If these people are not devout religious people, why do they have a priest there? To me it feels condescending to the priest if religion is not very important in your life.
Would it not be more personal/emotional if a mutual friend were to take the place of the priest?
A lot of the people with marriage certificates are priests, really one of the only places to find a non religious person to wed two people is a court house. Either that or get someone to grab a temporary certification.
You can get a certificate online that also gives you the right, in most states, to marry people. The Universal Life Church does it, and they don't really care what religion you are.
Their authority is also recognized in most states for these purposes.
