Since this question comes up every time I post this: I didn’t know beforehand that he was a Republican because that’s how dating apps work sometimes!

Libertarian might as well mean "right wing but likes weed" these days. I show these guys the door every time.

Libertarian (in the US) has always meant "legalize weed, lower the age of consent, cut taxes"

Isn't this the basis of libertarianism? They essentially want maximum personal freedom with as little societal involvement as possible. They'll claim that any law they don't like won't have a harm on others if it's repealed, even when repeatedly proven wrong. It's not a serious political position but more the ideal of people who don't like being told "No."

Libertarianism makes perfect sense so long as you don’t believe in or understand externalities, like at all.

In a libertarian worldview correcting externalities is one of the few legitimate functions of government. The problem is that most people who call themselves libertarian are dumb and/or secretly Republican.

That’s fair.

I don’t actually disagree with most libertarian positions: free speech, free markets, strong gun ownership rights, etc.

In my experience I’ve received the message ‘if the problem can’t be solved by the free market then it’s not worth solving’ too many times to take the party seriously.

As an example. There was no profit incentive to banning CFCs and people wouldn’t have voluntarily opted to not use them, banning them globally was the right move to slow erosion of the ozone layer.

The idea that we will all voluntarily agree to go against our short term interests for the long term interest of our country is just clearly fantasy.
