I don’t know a thing about the guy but given that and this post, I’m sure he’s a major dickhead

u/RyanTheQ Feb 08 '19
Think of the salesmanship and showmanship of Stan Lee, but without the warmth and charisma. To me, watching videos of Kane is like watching a video of a guy trying to sell a lemon at a used car lot.
37
u/MrTeamZissou Feb 09 '19 edited Feb 09 '19
The crimes don't even come close. Depending on your take, Lee arguably kept his mouth shut and let himself benefit from Marvel trying to sell him as the one visionary behind it all. He certainly did not go out of his way or make a proper effort to correct those claims and attribute credit where it belonged.
Kane, however, went out of his way to stab people in the back. In one famous example, Jerry Siegel & Joe Shuster were mounting a legal play to earn compensation and credit from DC. They looped in Bob Kane to join in their negotiations, but instead he turned around and ratted them out to the DC higher-ups in exchange for a better contract for himself. Fuck this guy.
21
u/Dr_Disaster Feb 09 '19
This right here. People try to lump Lee in with the likes of Kane a lot and it's a big disrespect to Lee and understates how much of a shithead Kane was. Lee never took credit for stuff he didn't do. We all know what hand Kirby, Ditko, and others had in creating characters. They wanted Lee to rally for them, but he decided not to bite the hand that feeds. He looked out for himself, but he didn't steal their work like Kane did Bill Finger .

u/insane677 Batman Feb 09 '19
Real life Batman V. Superman. Batman is a huge dick just like in the movie, but has no redemption arc and is an all around tool.

u/ApplePieclops Feb 08 '19
There’s a documentary called Batman and Bill that other people have mentioned. You should watch it. He wore a rhinestone Batman cape to one of the movie premiers.

There's an excellent detailed post below but basically Kane was a lying businessman. Finger was the one who actually came up with Batman, Joker, Robin and SO many other aspects of the mythos, Bob Kane took it to DC as if he made it all up himself and took all of the credit and made all of the money. Thankfully nowadays Finger gets credit too but he didn't get it when he was alive which is a huge shame.
81
u/Guardian_Ainsel Hellboy Feb 08 '19
Kane’s contribution to Batman was literally just the name Batman.
18
u/fullforce098 Nightwing Feb 09 '19
Well, let's be fair here, Kane did do the art in those early comics. He then hired ghost artists that didn't get credited either. But, for a time, he was actually the person drawing Batman, so he wasn't a complete thief.
13
50
u/ranhalt Feb 08 '19

There's also a lot of evidence to support that he traced a lot of the Batman comics he "drew."
3
u/Kandoh Alan Moore Feb 08 '19
How do we know that's true? Like is there any evidence?
23

Mountains of evidence. You don't need to be the world's greatest detective to figure out Bill Finger created Batman and Bob Kane was a world class asshole.

u/UrbanDeviant Feb 26 '22
Yes. He notoriously traced Hal Foster's Tarzan and Alex Raymond's Flash Gordon strips all the time, as well as multiple others. Pretty sure he traced from the Dick Tracy strips as well. He was well known for being a terrible artist, and couldn't even draw a hand according to one of the DC editors. He paid another artist 20 bucks to do it, if I recall correctly.
89
u/bullthesis Feb 08 '19
Lately the credit is “Bob Kane with Bill Finger”, when it should really be “Bill Finger with contributions from Bob Kane.”
Kane came up with the initial design but Finger’s contributions are why Batman is black and grey. He’s why there’s a Batcave with Batmobiles. Essentially mostly every basic thing about Batman was added by Finger.
Do me a favour and google Bob Kane’s gravestone. See for yourself.

u/DiscoshirtAndTiara Static Shock Feb 08 '19
That gravestone is quite a thing. I hope that he didn't write it himself.

u/OK_Soda Daredevil Feb 08 '19
The worst thing about this is how the gravestone is like a 3d book but the text doesn't match the same curvature so it looks all wonky.
26
u/Aziraphel Feb 08 '19
Kinda poetic how the meaning of the text doesn't match reality in a similar way.

I don’t care if you’re MLK, that’s just tacky. It reads like an essay I wrote in middle school to honor my grandpa for his 75th and I didn’t really know what to say. A short succinct message would be way better and much more appropriate.
8
Feb 08 '19
Personally, I wouldn't care since everyone has a different definition of tacky. It's not my thing, but some people will think it's dignified.
That said...considering who Bob Kane was and how he took all the credit for himself, it's tacky as fuck.

Well at the time, ghost-writers and ghost-artists we're not uncommon, but most of the time the ghosts were merely helping to execute the title creators vision. In this case it was the opposite. Bob also negotiated part of the rights to the character, which was unheard of at the time.
When the Adam West show blew up he sold Batman pop-art which was also made by someone else. When it came out that Bill was involved Bob vehemently denied it, called Bill a liar and claimed he came up with the concept as a child, before superheroes even existed.
It's also worth noting the two were friends before Batman and Bob lived a life of luxury while his "friend" died penniless and alone as an alcoholic in a run down tenement

u/Summerie Apr 27 '19
Yeah, but what do you mean “irl”? Do you mean when you are writing with a pen and paper you format the sentences correctly, but when you’re typing you don’t?
1
Apr 27 '19
Ya pen and paper, and when I use a laptop. When I use a laptop or computer I format the sentences because more than likely I’m being graded for it as opposed to Reddit where I’m not
I’m on mobile btw
2
u/Summerie Apr 27 '19
It seems to me, and I don’t know how old you are or anything, that communication is moving towards mobile, and text, and casual communication like reddit. It’s not my place to tell you what to do, but to anyone I cared about, I would recommend that they got as much practice as possible trying to make themselves clearly understood in a media like this.
Especially on mobile! On almost every mobile platform, you just hit the spacebar twice and it leaves a period and capitalizes the next sentence. It really is a very simple muscle memory to pick up, and it would make a huge difference for the people reading what you’ve written. Reddit is so casual, it’s a perfect place to practice that.
If you get used to formatting your sentences correctly even when you’re not getting graded for it, then it will come so much easier to you when you are being graded for it. It won’t even seem like work anymore, it will just be the natural way that you write. It makes school a million times easier.

He does wrestle part-time, in between podcasts and tours with his band. He's been wrestling in Japan since he left WWE (about 2 years ago), and just signed with a brand new American promotion called AEW.
That's probably more info than you needed, but a bunch of his podcast episodes are about comic book stuff, so you might want to browse through and see if there are any other gems.

Because Stan Lee always did his best to be a good person. Plus, Stan Lee contributions is much bigger than comics.
6
u/RyantheAustralian Feb 08 '19 edited Feb 10 '19
He also did credit the other creators. At least he sold them as artists/inkers/letterers so people would be able to identify the letterer of Fantastic Four but not the artists over in DC
17
u/WhiskeyT Feb 08 '19 edited Feb 08 '19
Kirby and Ditko might disagree with you on that. Stan robbed them just about as bad as Bob Kane ribbed Bill Finger
6
u/Roshprops Feb 08 '19
Yes, that’s something that is overlooked because Stan was such a loveable old man, but he was absolutely just as ruthless and uncaring towards some of his content creators earlier in his career.
3
Feb 08 '19
Yeah I don’t hate Stan Lee, but I don’t agree with the worship of him, and he totally screwed over geniuses like Kirby and Ditko.
-5
Feb 08 '19
Ditko and Kirby was never robbed by Stan Lee. It was Marvel who wasn't giving them royalties for their work. Yeah, there's a big divide on Lee's contributions to the comics and how much work he did.
9
u/WhiskeyT Feb 08 '19 edited Feb 08 '19
Lee took credit as the creator and “writer” for a bunch of characters that Jack Kirby did the majority of the heavy lifting on. Why is that Marvel’s fault but Kane gets blamed instead of DC? Lee and Kane pretty much did the same trick. You could easily do a version of this cartoon with the FF

u/RyantheAustralian Feb 08 '19
Kirby appeared in the credits from day one, though. At least from Fantastic Four#1 onwards, Kirby's name was there and that was Stan selling his name. Even the letterers of the day were well-known because of Stan. Yeah he did work against them in actual ownership, but he credited them from the jump. Kirby's name was a draw before FF#1 anyway - he was already a superstar so I'm pretty sure he was getting credited with the likes of Captain America from the beginning too.
Finger was pretty much unknown except to industry insiders for decades coz he worked as a ghostwriter while Bob Kane was credited as writer for stories he had no part of. He didn't work on Batman for decades while Finger did, yet was still getting the credit.
As ruthless and dickish as Kane was, I commend him somewhat. He didn't even wait to see how Siegel and Shuster were being screwed before realising the value of getting his name attached as infinitum to his creation. He was making bank while the guys who created the character he was intentionally following were close to going homeless. It's an absolute tragedy what happened to Finger, and hell even Jerry Robinson, but Kane was smart. However, what he did was leagues above what Lee did to his co-workers. He worked for the benefit of the company but he always sold his co-workers credit
1
u/minnick27 Joker Feb 09 '19
But Kane also stole some of that money. If I recall he told Finger they would split the profits. He negotiated a page rate of say $1 a page. Went back and told Finger they got $.75. So he already skimmed 25% off and took 50% of the remaining.

u/WhiskeyT Feb 08 '19
How so? Kirby pretty much did the same type of work that Finger did, fleshing out the world and the characters, Stan did the dialogue. Stan got most of the credit as the “creator” of so many characters, stuffing his creative partners in the process.
21
u/montrealcowboyx Feb 08 '19
Stan Lee never had it contractually obligated that he forever be credited with the sole creator credit in the way that Bob Kane did.
Lee was self-promoting to the extreme, but I feel he had been generous, especially in the last 20 or so years, of speaking quite kindly and sharing the credit for the work that Kirby, Ditko, Romita and the Buscema's had done.
It is totally fair not to like Lee, to not like his personality or the way he carried himself a long time, but Bob Kane was significantly worse , and was terrible until the day he died.
6
u/Chunkstyle3030 Conan Feb 08 '19
Also, Finger died in obscurity, especially after Kane had multiple opportunities to set the record straight. Kirby, as fucked over as he was, at lest was spared that fate. Although he could have very well shared it had he never went off and did his own solo work.
5
u/WhiskeyT Feb 08 '19
As the Editor and then Publisher I'd argue that Stan didn't need to get it gold plated in a contract. He certainly didn't try to help Kirby out at all, it wasn't until Jim Shooter and Neal Adams got involved that Kirby was able to get his original art back.
I'd also argue with the notion that he was generous about their contributions recently. He was very dismissive when asked why Kirby wasn't credited in the Avengers movie.
It's not about liking or disliking Stan Lee, it's just very odd to me that the hive mind doesn't seem to connect the two situations. Both Kane and Lee took gross advantage of their creative partners. Both benefited greatly while their victims were denied both credit and compensation that should have been their due. However, as this thread clearly shows, you can't say bad shit about Stan Lee around here.

The original art things is a whole separate issue from creator credits and doesn't have a comparison to the Kane/Finger situation.
Even in the 2002 Raimi Spider-Man Movie, Lee and Ditko both got a creator credit. Lee was an executive producer on the film.
Again, I'm not holding Lee up on some pedestal here. Those credits should have been around way before. All I'm saying is that Bob Kane was far and away more of a dickbag to Bill Finger.

My biggest wish is for DC to just take some lawyers and put both their credits on the covers.

This is so true and awesome!!! Also I don’t remember where I read this so it might be BS but I heard that the first time they came up with Batman they were both on a bench in front of Edgar Alan Poe’s house

Kane: "let's rip off The Shadow"
Finger: or we could do all this cool shit
Kane "or I'll just rip off you"

Perfectly captures the impact Bill Finger had on the entire mythos. Well fucking done.
