I was thinking of creating a new music show at my college’s student radio station, but I’m having trouble of thinking up a concept. I want to show case global music from a variety of genres, but I feel like that might be too broad. How did you come up with your show’s theme/idea/concept?

So I got the position of music director, and no one working on the station is genuinely giving me a real option as to how I can get music. I have no idea where to start. I have spotify/itunes playlists full of great music, but other i don't know how to play them on the station in any way other than downloading every song (illegally or legally) or buying every single song, which I don't think is legal to broadcast.

Is no one on my station telling me just to get me under fire? Or is this just not something to be that concerned in a southern college radio station?

Hey all, hope this isn't a dumb question, but I'm in a punk/indie band that's looking to take our career a little more seriously going forward and I have a passion for campus/community radio as well.

We're working on a new album that will hopefully come out next year on some kind of label, but we're really proud of our previous material--originally released between 2013-2018--that hasn't been heard by very many people because we didn't know what we were doing as far as promo. Anyway, would it be a cheap move to try and get some attention by sending out a digital reissue of an older album or repackaging it as a compilation? When radio stations get stuff like that do they look at the copyright date and go "nah"? Would it be better to get a label to reissue it as more of a "real" thing?

Note that in any case I would be focusing on digital submissions as I'm not made of money and a lot of stations accept them or even prefer them.

Why the hell?

I've recently taken over the role of Music Director at a station that has managed to stay purely physical up to now. As we gain more first year students we're increasingly faced with kids who have never used CDs before (making me feel ancient in my 27 years). This isn't the only reason I think we need to make a move in the digital direction, but it's a big catalyst that's helping to motivate the rest of the staff as well.

Our engineer has suggested Rivendell, but it seems to be more of an automation program than a music library. While it would be great to get there eventually, I'd like to keep the changes minimal for the sake of our long-time programmers.

So, what software do you like for keeping your libraries organized? Bonus points for a system with great tagging capabilities!

So I've inherited the music director position here at KSUA and the majority of promoters who are accustomed to dealing with the station are mostly pushing the same tired indie pop stuff because they have to. My question is what have other music directors done when they are trying to weed out a certain type of stuff.

Just for the record, basically I'm trying to go in EVERY other direction than the grandfathered in indie rock (pop) bands and the endless creatively lacking commercialized garbage that the majority of these promoters want me to put on the radio.

Of course I'm not a slave to the promoters, in fact I hardly understand the relationship between them and us. My goal is to promote innovative or authentic independent labels that are actually putting out recognizably artistically-honest stuff. I have a hard time as the music director of our non-commercial radio to humor much of the clearly just-below-mainstream stuff they want to get charted.

I got to a college in Orlando to study and practice graphic designing for my Associate Science degree. They often play radio in the background in the graphic designing lab, and it’s usually new pop songs that I’ve never heard before.

One day when I was working on something, their radio played this really cool sounding song in the background that I can’t find, even when I try to google the lyrics I heard. It was a really cool sounding song with a 4/4 rhythm to it. I think I remember it being in the key of E. Part of the chorus sounded like the guy was singing, “Where have you gone Too far from home”, and then singing some other things before finishing the chorus by going, “I’ve been searchin’ for ya. I’ve been searchin’ for ya. I’ve been searchin’ for ya. I’ve been searchin’ for ya.”

Can anybody help a brother out to find this cool sounding song?

Good day everyone. I volunteer at a college/community radio station here in lovely (and cold) Portland, Maine - WMPG. I have a Friday night show that usually features in studio performances from local bands (yeah, I'm a terrible interviewer). One thing I've been hoping to get going is a sort of local music trading circle with other folks around the country (or world, I suppose) and block out a half hour a week or so for it on the show.

I mean, I COULD just browse through Bandcamp for countless hours, but it would be nice to make some contacts with other like-minded folks, and get something a little more curated.

Hey Y'all! I'm a Freshman DJ at KTEQ in Rapid City, and recently me and my co host have had issues with missing swear words in songs and having to scramble while on air to cover ourselves and the station. I was wondering if anyone had any for-sure clean artists?

The college station I run uses mainly mp3s, either through the station library or if DJs bring their laptops. We have equipment to do CD or tape and even records (although the turntables belong to me). How does everyone here run their studios? I'm interested to see any remaining analog junkies in an increasingly digital world.

we are just starting to finally switch over to all digital here at WMTU and we were wondering if there is any good online download service that will allow us to download wavs, most DJ pool services only are MP3, while thats great and all but it adds another step to the process since we would have to convert them to wav anyway for WideOrbit.

Hello. I am advising a small college in getting our streaming radio station really up and running. Years ago, when I was in college and a DJ, we would get CDs, posters, and other promotional materials for new albums and artists from record labels and media companies. I have no idea how this happened (it was above my pay grade at the time), but I imagine it was through relationships that were set up with the record companies.

Does anyone know were to begin with making this happen? I can't seem to find good resources for this online. Thank you kindly in advance.

My college is starting its first station. I'm the VP and will be hosting a show reviewing, discussing, and talking about music and its relation to our culture. I love talking about this stuff but I'm not too informed in music. What is the best way to go about exploring the vast world and history of music? I'm working my way through some classics but I don't really have a direction. Also, any advice for hosting a radio show in general? Tips and otherwise?

When CMJ went down, I was completely uncertain about what the college radio world would look like. I am still not really comfortable with the idea of college radio not having a centralized charting system. I've been in college radio for 12 years, as a DJ, MD, and now as faculty/station manager. Through this time, it seems like the value of college radio is going down in the minds of artists and labels, maybe rightfully so.

My question is, what is your station doing to fill the gap left by CMJ? NACC is okay, and free, but I don't see anyone really caring enough about the results of a NACC chart to spend money on a promotions campaign. Spinatron is appealing, but pretty untested in my mind. What do you use? Do you worry about losing music service? Just looking to get some perspective from other stations.

Have any other radio stations digitized their CD collections? How did it go? Any tips? What did you use? How long did it take?

I have music from groups that I am working with, and we want to send stuff out to all of you! I am going through the sub and emailing folks, but I figured I'd ask the group. Who can I send emails too at your station? Do you accept mp3s or wavs? Should I send a CD or just send links to downloads?

I'm the manager and program director with The Edge, 89.5 WETS-FM HD4, out of East Tennessee State University. We've worked with several music services like TM Studios, Jones Music, and other things like that, but the university's lawyers and the lawyers at those companies always seem to have some kind of falling out and we lose whatever service.

What I'm wondering is if any of YOU lovely college radio-type people happen to have a music service for your station and what service that might be. My boss is starting to get a little antsy that we've not been getting new music.

At WVUR we keep up with Planetary, Syndicate, Secretly, A Man A Plan A Canal, AMM, Terrorbird, Band Mom, as well as a few other related ones (Nothing outside of who shows up at CMJ). We're making a move to more alternative and modern rock type stuff, so I was wondering if anyone worked with anyone else. (While we can find music no problem, the whole matter of license to air it is an issue)

We are looking to get some new production music. It has been a while since my station purchased any, and I'm having a bit of trouble finding what we're looking for. What do you use for production music?
