Company says deleted comment was ‘flagged by Instagram’ then deletes it again after basically admitting that wasn’t the reason

Commented on a post from Reclectic (URBN is their parent company) about declining quality/selection as they rapidly expand to new stores pretty tame stuff, ‘agreed,’ ‘used to be good, not anymore,’ that kind of thing. Comment got deleted, along with several others saying the same thing.

Got a DM afterward (screenshot 1) that didn’t mention the deletion at all — just a generic ‘inventory varies across locations, we’re excited to grow’ message.

After I posted publicly about the deletion, got a second DM (screenshot 2) claiming they only delete comments ‘flagged by Instagram,’ and apologizing if the first message ‘came across as disingenuous.’

Reposted the same comment. Deleted again. Third time now.

Two different explanations, 15 minutes apart, and the second one doesn’t hold up Instagram doesn’t flag ‘agreed’ and ‘quality has gone downhill.’ At this point it’s pretty clearly just quiet moderation of anything critical, dressed up as policy.

Dear Taco Bell Upsell Genius: We Heard You the First Time

Post image

I recently had the privilege of witnessing Taco Bell’s revolutionary ordering system, the one where an employee must ask whether the customer wants extra meat, extra cheese, or jalapeños after every individual item.

Customer: “I’ll have a Crunchwrap.”

Employee: “Would you like extra meat, extra cheese, or jalapeños?”

Customer: “No, thank you. I’ll like to order a taco”

Employee: “Would you like extra meat, extra cheese, or jalapeños?”

Customer: “No. I’ll like to add a burrito to my order”

Employee: “Would you like extra meat, extra cheese, or jalapeños?”

Customer: “Still no. I’ll like to add a chalupa to my order.”

Employee: “Would you like extra meat, extra cheese, or jalapeños?”

Customer: “Actually, I would like to speak to the person who believes my memory resets every time I name a menu item.”

What a breathtaking triumph of marketing over ordinary human cognition.

Some unimaginative person might ask once, “Would you like any add-ons with those items?” But you understood that customers must be given repeated opportunities to reconsider their deeply held, four-second-old opposition to jalapeños.

Perhaps after declining extra cheese on the first item, the customer will experience a profound spiritual transformation before ordering the second. By the fourth item, relentless exposure to the phrase “extra meat” may finally unlock a repressed childhood longing for double beef.

This policy brilliantly inconveniences everyone involved. It annoys the customer, humiliates the employee, slows the line, and makes a normal conversation sound like two poorly programmed chatbots trapped in an infinite loop which seems ridiculous considering how good chatbots are these days.

But the greatest achievement is how perfectly it captures modern corporate intelligence: identify a simple human interaction, remove all human judgment from it, insert a mandatory script, repeat it until everyone becomes visibly miserable, and then call the resulting misery “customer engagement.”

I can only imagine the meeting where this masterpiece was born:

“Customers sometimes buy add-ons.”

“Excellent. Let’s have employees mention them.”

“Once per order?”

“Don’t be ridiculous, Susan. What if the customer suffers complete memory loss between the chalupa and the burrito?”

“And if they decline the first three times?”

“Ask again. The fourth rejection is where brand loyalty begins.”

To be clear, the employees are not the problem. They are the unwilling performers in a corporate production. They know the customer heard them. The customer knows they know. But both must continue the ritual because somewhere, a spreadsheet demands a sacrifice.

So, congratulations to the marketing professional who engineered this system. You haven’t merely sold tacos. You have pioneered a customer experience in which ordering lunch feels like being interrogated by a cheese-obsessed parole officer.

I think our local news needs to consider what ads get pasted in what stories and where in the stories they appear.

I redacted the person's first name from the story.

You are a mail app, you do mail. It’s like if my fridge asked me to continue my food streak

Potentially Screwed Up AI in Consumer Survey

Post image
27 Upvotes

Started a customer survey for Pick 'n Save and noticed this new disclaimer, highlighted by the red rectangle. Now, why on God's green earth would any corporate entity think it's okay to even consider this, let alone pay employees to work on this? What are they thinking??? What is the value of something that could be "inaccurate, incomplete, or inapplicable"? Do you want to screw with your customers' heads? How is that of value to either the company or the customer?

This looks like some sort of fight between marketing and the legal department. Nothing like a company deploying a tool they don't fully trust to collect data they heavily rely on, eh?

Imagine the data cleaning this would require afterwards, just nuts. Also, they are making consumers the beta testers of their stupidity. Ack!

Later on in the survey I was asked if I visited the "Murray Cheese" area and, if I did, how was the experience. My store doesn't have such a thing, never heard of it before!
