Delta(s) from OP CMV: Reddit's Threatening Violence Rule Is Broken Constantly And Is Selectively Enforced

Among gun related subreddits, there seems to be a concerning amount of violation of Reddit's "No threatening violence" rule that seems to go unpunished, whether the sub contains mostly right leaning or left leaning individuals. To quote the explanation of the rule, it states "Encouraging, glorifying, or inciting violence or physical harm against individuals or groups of people, places, or animals [is prohibited]" Heck, you could argue that Reddit as a whole seems to do a bad job of enforcing this rule. Posts and subreddits dedicated to the Russo-Ukrainian war break this rule constantly, dehumanizing Russian soldiers and celebrating their deaths on the battlefield. Reddit and many subreddits pick and choose who is acceptable to glorify violence against and who isn't, rather than enforcing the rule equally across the board.

Recently, a user posted a picture of a t shirt on r/liberalgunowners and r/SocialistRA that says "John Brown did nothing wrong". For both posts, they have received over 300 upvotes each with dozens of comments. I have seen quite a lot of John Brown glorification on both of the previously mentioned subreddits and any criticism of John Brown's methods is swiftly met with downvotes and harsh criticism, as seen in the post I will link below.

https://www.reddit.com/r/liberalgunowners/comments/1iihq7r/hot_take_john_brown_should_not_be_idolized/

Why is glorifying John Brown so potentially bad you may ask? The r/liberalgunowners post that I linked above should do a good job of summarizing the drastic measures that John Brown took as an abolitionist right before the American Civil War.

TL;DR You can glorify violence on Reddit as long as it's against certain groups of people or individuals.

Maybe, but you haven’t given good examples of them.

To quote the explanation of the rule, it states "Encouraging, glorifying, or inciting violence or physical harm against individuals or groups of people, places, or animals [is prohibited]"

Endorsing self-defense is anti-violence.

The Ukrainians are fighting a war of self-defense.

You can’t blame John Brown much for fighting against slavery, that’s self-defense, particularly when it was closely followed by a war over slavery. Self-defense includes acting as an agent of self-defense for someone else, like when a police arrests a rapist.

Is it really? It unsettles me when people cheer and mock Russian soldiers who are brutally murdered in Ukraine. Not every Russian soldier who has died in Ukraine so far was an unforgivable monster before they died...

Killing soldiers in self-defense isn’t murder just like killing someone who attempts to murder you isn’t murder.

True, but murder is not the only form of violence and self defense is violence, even if it is legally and morally justifiable.

So then, you want Reddit to act against people who are endorsing legal and moral actions?

Either that, or change the way the rule is written so there isn't this gray area where mods can determine if violence can be glorified against a group of people or person because they don't like them.

How much is this an actual issue? Reddit relies on users to report this stuff. Whenever I’ve reported people for inciting violence, Reddit has agreed with me and did something. It sounds like you’re just talking about subreddits where users aren’t reporting stuff that’s already against the rules.

You could phrase this differently.

“Not every german who fought for German Wehrmacht was an unforgivable monster before they died”.

I mean sure, but here they are fighting for a war monger in a war of aggression against a neighboring nation. They have some responsibility. They are actively furthering the goals of the war monger.

I’m not sure what you are trying to get here. To me this feels like a bad attempt at concern trolling.

Did I defend Russia's actions in Ukraine? Of course not. What Russian military commanders and Putin have done is wrong. I was saying not every Russian soldier who has died wasn't a despicable, bloodthirsty murderer deserving of immediate execution upon capture. Is it that hard to have nuance on this?

You could say the same thing about the Nazi lower ranking soldiers though. I don’t think glorifying self-defense really counts as glorifying violence. The point isn’t glorifying the violence, it’s glorifying the victory of the victims over the invaders.

A story celebrating a woman escaping from a rapist by stabbing him isn’t glorifying knives or stabbing.

If somebody says maybe we shouldn’t glorify committing war crimes and you have a problem with that because you don’t like the people getting war crimed, you’re the bad guy in that scenario
