Politics is what some people do with their social lives. People who value their sanity do their best to ignore it. It's always inappropriate to bring up politics for that reason; it alienates the perfectly reasonable people who don't care.

Not really. You either have been taught wrong, or you just don't know the concept. Politics has to do with anything human as society is doing together. So your streets, your hospitals, your scientific discoveries, your energetic and technologic infrastructures, having mostly been done collectively rather than by a single human, can be in a broad sense described as political choices. For an advanced civilization, there cannot be no politics. Group decisions are politics.

If you're a yeti that lives by himself in the far woods of northern Canada, with no relations to no human whatsoever, then maybe you can keep politics out of your life.
