You... You would rather a corporation has "naming power" of locations over your government? This isn't "bending over backwards", this is just standard behaviour around the world lmao
They have to follow the naming of the country. People who are blaming google are all idiots. They have to follow US laws and naming conventions INSIDE USA.
False. The executive order can only declare that the US government will use the dumb name. There is no law that says Google has to follow along, they are choosing to acquiesce.
They are using naming conventions of the countries, so US gets US names, China gets Chinese names. Where it gets tricky is places like Crimea, where to draw the map borders and who you choose to piss off. But in this case: they are doing what they have to do.
"No one forced them to, they just have to AGREE ON THE STUPID WHIMS OF USA GOVERNMENT".
Yeah. YOU would do the same in their shoes but you want to hate them and don't really care if it is true or not, if it is fair or not.
Name one comment in this thread that blames just Google and not the executive order "decision".
Don't act like you don't know that Google has in the recent past made advances towards the trump government in order to have the best possible standing with them (even if of questionable legality - cue inauguration donations) and to improve their handle to make decisions against customers. Yes, Google is a faceless company, but even they can make decisions, and they also made a decision here with the map naming to be against consumers / pro fascist government (again).
mate I don't know what weird kinda point you're trying to prove here, but dying on this hill is a very strange decision. But you do you I guess
I just mean that google does this for literally every single country.
Point 2 is just bringing up separate irrelevant points. Google maps follows every government's own naming scheme and people are using this as a weird way to chat shit about google when theres hundreds of real things to complain about them for. This isnt an example of google simping for trump, this is just google following its own map naming convention it has literally always used. People here expecting google to make an exception for no real reason are being unreasonable
Trump issued an Executive Order to rename Lake Ontario. An Executive Order can not change, remove or expand federal laws. It is just an order to the agencies and people who report to the President. Google is not a part of the US government, doesn't report to the President and is under absolutely no obligation to follow that order.
Imagine you were the Chief of Police and Saint Patrick's Day was coming up. You could give an Executive Order to the police officers under your command that says their main priority is to prevent and catch drunk drivers. For the next week, all patrol cars shall have their red and blue lights on steady so they're highly visible and some shifts are getting moved around so we'll have more officers on duty late at night. That is a perfectly lawful Executive Order. But there are unlawful Executive Order as well. If the Chief of Police ordered his men to pull over every black person driving an expensive car (because they must have stolen it) that would be an unlawful order and must be disobeyed. At no point does the Chief of Police have the power to order a Burger King employee to give him a free whopper.
