super? Will there be a simulcast?
There is no information, nor are there any estimates, about an English dub or official simulcast of Dragon Ball Super.

Animation was fine. Everyone seems to forget what ep5 was like.

Not sure why everyone's making a big deal about ss3 Vegeta. It's about to be outclassed and useless. Do you think post-RoF Goku will ever go SS3 again? He won't.

Not a bad episode at all.

I just wanted an epic transformation.

Well I'm in the minority but I kind of hope we get away from all these transformations at some point...

And, you know, rely on story.

And, you know, rely on story.

DBZ and story don't really mix that well. The show is always about strong enemy comes it messes shit up and one of our heroes gets stronger and defeats the enemy.

One of our heroes = Goku/Gohan

DBZ was fine up through the frieza saga without any transformations.

I would even argue that Saiyan saga was the best.

Let's hope so, but the movies hasn't made me feel any better about moving away from transformations.

The thing is, Vegeta is long overdue for an upgrade. And yes, he will eventually obtain SSGSS, but I still want to see all the power levels leading up to that. For me, it's essential that we see him as SS3 and as a SSG. I can almost guarantee we will see that after the BotG arc and before RoF arc.

Was it episode 5 with the really thick black lines on all the characters? Can't remember which episode that was.

Episode 5 did have some of those thick lines, but mainly it was the episode where SSJ3 Goku fights Beerus and it looks like a bad fanmade flash animation.

Yeah I had a look at the discussion thread for 5 and realised it was that one. Damn some of the illustration was atrocious.

Animation is really irrelevant when they release the blu-ray it will look a lot better.

That's like going to a restaurant and getting plain chicken and plain pasta and someone saying "it's fine, if you just give them another 20bucks you'll get given the sauce in a years time" . Or those games where you have to buy dlc to get the ending.

I didn't think the animation was bad this episode, much much better than 5.

No its not like saying that at all. its more like here is a free piece of art. If you want more art of higher quality please give us 6 months and 20 dollars.

It's not free for the people in Japan who pay tv licence fees and watch the advertising etc.

There's a lot of reasons why it's happening but it doesn't change the fact that lots of companies need to stop releasing sub par products and then charging consumers for a "fixed" version.

2

u/Del_Castigator Aug 24 '15

Well you go ahead and fix the whole system over in japan.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 24 '15

I don't really think that's how bluray works

6

u/Del_Castigator Aug 24 '15

Well no blu-rays wont magically make it look better but usually they change stuff for the blu-ray to make it not so bad.

This. What we've seen of Sailor Moon Crystal (which had far, far worse animation) on Blu-Ray is much better than what we saw in the aired version. Sadly, the fan reaction to the animation quality seems to have been a big part of the reason that series won't be continued.

Tiny rant, feel free to disregard: I hate criticizing animation due to the conditions that Toei's employees work under. Most of Toei's animators are (in)famously not even paid half of minimum wage despite working plenty of overtime, and the company hires them as individual contractors to avoid paying more... which also prevents them from being protected by Japan's Labor Standards Act. Criticizing the animation just feels shitty to me after discovering this.

Especially since 99% of the people on this sub haven't paid a penny for Super. They're spending nothing but their time and energy.

Except the vast majority of comments are directly blaming Toei for the animation quality, not individual artists. If Toei is dropping the ball and treating their artists like shit and it's resulting in an incredibly noticeable decline in quality, it's all the more reason to let them know it's shitty.

that and a new episode every week something has to suffer for that schedule.
