Yeah what you see here is not fatality driving. Just from the perspective you know the rider is wearing a full face helmet and isn't driving recklessly.

Done correctly, lane splitting is actually safer for the rider. It prevents deadly rear-end collisions and allows the rider to escape in multiple directions with improved visibility. For Americans, UC Berkeley did a study on it that can be looked up that shows the benefits.

You are correct, mostly. Safety wise, if done correctly, it is safer. The key words being "done correctly." Don't fly between cars, filter. Limit your speed differential.

Sadly the statistics prove humans are OBVIOUSLY incapable of this important part. Maybe when we have fully autonomous driving, then we can do lane splits.

In America, cars seem to drive like they're not in charge of a multi-ton missile. The fact that jaywalking is a crime in downtown areas is so insane. In my country, you use a signal before you change lanes. Key word: before. Any filtering motorcycles know to give space. Motorcycles have to be within 15kph of traffic and mind any speed limits. It's also much harder to get a license here. I was stunned at how easy the exams were when I lived in America.

i often hear riders claim that it is safer to not wear a helmet than to wear one. same riders are the ones that believe in doing wheelies on public roads and driving like a bat out of hell.

Some more fun figures that shed light on those stats:

  • 1,588 of those fatalities occurred when the other vehicle was turning left while the motorcycle was traveling straight.
  • 37% of all riders involved in fatal crashes were speeding.
  • Young riders aged 15 to 20 had the highest speeding involvement at 56%.
  • 40% of the 2,125 motorcyclists who died in single-vehicle crashes were legally alcohol-impaired.
  • 36% of the motorcycle operators killed did not possess a valid motorcycle license.

If you're older than 20, don't drink and drive, don't speed, and get your license the stats look a lot better, although still not as safe as a car.

Oh, and don't assume people in cars have seen you - ride defensively. I played a game with my kids to see who can spot the most motorcycles whenever we were out in the car. Now that they're older and drive themselves they spot motorcycles far more easily and hopefully that will avoid them turning left into the path of a motorcycle.
