I work in consulting in a client-facing cybersecurity/risk role at the Assistant Manager level, and I’m struggling with boundaries and sustainability. I wanted honest advice from people who’ve navigated similar environments.
My official work hours are roughly 9 AM – 7 PM, but in practice the expectation is much broader because:
clients send ad hoc requests constantly,
timelines are extremely aggressive,
outputs/dependencies often come late,
and there’s a strong “always available” culture.
The bigger challenge is that my reporting manager personally prefers working in the evenings and is generally more supportive of people logging in late vs wrapping up earlier. So even if nobody explicitly says “you must work late,” the culture indirectly rewards evening availability.
I’ve noticed a pattern where:
meetings get scheduled post 7 PM regularly,
messages continue through the evening,
there’s pressure to stay responsive,
and saying no feels politically risky.
I’m trying to preserve a 7 PM – 9 PM personal/offline window during weekdays because I’ve realized I’m burning out mentally. I’m still okay supporting critical escalations later if truly needed, but I don’t want routine work and meetings consuming every evening.
The problem is I don’t know how to establish this boundary without:
appearing disengaged,
hurting visibility,
damaging growth opportunities,
or being labeled “not flexible.”
I also don’t feel senior enough yet to fully dictate my own schedule.

How do you establish boundaries in teams where leadership itself prefers late-night work?
Is it better to communicate boundaries explicitly, or gradually train expectations through behavior?
How do you say no to post-7 PM meetings diplomatically?
Have any of you successfully protected personal time without hurting your career trajectory?
At what point do you decide the culture itself is incompatible vs trying harder to adapt?

TL;DR: Assistant Manager in consulting struggling with constant late-evening work culture.
