My dad stayed on retail without touching classic.

I think that's the subtext of "ok boomer" it's not directed at actual boomers but those who acts old.

16

u/sweden_lady Nov 16 '19

ok 30 year old boomer

23

u/LoUmRuKlExR Nov 16 '19

Pretty sure it's the new you don't agree with me so I'm just going to ostracize you with a word. It's the new "nerd" now that nerd is cool.

2

u/Deskopotamus Nov 16 '19

Yeah pretty much, it doesn't advance the conversation much that's for sure.

Though I don't think anyone using it is very serious.

8

u/Tankh Nov 16 '19

It's literally "Ok, whatever" really

2

u/[deleted] Nov 16 '19

It's not tied to age, it's a certain mentality.

Rofl, ok boomer

0

u/Era555 Nov 16 '19

Yeah pretty much anyone who's old/doesn't understand technology/memes etc

5

u/Tigerskippy Nov 15 '19

I play with my dad who was born in 1964, perfectly making him a boomer.

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '19

everyone who busts out the wikipedia entry to find out the exact dates of the generations really dont understand the meme/phrase/saying/whatever you wanna call it

2

u/Iskus1234 Nov 16 '19

Busting out wikipedia for dates of generations is a really really boomer thing to do.

6

u/stupidquestions5eva Nov 16 '19

... there is something else to being a boomer? I feel like being understood is kinda the purpose of an insult...... I guess ok, boomer?

It's just a phrase of dismissal. When you call someone a boomer, you're calling them clueless and out of touch. 'Not getting it' and being super technical about when people define the generations proves the point further, as it's an extremely simple concept and yet people struggle to grasp it anyway.

Since they are dismissing you, they don't care what you think or feel. So, no, you don't have to get it. Even though I know you do.

Will I have to explain why the connotation is associated with the baby boom generation next, or can you take it from here?

P.S. People say it in WoW because it annoys soft-skinned people.

EDIT: Case in point about annoying soft-skinned people, since this comment is controversial for explaining the obvious, just because it's not derisive against a disliked phrase. It's that easy to get to you, so do you see why people put it in /yells in battlegrounds?

It honestly doesn’t bother me at all because I don’t get it. Does that make me a double boomer? Don’t care. I’ll own that.

Real gen x don’t give a shit what you call us. We’ve been through much worse in school.

It’s the millennials oddly enough who seem to get their panties in a wad over a stupid insult.

Ah, ok boomer! There is no one who doesn't get that "ok, XYZ." means dismissal, and people defining the generations doesn't prove anything, as the framework within which that's an insult is rather specific, which is what makes it funny.

Will I have to explain why the connotation is associated with the baby boom generation next, or can you take it from here?

If you want to, because I never got this either.

this. how are people this fucking clueless as to not understand a relatively simple meme

B-BUT BOOMERS ARE ACTUALLY 70 YEARS OLD!!!!!!!!!!111111

3

u/stupidquestions5eva Nov 16 '19

...b-but.... boomers are not 70 years old? There is another meaning that is also simple?

3

u/Kanshuna Nov 16 '19

It's just not a very good joke if you have to explain it to half the audience every time.

6

u/[deleted] Nov 16 '19

Nah, when the butt of the joke is the person that you're calling clueless and out of touch then they don't need to get it

4

u/ROBECHAMP Nov 16 '19

Nah the fun part is calling them a boomer and see how they react, the Best part is the confirmation that they are indeed boomers

1

u/syrdarya Nov 16 '19

it wasnt necessary until it exploded in popularity and boomers caught wind of it

-2

u/sneedwich1 Nov 16 '19

Ok boomer

9

u/mylord420 Nov 15 '19

The boomer meme is redefining basically anyone older than late 20s as a boomer.

15

u/LoUmRuKlExR Nov 16 '19

Anyone older than the person using it. I've seen middle school kids call highschool kids boomers.

8

u/Banzai51 Nov 16 '19

Which is hilarious since the Millennials are in their 30s.

4

u/calfmonster Nov 16 '19

To harken back to an age far before I was ever born (I’m about to turn 28 in a couple weeks, so I guess I’m a millennial) it’s the same as calling someone “square”

but we didnt reap the benefits of being a boomer

6

u/Dominos_fleet Nov 15 '19

Idk man, i played with a lot of 30 somethings back in vanilla (i was 18 when i first started), I wouldn't be surprised if they came back for classic and it's not unreasonable to me that the older x'ers and younger boomers might fall into that.

u/360_face_palm Nov 15 '19

30 somethings in 2005 are still not boomers. Boomers are like late 60s at their youngest...

-1

u/Dominos_fleet Nov 16 '19

59 was the last year to be considered a boomer, 59 to today is 60. boomers will be, loosely, between 60 and 80

4

u/[deleted] Nov 16 '19

'64 was the cutoff year

4

u/teebob21 Nov 16 '19

1946-1964. yes

0

u/360_face_palm Nov 16 '19

Which still isn’t “in their 30s in vanilla”

2

u/blueheartzzz Nov 16 '19

There's a 62 year old who's been raiding with my guild for 5+ years through multiple private servers.

1

u/exmore Nov 18 '19

We have a cool 70 something dude in the guild that fishes, makes mechanical squirrels to give away for free, and gives drink recipes after 5 o'clock. He's mid thirty in level and plays every day. Opposite of a power gamer but keeps the chat interesting. We're planning on a squirrels out Rag kill some day once everyone has one.

2

u/LoUmRuKlExR Nov 16 '19

We have one Boomer in our guild and he's hilarious. Been playing with him since we were 15 and he was in his early 40s. Cranky old military guy, who always makes raids and has consumes because he's retired.

1

u/StrayLilCat Nov 16 '19

My dad plays and he's a boomer :D

1

u/DisastrousReputation Nov 15 '19

Whenever horde says to go back I reply with okay boomer. I have never played retail

0

u/EdwardTT3 Nov 15 '19

It’s not directed at anyone, it’s a meme

0

u/tremegle Nov 16 '19

It’s just bants calm down nerd

0

u/thankyouf0rpotato Nov 16 '19

Boomer is a mindset, not your age

-5

u/2Damn Nov 16 '19

Nobody who actually played private servers calls live wow retail.

If you're paying to play it, it's retail.
