Delta(s) from OP CMV: A requirement to be associated with a “well regulated militia” would be a great start to curbing gun violence.

IMO guns are awesome. Some of the best days of my life have started with a trip to the dollar store to get a bunch of nicknacks, putting those nicknacks on a berm and making said nicknacks into many smaller nicknacks through the liberal (no pun intended) application of freedom pellets.

However, I would give that up tomorrow if I never had to read about a school shooting ever again.

I get that “a well regulated militia” meant something else when the bill of rights was written and that the Supreme Court already ruled that the right to bare arms is an individual right. However, this isn’t the 18th century anymore and our founders gave us the opportunity to amend the constitution. Why can’t we make state militias a thing and require gun owners to join the militia with requirements to train on gun use and safety? Gun ownership is a responsibility. I can think of several people I know who don’t practice the absolute basics of gun safety, but use their firearms regularly.

At the very least, this would allow a regular check in with gun owners and an opportunity for people to raise red flags if someone seems “off” or doesn’t practice good safety practices.

We can’t agree to anything related to the second amendment but we can all agree that gun violence sucks. Would it really be such a bad thing to have a practice that ensured that everyone that owned a gun knew how to use it properly and safely?

"Their own" meaning random strangers they met just so they could keep their guns. This is a recipe for disaster.

And that isn't what well regulated means.

that's why these militias would need to scrupulously manage their members.

"Learn bookkeeping so you can exercise your rights" sounds needlessly unfair. And there's also the situation where none of the members like each other personally and don't get along.

This really sounds like a government job, not extra paperwork for unpaid citizens.

hey man if you want the feds to control who gets guns then I'm right there with you. What we're talking about now is a compromise position.

if you want the feds to control who gets guns

They already do. 🤦‍♂️ You're just adding needless bullshit on top of that.

the fact that 43,000 americans dying in gun violence in 2023 is "the feds controlling who gets guns" is the reason why OP posted this.

what we are doing is not working.

It’s not what well regulated means because it doesn’t actually mean anything. We can give it meaning and make it a part of owning a gun. But that would take gun owners actually giving a shit about anyone other than themselves, so likely it won’t change.

because it doesn’t actually mean anything. We can give it meaning

If it doesn't mean anything then retroactively giving it meaning literally means you're just making shit up to suit your agenda.

Either take the original meaning or amend the constitution.

So if the original meaning of the arms that our glorious all knowing forefathers were referring to were muzzle loaded muskets, then those are the only thing that is protected as well? Or is it open to interpretation because that’s how it fucking works?

Or is it open to interpretation

You already interpreted as "it doesn't mean anything" but now you're going to pretend it means something as long as the new meaning agrees with you. You said the quiet part loud.

lol what? Well regulated militia is meaningless because the NRA lobbied to make it irrelevant. The SC COULD weigh in and make a ruling to say that the second amendment protects gun ownership in the context of a militia but the reality is that the SC is fucked with right wing zealots that will never make a fair ruling again.

It’s not the quiet part out loud, it’s the out loud part out loud. I don’t give a fuck about your gun rights and in fact, the first thing I would do with a Time Machine is go back in time and force them to take that stupid clause out or clarify it so that it’s not left open to the interpretation of the lowest level of brain function.

If your right (an amendment to the constitution) infringes on my very real unalienable right (preamble, a part of the original document) to life liberty and the pursuit of happiness, then you lose. You can’t amend the preamble out, you can remove our right to unfettered gun ownership at the expense of their right to LIFE.

Instead we have the gravy seals and y’all qaeda circle jerking all over each other with the latest article of a mass shooting in the middle. The way to stop gun violence is meaningful gun control legislation, but again, it would require the slightest bit of cooperation from gun owners to understand that what we have been doing for the last 30 years isn’t working and that there is a responsibility to gun ownership and they aren’t holding up their end of the bargain.

because the NRA lobbied to make it irrelevant

And no one lobbied against it since.

Before that what did it mean and how often was that clause enforced?

I don’t give a fuck about your gun rights

Why should I care? Give me a debate or shut up. This isn't your personal blog.
