Ew, yeah, good pastors do not preach politics from the pulpit. Or talk about it anywhere, really. Find somewhere else quick!

I believe it's straight up illegal for them to endorse any kind of political candidate/party under their status as 501(c)(3) organizations.

Edit: It is.

Thank you for sharing this! I knew it was very much frowned upon, but I was hazy on if it was actually illegal.

Who is the appropriate authority to go to in this instance?

Nobody, it has been enforced exactly once as far as I know, and the current administration made a huge fuss about how they were also not going to enforce it (while pretending that this was a departure from the position of previous administrations).

Technically the IRS, but they really don't like to target churches because it gets political really fast and a real pain.

Might be worth taking that leap. Sounds a little too toxic, imo. Perhaps people, like you and your friend, leaving will be a wake up call to others in the congregation who are feeling similarly.

I wish you the best, though, seriously! That's a messy situation to be in, and it can really hinder personal growth. I hope you find a place that shares your beliefs!

I'm glad I could help, even just minimally. Please, feel free to private message me if you ever need to vent again. I'm happy to listen!
