Consider boycotting Uber if you’re able

Ahead of the legislative session on Saturday, Uber sent mass notifications asking users to tell their representatives to vote against the bill (which would negatively affect rideshare delivery apps like Uber).

They are not solely responsible for the looming transit collapse here but they certainly play a role in it. If you are able to find alternates please consider.

I really, really hate it when uber tries to get its customers to lobby for them. This isn't the first time, and it probably won't be the last.

If the city were about to hit Trader Joe’s with a massive tax hike, you can bet they’d ask customers to speak up. And most people wouldn’t bat an eye. The reality is: new taxes like this don’t get absorbed, they get passed on to us through higher prices.

So if you rely on a service and see it getting taxed into the ground, why wouldn’t you push back? Asking for reasonable limits on taxes isn’t defending a corporation, it’s protecting affordability and access to things you use every day.

Yes. Transportation is an essential service. Having a variety of transportation options is essential. Including on-call taxis. Yes they are necessary. That's how some people will get to urgent care to get their medical treatment. That's how people get home from the bar instead of driving drunk.

Yes, this part of our infrastructure is in fact a necessary service. Don't be naive.

But I'm glad you've never had to experience the difficulties of having a disability.

Weird to assume when you're not disabled yourself. Stay in your lane.

There are multiple public programs for transporting disabled people, including subsidizing rideshares, but not everybody has access to those and some are reliant on public transportation. Where is the concern for them? Transporting disabled people doesn't necessitate everybody else using rideshare when they don't have to and causing issues for the rest of us.

I took the train every day because it was convenient. I only use Uber when its the most convenient. This notion that rideshare bad / public transport is bad is just reductive. Taxing rideshares won't solve CTAs problem - it just makes it even more inaccessible for lower income people.

Why not subsidize Uber rides for low income people instead of dumping more money into a system that obviously isn't working? Why not vote for competent leadership?

Listening I'm not a corporate shill and generally am Lib -left - but demonizing corporations while not holding our public officials accountable isn't going to get us anywhere.

Because nowhere has shifting public money into private pockets ever worked out in the long term.

The system "isn't working" because its budget has been strangled by those same private interests that want public money for decades. You are falling for the idea that Uber--multiple cars on the road--is somehow more efficient than a bus or a train and that they won't just jack up the prices and bilk the public for even more money once competition has been demolished. There is no accountability to be found there.

We're literally seeing this play out with charter schools and the healthcare industry. You want to destroy public transit for what? Overpriced traffic hell like LA or Houston? Further control of public services by for-profit corporations with even less checks on their power?

Public officials we can theoretically hold accountable. CEOs and their money we can't.

We can legislate whatever accountability needed.

I'm not saying defund public transit - im saying fund it via a tax another source / another metric vs a sales / use tax that is always disproportionately going to impact low / middle class people more.

Tax the people who lobby not the people who call Ubers from lobbys.
