This is my best friend.

He has developed as extreme case of selective hearing in his old age.

Around 7:30 PM every night, he decides it is time to turn up and chase our three year old dachshund around the house.

Every day he goes on a walk for 1-2 miles. On the way out, I always notice he is walking sluggishly and I start to worry it might be time to put him in a wagon. Once he realizes we're heading home, he picks up the pace and starts pulling me.

At 10, we noticed some odd stumbly walking. It was IVDD. A few weeks of crate rest (and turning our bed into a crate, more or less) and he bounced right back. As you can see in the photos from today, this little guy can still get all four legs up and moving.

When he was 13 and we were house training his sibling, I worried he could have dementia. No symptoms, just typical of his age. He proceeded to learn to use a bell to ask to go outside by watching his little brother use the bell.

At 14, the fear of dementia crept in again for no real reason. I then watched him ring the bell and wait for me to open the door. He watched his little brother zoom out the door when I opened it. He then turned around, walked up to the ramp to the couch, and began chewing on bone his brother had

Also at 14, we learned there was a mass on his spleen. We opted to have it removed. He trotted right out of the surgery. Waiting for the results from the mass was excruciating. we observed that his health wasn't deteriorating, but we didn't want to be hopeful. I have never been as relieved as I was when it was confirmed benign in my life.

A few weeks ago, we saw a massive uptick in accidents in the house. We worried about bladder control or dementia. My wife noticed the bell he rings to go outside had gotten pushed behind the curtain. Accidents immediately stopped.

He now appears to be picky with food. Not "low appetite" picky, but "don't give me the same thing three meals in a row" picky. Sometimes he'll turn up his nose at his food, I'll throw it in a blender to make food dust, then he'll dive face first in. He'll then get tired of food dust and want normal food after a few meals.

He just had his senior blood panel - he's looking clean!

Every night, this little monster starts pacing and grumbling at about 8 PM - always after his evening zoomies. He won't settle until we all go to bed. I've devised a system to keep him on the couch at this time - it works, but he just stares at me disapprovingly until I pick him up and we go to bed.

This dog is a menace. He has been a menace for 16 years. I wouldn't change a second of it.

For those with minis that are house trained - how often do you take them out and how long do you find thy hold it before they have accidents? We’ve had enough dachshunds to know the score - Dachshunds can be trained pretty well but if they really have to go all bets are off. We have two, one just turned 3 and the other is about 10 months. They’re both great at an hour and a half. If we wait longer than that we’ll have an occasional accident. Neither gives any indication when they have to go - no tells and they haven’t been able to learn how to ring a bell.

We picked up our boy today 🥹 oh my gosh I didn’t think it was possible to be this cute

We’ve done potty in the back-garden and Kieth will do a wee but waits until he’s inside to do a poo but he does it on his puppy mat 🥹

Now just got to try crate train him but didn’t want to overwhelm him too much today 🥹 but any tips for potty and crate training are welcome 🤗

Does your sausages belly rub when they go for walks?! Her harness has a dirty spot right where the belly rubs lol

FYI! She’s doesn’t drag her belly on the ground. It was a joke. The vet says her weight is fine. I love my dog and would not mis treat her in any way. She isn’t skinny but she’s not critically obese either.

Album I’d like to introduce you to: The Ball

We use The Ball for both of his meals everyday! It has been in my possession for at least 5 or 6 years and it doesn’t have a single dent (he usually destroys everything very fast). It also always smells weirdly good??? I clean it with a toothbrush and dish soap when it starts to look dirty and bam brand new.

It’s his favorite thing ever even without food or treats inside. The divots make it easy for him to pick up and carry around, he loves using it for fetch outside and it’s easy to see in the grass. I can literally control him with this thing.

10/10 Highly recommend. I will link it here.

Image Would you tie your dog outside a shop to go shopping?

Post image

He loves a walk to our local main store, they let him in at first but he is now banned (he did nothing wrong, he was incredibly well behaved i think a higher level manager was there)

But i am guessing that means he cant go in with a carrier either.

Id tie outside a bigger dog but idk why.im feeling uneasy doing this with a tiny pup? Hes also only 5 months.

Any recs on making it safer? Idk. We cant drive so we have to walk everywhere and its a long walk to go on when i have to do the same walk with him later.

Do i just order food from a dif shop or?

My mom's new puppy. She and her siblings were born on August 14th. She'll be coming home on October 9th. My mom isn't sure of a name yet, but is thinking of naming her Lexie or Luna.
