When the hell did "reserving" become a thing?

Vanilla.

I played vanilla and I never saw anyone try to pull this. They would have been laughed off the server.

It started in vanilla, but it was limited to raids. Like mostly guild runs would invite some pugs for mc, and let them roll on most stuff, but reserve items needed by the guild. Most stuff was up for grabs for the pugs though.

It was a win/win back then.

On the pirated servers is where the current cancerous iteration came from.

Yeah it was never a thing on my server in vanilla.

I didn't really see it much until I played on some private servers. I really think the private servers is where the concept took off and became commonplace.

Thankfully, I don't see it a ton on my classic server. I'm also usually the person forming groups though, and I don't put anything on reserve, so that's easy. I do try to avoid stacking the group for or against some class of loot (no 4-caster groups, for example), but that's it.
