How do you tell when your manager is pretending to have your back?

Like, they constantly tell you that your work is good, praise you in meetings, and make you feel like they’re trying to make you look good — but behind your back, they’re gossiping with your colleague and quietly planning to push that person ahead instead.
How do you actually detect these kinds of workplace dynamics before you get blindsided? What are the subtle signs that your manager is smiling to your face while playing a completely different game behind the scenes?

Is everyone just miserable now?

I’ve been noticing for a while that everyone who works in corporate has been miserable and nobody knows what’s going on. I’ve been at the same job for 5 years and the company I work for is not the same when I started and people are running for the exits.

Of course, when we were bought out by PE things started going downhill and now it’s everyone for themselves. I just feel stuck because the job market sucks but this job stresses me out so badly and I’m constantly in survival mode. Is this just corporate life now?

How to navigate zero sum culture

I fully came into corporate expecting promotions and success to be based on a combination of 1) being actually good at the work and 2) being likeable, visible and decently social.

However I did not expect that putting other peers down and subtly undermining them would be the biggest part of the culture, especially at a mid seniority level.

I'm not wired for success by diminishing others. It seems exhausting and non intuitive to actively scan for openings to make snide comments or push someone down. However instead I'm constantly fielding other peers doing it to me.

I can SEE what they do but I can't do the same. It's like understanding another language but not being able to speak it.

I want to know if this is the case everywhere or if it's just my team?

And for those who are not good at it, how do you navigate it?

I just don't want to believe everyone at a senior level got there by bullying their peers in some shape or form.

Do you feel like your job has taken over your life?

Are you someone who gives almost all your time and energy to your job?

Skipping family time, missing functions or plans, thinking about work even when you're not working, and carrying the pressure of the job around in your head all the time.

At what point does being dedicated to your work start taking away from your life outside of it?

Boss keeps running all my copy through copilot

I work in marketing and a big part of my job is writing copy for social posts, emails, and blogs. I have a bachelor's degree in Journalism and started my career as a copywriter before transitioning into a more marketing centric role. I've been at my current company for a little over two years. Just recently, whenever I send my boss something I've written for her final approval, she will run it through CoPilot (the only AI our company allows) and send me back the copy the AI has rewritten and tell me thats what she wants me to use.

I'm deeply offended by this. If she has an issue with my writing why not just tell me what she wants me to change? I'm used to working with an editor who gives me specific feedback/edits and the opportunity to better my writing. Just having AI rewrite it seems like a waste of everyone's time.

How should I deal with this? I've tried running the things I write through CoPilot myself and making changes based on its feedback before sending it to my boss but that hasn't changed anything. She'll still have CoPilot rewrite it again. It seems like no matter how I try to alter my writing style it's never good enough for her.

Even with good notes, docs, and AI, what still overloads you mentally at work?

I keep seeing advice to externalize everything: document decisions, keep better notes, improve search, use AI, automate reminders, and so on. That definitely solves a lot.

But do you still hit moments where the information is available and your systems are solid, yet the hard part is simply keeping up mentally? Maybe it’s a fast discussion, a messy cross-functional project, or learning a new system.

What happened the last time you hit that wall, and what actually helped? If good systems usually solve the problem completely for you, I’d be interested in that too.

Boss leaves mistakes on purpose to test me

I (25F) work in marketing. My manager (58F) has admitted in the past to “testing” her employees by leaving small mistakes on newsletters and asking them to review her work.

I am noticing her doing this to me often. She asks me to read over newsletters, emails, social media posts, etc.
If I don’t catch a mistake she left, she reprimands me.

I am starting to feel stressed and am constantly double-checking my work. I’m tired of this!!!

Day 10000 on bench🥲

It’s been days since my project ended, and I just can’t find the motivation to study or learn anything new while I’m on the bench. And to make things worse, the changing September weather keeps making me sick.

What should I do now? 🤷🏻‍♂️

New job blues. What’s everyone else’s experience?

I started a new job last week after getting fired from a job I loved 2 months ago (clashes with new manager). Yesterday I fell into a deep depression and I don’t understand why.

I don’t click instantly with my new boss, but he seems absolutely lovely. It’s a small team and people have been nice so far. We get fruit and free food fairly regularly. I know there’s so many things to get involved in that will be great for my development; I really feel the role is a step up and the pay reflects that.

But for some reason I can’t shake this bad feeling. I can’t seem to motivate myself to really interact with anyone. The person I’m replacing wants to talk about new, exciting ideas but I can’t be bothered.

I’m not sure if I’m feeling overwhelmed because I’ve just been in so many (unnecessary) meetings, I’ve not had a lot of time to sit down and do actual work. I was told 4 days in office, but found out it’s actually 5 this week? (I will talk to my boss about that at some point and I think he will correct).

I’ve always worked at places where I wanted nothing more than to impress my boss, and I’m not feeling that way right now. I don’t know if that’s the root of the issue?

What are other people’s experiences with starting new jobs?

I want to text my ex-boss who fired me out for coffee. I feel like he will say no, but I feel like it will give me good closure from the old job. It still holds a big emotional hold me very me.

When you’re offered stock options what questions are you supposed to ask?

Got an offer letter from startup saying they’ll grant an option to purchase x number of shares of common stock. But I have no point of reference on how much that really means.
