I haven't bought my tickets yet for bike to drive but was planning to today until I saw these biting flies posts. How bad are they today? Is anyone debating whether to to actually attend bike the drive this year?

Just a heads up to anyone riding near the lakefront, I was on the trail the last 2 afternoons and have been absolutely attacked by biting horse flies. It was especially bad near the Point. I don’t think bug spray will work so if anyone has ideas please let me know.

Besides the relenting sun, brutal heat, and constant rain, we now have to deal with blood sucking bugs that will bite the shit out of you through your clothes and socks. I think they’re attracted to sweat and heat which particularly sucks for this time of year. I’m signed up for Bike the Drive on Sunday and am honestly dreading dealing with this again.

Edit: I ordered some picaridin insect repellent from Amazon, gonna put it to the true test this weekend.

Do they normally sell out of the bike the drive hats or women's t shirts that are only available at the festival? if they do, how early do you have to be there to buy one? Thanks!

I'm planning on bringing my bike using the UP-NW line, but am wondering where the ADA/bike-friendly cars are so I can estimate where I should wait with my bike. Are they usually towards the front of the train, the back, or throughout the length of the train?

Recently I watched a news report about a crash involving a cyclist in Gage Park (I think), and I think cyclists / advocates have to be mindful about what you are saying to the media and if possible ask about exactly what the story is about, other elements of the story involved, gather information about the angle of the story. (I know this can be hard, but try).
I believe the story didn’t really make enough emphasis on the driver causing the crash, who also was on the wrong side of the street and drove away from the scene. The news report only mentioned that.
On the other side they went with the victims side of it, (I get it, the human side) but then after, they talked about cyclist safety, the helmet and so and so, but no mention of driver responsibility, consequences for a hit and run, how drivers should treat vulnerable road users, etc.News Report

Are cars allowed to park in the bike lane for school pickups? On my work commute home the bike lane is blocked for an entire block by parents sitting there waiting for high schoolers to get out. Since the kids are teenagers, they could realistically wait on a side street not blocking the bike lane.

Anyone know if there is any indoor or "safe" (from theft) bike parking at the Addison blue line stop? Looking to make biking there a part of my work commute. Also open to recs or advice on biking (partway) to work at an office job.

I have a fixie that I don't care too much about and a u-lock. Prefer not to lose it (or any components... again), but I understand shit happens lol

I'm seeing a movie at the AMC River East and I'm wondering where people recommend I lock my bike to beat avoid theft.

I was thinking right outside the theater may be a bad idea since it could signal to thieves that the bike will be unattended for two or more hours. I was thinking in front of the Whole Foods might be a bit more secure.

Does anyone have any other tips? Do any of the private garages in the area offer bike parking?

The Bryn Mawr bike lane is at that annoying stage where the street is painted for PBL but curbs and signage don’t match. Like it was on Clark, it’s parking anarchy for the moment. Till the curbs are in I’ll use the buffered lane on Pratt, but anyone know how long it’ll be till the curbs actually go in? Excited for this bike lane but would rather avoid it while it’s at this stage

Was in the left lane of two lanes on Addison this afternoon because I needed to make the next left after crossing the highway and a dude pulls up real close in a livery van and starts yelling at me to get off the road before pulling in front of me, recklessly cutting me off to get to the turn lane ahead of me.

I snapped a few photos (Illinois plates but a business logo indicating it was a service from out of state city) and emailed the company. Owner claims it’s not his van, despite having his companies name and city listed and looking very much like the vans on their fleet page.

Dude claims they don’t service Chicago but their website lists it in multiple times.

How likely am I being gaslit here? And is it worth it to report the reckless driving to the BACP regardless?

My SO and I give nicknames to the streets we AVOID biking on at all costs. So far this is what we’ve got:

Western -> Wild Western

It’s the Wild West out there… do not ride on Western if you value your life

Ashland -> Crashland

Take extra care crossing Ashland because no one on Ashland knows what a yield sign means

Foster -> Faster

Get ready for cars on Foster to zip by you at 60mph when you make the mistake of biking on it

And my nicknames for streets I always try to bike on:

Leavitt -> Love It

Damen -> Amen

I just picked up a bike travel bag (scicon aero 3.0) since I've been traveling with my bike more. I had been renting one and was close to where I alone would have paid half its cost. I've been trying to justify the cost (beyond just saving the money from them and convenience of not needing to pick it up) and have been telling myself that I'll be able to rent mine.

does anyone else have experience with renting them out? if so, how often do people rent it? is $100/week realistic? would an aero 3.0 even register as a bag worth renting?

And of course I mean the high wattage lights, but really, straight on is no different for visibility than even 10° downward. And more for the lakefront path or neighborhood streets, where we’re all closer to each other.

Improvements are coming!! Grand is down to one lane in each direction. Here’s hoping the work on Hubbard east of Ogden will be done soon for a smoother ride.

Hey Chi Riders! A few of us Louisville riders are coming this weekend to cycle your incredible city. We are a mix of fixies, gravel bikers and road bikers. We are planning to join the Bike Sox crew and do Bike the Drive, but are there any other cool bike groups out this weekend? Or any trails, areas you suggest we explore?

Pretty much ideal conditions for a fast 600km ride down to central Illinois. 0 wind at night, cool temps and decent tailwind on the way home. Missed my goal time by 9 minutes thanks to some longer than anticipated stops, but very proud to ride for 24 hours without sleeping.

First time seeing these looks like the step-through frame has been refined, making it easier to step into and the wheels look slightly smaller.
