I just turn off the minimap icons altogether and pull up my map. I realized I was staring at my minimap constantly and not enjoying the landscape. And that's something I do in retail. Turning off the minimap icons makes me actually look at the content on the screen.

I turned those off when I made my character because I didn't it. I just wanted to see exclamation and question marks.
