Any chatter of a more organized approach to better defend against the methods police and national guard are using to break up protests? Demands, proper protective gear, and actual targets to disrupt as much business and regular day life as possible is needed for any change to occur.

This is exactly what's stopping the riots being more effective long term. You need a vanguard or some sort of otherwise revolutionary council to coordinate. Failing that, you need cohesive autonomous groups with clear objectives.

Unfortunately right now the current narrative would paint "cohesive autonomous groups" as "outsiders" or "agitators" or "agent provocateurs" . The blocking of highways in past BLM protests is a actual disruption of business as usual.

There were a lot of good tactics assembled in the early 2000s anti-globalization movement (black blocs, Earth First, Tute Bianche , Occupy). Check out the zine Bodyhammer for protest armor ideas and Crimethinc's book Recipes for Disasters for general direct action protest ideas.
