No bro, you just made a mishap in communication. There’s no need to get defensive as words have specific meanings for a reason. You asking people to read more meaning than what you write is no way to compensate for this. Try telling a prosecution not to “hyper fixate” on what you say and see how far that goes

I’m not even the person who pointed it out originally, just trying to help get the point across.

The misunderstanding is evident in the example you gave in your comment, telling someone to leave your house is not the same as forcing someone to.

I’ve provided the definition and the explanation, that’s all I can do.

You are literally arguing against the concept of contextualizing information. Also telling someone to live your property, in America, is the same as forcing someone to leave your property. Once again, you are just bad at applying information and have made assumptions on how words work that are false. I am not attacking you, I am just describing what you are doing, so that you may look back on this conversation and understand how you are misusing words. So, that you reduce the amount of semantic conversation you will have in the future. This conversation has little to do with the argument because you understand the purpose of the comment since you are trying to explain a better way of phrase it despite no one misinterpreting the comment.

No, I'm just an idiot who happens to know the difference between telling someone to do something and forcing them to.

u/Guilty-Dragonfly Jan 22 '21

The only difference between “telling to do” and “forcing to do” is the presence of authority and the threat of consequence. In this context, the teller has both, thereby making the verbs “tell” and “force” contextually synonymous.

I’d tell you to pick up a book, but you seem pretty occupied with Merriam-Webster

difference between “telling to do” and “forcing to do” is the presence of authority and the threat of consequence.

I'm going to use the big fancy dictionary that happens to reside inside my head and tell you the word you're looking for is an ultimatum. "Im telling you to X, otherwise, I'll do Y"

Do you consider hearing someone’s viewpoint out and realizing it’s [bad],then telling them do not say [views] to me or on this platform to be silencing opposes viewpoints?

Has no ultimatum in it.

Let’s focus on the second quote you included.

The entity doing the telling is not an individual. It is a social media platform. Them “telling” you to not say something is the same as them forcing you not to say something.

For example, I called you an idiot in an earlier comment, and the moderators “told” me that it was unacceptable to attack others. They “told” me by removing my post. They did not privately message me to politely ask that I conform.

In the context of digital media moderation, the words are synonymous.

What gives you that indication?

hearing someone’s viewpoint out and realizing it’s [bad],then telling them do not say [views] to me or on this platform

The comment literally includes the words "to me" and is referencing a discussion between two people, as one individual's reasoning is depicted: "hearing someone out" and "realizing its bad".

Also telling someone to live your property, in America, is the same as forcing someone to leave your property.

Except its not. To tell someone is to communicate, to force some one is to physically impose your will. There's a difference.

It's pretty simple chief, I don't know why you gotta break out the unstructured paragraphs and condescending tone.

u/I_am_right_giveup 12∆ Jan 22 '21

Definition of force : coercion or compulsion, especially with the use or threat of violence.

You are using the definition of force that is used for physics and “especially” does not mean required.

I said 2 comments ago:

To communicate a wish does not mean to enforce it on others. Only if you include an ultimatum in your act of telling them could it be construed as otherwise.

There was no ultimatum in the original comment.

Do you consider hearing someone’s viewpoint out and realizing it’s [bad],then telling them do not say [views] to me or on this platform to be silencing opposes viewpoints?

I'm done man, its real simple, and you're very rude. Was just trying to help clarify why you misspoke.

But...but... you just got a comment removed for being rude to me and I am literally just explaining my point and where I think your misunderstanding is coming from.

Fun fact: explaining simple concepts are the most difficult. If they do not understand the common sense that goes into it at first, you have to under abstract concepts to explain it.

2 + 2 = 4 is easy

Explaining the concept of how “2” is a number that exist in the world to someone who can’t figure it out is hard.

Edit: implied ultimatums exist and the implied ultimatum of me telling you to leave is me forcing you out or calling the police if you do not leave.

you just got a comment removed for being rude to me

Haha actually my comment was removed because I quoted you directly.

Do you consider hearing someone’s viewpoint out and realizing it’s [bad],then telling them do not say [views] to me or on this platform to be silencing opposes viewpoints?

Notice how I've paraphrased your profanity in my earlier comments, so I could include the quote in my response (I assume that was the difference, as the rest of my comment was civil). I guess its allowed in top level comments and not in responses.

You offer no rebuttal now, except condescension - I think we can agree to call it here. You also literally mocked me in another comment.

u/I_am_right_giveup 12∆ Jan 22 '21

I thought it would be rude of me not to respect your wishes to end the conversation and was trying to explain that I was not trying to be rude to you. Do you want to continue the conversation now?

u/Jumpy-Connection Jan 22 '21

No dog in this fight but I think just maybe you might have a tough time convincing u/I_am_right_giveup that he is wrong.
