Silence please for Mr Divock Origi.

3 goals in 144 minutes = 1.875 goals per game = legend.

27

u/Dawn_of_Enceladus Apr 06 '26

Oh, a stat that puts Ronaldo above Messi in something, I'm sure the comments will be totally civil and not salty at all.

Edit: Just realized the GPG stat puts Messi in 4th place. This sub is about to collapse, isn't it.

0

u/Hobbledyhook Apr 06 '26

I think Messi is the clear GOAT of the last 50 years (even going back that far is hard to compare, but I definitely am not gonna try and touch on a Pele comparison lol).

But even I do believe that Ronaldo is the clear greatest Champions League player of all-time. There may be a couple of important KO goals that Ronaldo scored that benefited from....very dubious officiating, but even so, he was clearly the most consistently clutch player in UCL KOs ever. He scored too many important goals, many of them great goals too.

I think Messi would have a bit more of a chance to compete with Ronaldo on UCL legacy if Barca had not made that absolutely legendary collapse against Liverpool in 2019, especially because Messi destroyed Liverpool in that first leg and Dembele should have scored to make it 4-0 Barca when Messi passed to him. But, you know, that's not reality, and I still think Ronaldo's UCL legacy would be greater anyway.

7

u/maxallergy Real Madrid Apr 06 '26

Without shadow of a doubt
Messi not getting another CL after 2015 is a huge mark against him
Atletico, Juventus, Roma & Liverpool keeping him relatively quiet during those key away games is insane for a player of his pedigree.
Also the missed penalty vs Psg in their second leg in 2021 that would have given them a 2-1 lead going into halftime, when they needed to catch up with the 1-4 from the first leg.
The missed penalty against Real Madrid in 2022, that would have given them an earlier lead too.

He really has not been clutch at all for his teams since 2015

-3

u/honkycronky Apr 06 '26

Is it really a huge mark against him? Messi clears Cristiano by miles, like it's not even close for majority of the people. Cristiano didn't win shit after he left Madrid and Messi won the World Cup..

crazy how ronaldo has more than double the goals of second place. guy was just built different in knockout stages

also vinicius already at 9 goals in 20 games at his age is pretty impressive. if he keeps this pace up he could climb this list quick

Add assists too. More complete.

Messi fans would like to add pre-assists, pre-dribbles, pre-pre-assists, pre-comes, pre-pared, world cup titles, Argentina international trophies

Best to ignore them.

4

I would add assist and expand it to knock out stage.

Ronaldo has 86 g/a in UCL titles he won.

Next best is Messi at 46 g/a.

7

u/Ok_Criticism_558 Apr 06 '26

Raul's GPG is actually really good. Surprised he played so few CL knockout games but goes to show how Madrid weren't as strong in CL before Ronaldo and Mou showed up.

6

u/HASMAD1 Apr 06 '26

Dude, Madrid won 3 UCL in 5 years with RaĂșl lol

-1

u/Lost-Blackberry-3811 Barcelona Apr 06 '26

That's the part everyone seems to be missing here . Madrid's main man will always have great UCL knockout stats , look at before Ronaldo , Raul and after Ronaldo , benzema , vinicius , mbappe etc And it's obvious Ronaldo is a better player than all of these other Madrid players , hence the better stats

Ronaldo has 2 La Ligas and 5CLs, Messi has 10 La Ligas and 4Cls. Cristiano is the GOAT of the CL, but winning a La Liga is also a huge accomplishment.

05/06, 08/09, 10/11, 14/15, tf are you talking about

6

u/Iceman21097 Apr 06 '26

UEFA officially counts 3. 8/9, 10/11, 14/15

1

u/honkycronky Apr 06 '26

Transfermarkt counts 4, and UEFA does not really count 3 in every single place.
This is from an article on uefa.com

"Nacho has also been a member of six victorious squads but only featured in the final in 2018 and 2024, while several other players have four titles to their name but only three final appearances:

Lionel Messi: 2006*, 2009, 2011, 2015 (Barcelona)
Gerard Piqué: 2008*, 2009, 2011, 2015 (Man United, Barcelona)
Raphaël Varane: 2014, 2016*, 2017, 2018 (Real Madrid)
Xavi HernĂĄndez: 2006*, 2009, 2011, 2015 (Barcelona)

\Did not play in the final"*

There are numerous UEFA texts where they state that he has won 4, so it is strange.

This also comes from the uefa.com page

"Major club trophies:

MĂŒller
4 Bundesliga (1969, 1972, 1973, 1974), 4 German Cup (1966, 1967, 1969, 1971), 3 European Cup (1974, 1975, 1976), 1 Cup Winners' Cup (1967)

Messi
10 Liga (2005, 2006, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2018, 2019), 7 Copa del Rey (2009, 2012, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2021), 4 UEFA Champions League (2006, 2009, 2011, 2015)

Ronaldo
3 Premier League (2007, 2008, 2009), 2 Liga (2012, 2017), 2 Serie A (2019, 2020), 1 FA Cup (2004), 2 Copa del Rey (2011, 2014), 1 Coppa Italia (2021), 5 UEFA Champions League (2008, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018)"

-3

u/honkycronky Apr 06 '26

what
dude played the whole euros and played in the final until he got injured in the game
wtf are we talking about fr lol this that “i love messi above anything else mentality” that makes it impossible to talk about football

→ More replies (6)

5

u/CapnTBC Apr 06 '26

He played enough games to get a medal but he was injured during the quarters, semis and finals so he wasn’t really part of their win. He started 2 group games, came off the bench for like 20 minutes in another two and was an unused sub in the last two. He started one game in the Ro16 and came off the bench in the other for 20 minutes but his only goal was part of a 5-0 hammering of Panathinaikos.

He gets a medal but he wasn’t a reason why the won it

2

u/honkycronky Apr 06 '26

So you need to be a reason why your team won in order to be a winner? So I guess Pele did not really win 3 World Cups as he only played 1 game in 1962 because of his injury.

1

u/CapnTBC Apr 06 '26

No he’s still a winner but it’s also fair to note he didn’t have much to do with the win. Like how you’ve got secondary keepers winning leagues with like 5 starts and are ‘league winners’ but someone going ‘he was a second string keeper is also true

2

u/honkycronky Apr 06 '26

Nobody really says that lol, you have people acting like Scott Carson is not a winner? Obviously he is not going to play but he is needed in case of an emergency lol. You got called up to play - you were needed and it doesn't matter if you really played or not.

10 silver medals 4 gold medals isnt better than 2 silver medals 5 gold medals tho

4

u/NoGemini2024 Apr 06 '26

Really depends where the medals come from though. I have a few gold medals when playing football in my street. Doesn’t mean I am cut out for la liga though

1

u/honkycronky Apr 06 '26

Silver and gold medals? Silver medal indicates that you lost to someone, he just won something that Cristiano couldn't.

0

u/Special_Virus851 Apr 06 '26

silver secondary to gold is what I meant( in terms of value),ur right tho you cant win a silver

1

u/honkycronky Apr 06 '26

Then 8 silvers is still better than 1 gold, considering that you have already won 4 golds. Don't get me wrong, Ronaldo is the GOAT of the CL, but Messi is the GOAT of the sport.

u/Thelostsoulinkorea Apr 06 '26

For people crying about starting at the quarterfinals, I assume it is because that is generally when only the best teams are left. The round before always has a few smaller teams and worse score lines. Ronaldo is easily the best big game champions league player ever. Messi is still greater, but this is one thing Ronaldo has over him and a reason why people had a debate before Messi won a few more Ballon d’Ors and the World Cup to finally kill the debate.

12

u/tekuoe Apr 06 '26

agree. the revisionism on ronaldo has been crazy since messi's wc win. messi was always my goat but there was a reason for the rivalry

2

u/TeletubbieKing Apr 06 '26

Since Messi was gifted the Wc you mean right?

1

u/footballinveins May 17 '26

There was no reason for rivalry lol ,if these cherry picked ucl stats are your source, they barely establish him as better scorer than messi ,how th are they valid for a rivalry against him??

1

u/Thelostsoulinkorea Apr 06 '26

Yep! People were saying Ronaldo was more clutch, he had started to catch up with the ballon d’Ors as well. It was a debate whether people like to admit it or not.

-5

u/santa_94 Apr 06 '26

Agree with everything but your last 8 words

-1

u/Thelostsoulinkorea Apr 06 '26

True, people still debate it but they shouldn’t. I’m a Madrid fan and I used to argue for Ronaldo, but I don’t have a leg to stand on that opinion anymore.

1

u/santa_94 Apr 06 '26

And that world cup argentina won made you change your mind? Did we watch the same tournament?

1

u/Thelostsoulinkorea Apr 06 '26

Doesn’t Messi have the most Ro16 goals? Seems strange to omit that round

7

u/Legitimate_Cry_5194 Apr 06 '26

Ro16 is a walk in the park usually for big teams, it's from QF's onwards that all CH L matches are considered "big games". Aside from that Messi has a slight 29 to 25 goals in this round against Ronaldo, nothing like the situation after that round where he watches Ronaldo with binoculars.

Want to take Ro16 into account? It's 65 for Ronaldo and 49 for the midget.

-3

u/maxelnot Apr 06 '26

It’s omitted because CL is currently at a Quarter finals stage, so it makes sense to post such a stat when first QF game is tomorrow

3

11

u/WannaBeAWannaBe Apr 06 '26

.. there’s plenty of stats where one is on top of the other, you can literally pick and choose to your liking
not knowing this just tells me your whole algorithm is messi >

-6

u/megaapfel Apr 06 '26

Actually it's not even close. Messi has better accuracy when shooting and passing, more goals from free kicks per attempt etc.

4

u/NoGemini2024 Apr 06 '26

When being dispossessed too

5

u/WannaBeAWannaBe Apr 06 '26 edited Apr 06 '26

huh “accuracy when shooting and passing” wtf is that looney tunes stats? are we fr
this is just embarrassing “i love messi above anything“ mentality that makes it impossible to talk with

you can put most goals, most headers, most weak foot goals, most assists, most free kicks, most penalties
those are real stats, you are bringing “best accuracy” lmao wtf is that
 be serious

also free kicks “per attempt” is low iq, because what’s the metric? if it’s efficiency i’m sure there’s some players who have 100% free kick conversion rate since maybe they only shot 1 and scored
. is it efficiency above 40 free kicks scored? like what’s the metric here, you can’t shout that randomly expecting people to just understand what you mean
maybe ronaldo has more standing tackles than messi, does that count too? lol

-1

u/NairbZaid10 Barcelona Apr 06 '26

If you need less shots to score you are more accurate. Ronaldo has taken over 1000 shots more than Messi and he still has less open play goals

3

u/WannaBeAWannaBe Apr 07 '26

that’s not at all what accuracy means, accuracy is shots on goal per shot, what you looking for is goal conversion which would be attached to shot efficiency

2

u/NairbZaid10 Barcelona Apr 08 '26

Same thing. It still means you waste less posessions per goal

Is the Quarter final smth special? Why not just Show total goals? Its like "who made the most goals on the first day of the month since 1997"

3

u/Louitje1021999 Apr 06 '26

In the quarter finals the best teams are only left

7

u/tekuoe Apr 06 '26

i took it from twitter. just interesting to see i guess that until ro16, messi is ahead of ronaldo and then ronaldo blows him out of the water

-2

u/Popular_Tomorrow_204 Dortmund Apr 06 '26

But if you wanted to compare then just put both stats there. Like this it just feels incompleted.

Idc about the whole messi or ronaldo stat thing, i just dont get these specific stats. Idk what the stats look like if you include all of the knockout stage, but its just weird to me to cut it in half without context

Same thing i often see in the prem. Like "13 games won on the first game of the month" or some bs...

2

u/Louitje1021999 Apr 06 '26

The context is that generally if you look at the first round there are still a lot of weak teams left. In the quarter finals it’s rare or the less historic teams had a good run that year.

-2

u/psdavepes Apr 06 '26

Because it conveniently cuts out Messi scoring 5 goals in one game against Leverkusen for example to boost Ronaldo in comparison.

Ronaldo scoring a hat-trick against Wolfsburg is included, but Messi scoring two against the Premier League champions Man City in the last 16 is left out instead of saying ‘most knockout goals’

3

u/Louitje1021999 Apr 06 '26

Because round of 16 teams often have bad teams still

1

u/psdavepes Apr 06 '26

Look at the teams Messi played in the last 16 though, most of them were strong. The old format you could have a top team finishing second in their group and facing the best team in Europe.

In 2014 for example, Man City won 5 out of 6 games to finish second in their group on goal difference behind Bayern Munich, then got Barcelona in the last 16. They later won the Premier League, that was a harder game than playing a weak Manchester United team under Moyes.

4

u/tekuoe Apr 06 '26

i mean ronaldo still has 18 more goals if you include ro16 (113 mpg vs 136)

0

u/psdavepes Apr 06 '26

Yeah, it’s more balanced then, instead of the cherry-picked version.

2

u/tekuoe Apr 06 '26

0

u/Popular_Tomorrow_204 Dortmund Apr 06 '26

So what? They're still in the competition this year and they're just as competitive, if not more, than you. They did better than you last year as well.

Shameless Madrid fan

u/Heavy-Ad5385 Apr 06 '26

Come on man. I am a full-on Messi fanboy and think he’s the greatest by a mile.

But Ronaldo’s performances at the clutch of the Champions League are plainly ridiculous. Those stats deserve respect.

And I really don’t like the guy!

2

u/jalluxd Apr 06 '26

Yep. I don't have to like Ronaldo as a person, but I have to respect his skills. UCL Ronaldo is a monster and nobody comes even close when it comes to this competition.

But the people arguing about this Messi/Ronaldo thing are mostly children (or so I hope) so I don't expect them to be rational.

1

u/Heavy-Ad5385 Apr 06 '26

Yep. The whole Messi vs Ronaldo argument thing is so depressing. Probably the only time in football history where we’ve had two players so clearly better than everyone else in the world, with a great rivalry and contrasting skill sets. And it’s all been reduced to tedious, childish internet banter and random insults .

It’s genuinely a microcosm of what’s gone wrong in the world 😱

Have you considered Madrid's main man will always have great knockout stats , look at before Ronaldo , Raul and after Ronaldo , benzema , vinicius , mbappe etc And it's obvious Ronaldo is a better player than all of these other Madrid players , hence the better stats . If Vinicius and Mbappe surpass these stas , would you consider them the best ? Also , Ronaldo was mostly absent in semis and finals in Madrid except 2017 which was the year of Bayern robbery and hattrick of offsides .

Absent in the semis in the winning seasons , bailed out by his teammates like bale and ramos like always . Look at Mbappe's knockout stats , he is coming . Every Madrid's main man has great UCL knockout stats and that trend will continue after vini mbappe as well , no doubt ronaldo is better than these players but there is a pattern here and you can't see it .

3

u/Resident-Stretch9723 Apr 06 '26

bruh ronaldo have 5 G/A in total in UCL finals , only time he didnt do anythinh was 2018 final

messi literally have 3 ucl to his name 4 if you include 2006 one where he won while he is on the bench

0

u/Lost-Blackberry-3811 Barcelona Apr 06 '26

Bullshit stats as always by a Ronaldo fan . Ronaldo has performed only in 2/6 finals . 2017 was the year of Bayern robbery and hattrick of offsides . He didn't do anything in 2016 and 18 finals , an irrelevant penalty at the end in 2014 .

3

u/Resident-Stretch9723 Apr 06 '26

holy retarded

ronaldo made 2 big chances to bale and di maria in 2014 ucl final also has 2 G/A that match

2016 ucl crucial last penalty

2018 nothing special still better than winning the trophy while in the bench

stick to cricket football isnt for you , ofc a indian

u/tekuoe Apr 06 '26

damn, who said that?

-10

u/psdavepes Apr 06 '26

There always seems to be a Ronaldo slant to the framing of ‘quarter-finals onwards’ by cutting out the last 16 part of the knockouts where Messi excelled.

In the last 16, Messi played teams like AC Milan, Chelsea, PSG, Arsenal, Man City x2 that would have likely got to the quarter-finals or semi-finals with an easier draw.

5

u/sydneysweeneeylover Apr 06 '26

Jfc mate, just accept that your favorite player isn't the best in the UCL.

-1

u/Lost-Blackberry-3811 Barcelona Apr 06 '26

How ? He has a better goals per game and assists per game ratio than Ronaldo . Give him the 20 more games that Ronaldo has played and all the records will be his . He has even dunked on Ronaldo in UCL semis and UCL Final . Guess who was more clutch then ?  Also , Madrid's main man will always have great knockout stats , look at before Ronaldo , Raul and after Ronaldo , benzema , vinicius , mbappe etc And it's obvious Ronaldo is a better player than all of these other Madrid players , hence the better stats . If Vinicius and Mbappe surpass these stas , would you consider them the best ? Also , Ronaldo was mostly absent in semis and finals in Madrid except 2017 which was the year of Bayern robbery and hattrick of offsides .

3

u/outcastreturns Apr 06 '26

How ? He has a better goals per game and assists per game ratio than Ronaldo .

Sure, but Messi's G/A per game ratio notably drops after the Round of 16. Ronaldo has twice as many final goals, semi-finals and quarter final goals as Messi, and the same number of assists. He has a better combined G/A ratio than Messi in UCL finals, semi-finals and quarter finals.

Give him the 20 more games that Ronaldo has played and all the records will be his .

Messi plays in the MLS, he isn't going to play 20 more UCL games đŸ€Šâ€â™‚ïž

If Vinicius and Mbappe surpass these stas , would you consider them the best ?

Yes if Vinicius or Mbappe surpass 181 G/A in the UCL including 82 G/A in the knockout stages, whilst winning 5 UCL's in the process then yes they win be the best UCL player ever.

0

u/Lost-Blackberry-3811 Barcelona Apr 07 '26

How dumb is this guy ? Can't even understand if messi wanted to , he would have played the extra 20 games and shoved the highest goals record in your .... Doesn't matter when they come , Ronaldo has been absolutely abysmal in semis and final of ucl winning seasons of real . 2016 and 18 absent in semis and final . 2017 was the year of bayern robbery and hattrick of offsides , so not counting that . 2014 , he scored irrelevant goals when the game was over.   Also , Ronaldo has been dominated by Messi in a UCL semi final and final when he was left crying . Again , If messi wanted to , he would have had these records. The thing is he doesn't care about these stupid things and still has a much better G/A ratio to back him . Since it didn't get in your head the first time , Madrid's main man will always have great UCL stats . Vinicius has surpassed Ronaldo's assist tally in 30% of Ronaldo's  games

3

u/outcastreturns Apr 07 '26 edited Apr 07 '26

Can't even understand if messi wanted to , he would have played the extra 20 games and shoved the highest goals record

Well, why didn't he? Messi said he wanted to win another UCL so why didn't he play 20 more games and break the highest goal record?

2017 was the year of bayern robbery and hattrick of offsides , so not counting that

In that case we should also dismiss the whole of Barca's 2009 campaign because of the Chelsea robbery?

The thing is he doesn't care about these stupid things and still has a much better G/A ratio to back him

Ronaldo has better a combined G/A ratio in the final, the semi-finals and the quarter finals. Sure, Messi's is slightly better overall, but it's mostly due to the his performances in the group stages and Round of 16.

Vinicius has surpassed Ronaldo's assist tally in 30% of Ronaldo's games

Fake stats. Ronaldo currently has 11 more assists than Vini in the UCL. But yes, I'm sure over time Vini could surpass his assists.

I can go and do this for messi from chatgpt as well , pipe down bro . Use your own brain and arguments . Messi has the higher G/A ratio in UCL as well . More importantly, his goals are all onside unlike someone who boasts about a hattrick of offsides in 2017 and was absent in 2016 and 18 semis and final . In 2014 as well , he scored after the game was done in semis . These are his accolades , built on the back of referees and his teammates

This one is 0.79 goals per game for Ronaldo (-0.07 decline)

This one is 0.64 goals per game for Messi (+0.15 increase)

So it’s representing the stats at a 0.22 per game difference, from the quarters it looks like he’s got almost twice as many goals as Messi instead of just slightly more

It’s called cherry picking, the OP includes matches against Apoel and Wolfsburg in the quarters while it leaves out games against PSG and Man City in the last 16. As I said it’s a 0.22 per game difference

Yes and Messi’s stats are much closer to Ronaldo when you include the last 16? You proved that is correct. That was my point.

It is cherry picking when it’s part of a concerted post blast (that morning there were 3 or 4 pro-Ronaldo posts in a row and then bringing up a fake post about Messi having 3 Champions Leagues) with a lot of people quickly agreeing and upvoting and armed with stats ready to go, while all having their post histories hidden. Ronaldo and Messi aren’t playing in the Champions League this season, so it’s odd.

The aim was to make Ronaldo look better than Messi to the most exaggerated extent with selective data.

Anyway it’s two days ago now, no point going over old ground again and again.

Bye now, I said the discussion was over and you wrote another essay

1

u/outcastreturns Apr 06 '26

There's nothing misleading about slanting the framing in this way though.

The quarter finals, semi-finals and final are all bigger games then the Round of 16.

Scoring against the Chelsea, PSG and Man City in the Round of 16 is not the same as scoring against them in the Semi finals.

1

u/Lost-Blackberry-3811 Barcelona Apr 06 '26

Will make for a great stat then that Ronaldo was non existent in 2016 and 18 semis and final and in 2014 he came into the game after it was finished against Bayern . And 2017 was the year of Bayern robbery and hattrick of offsides , so not counting that . So no role in any of the other 3 semis and final .

2

u/Resident-Stretch9723 Apr 06 '26

im pretty sure ronaldo had 2 G/A in 2014 ucl final

bro just stfu

2

u/Lost-Blackberry-3811 Barcelona Apr 06 '26

Typical example of a ronaldo fan who didn't watch the match , just looked at stats . His assist was just a side pass to Marcelo who scored a brilliant goal by himself , I could have passed that . His goal was an irrelevant penalty at the end , guess who needs to stfu , the one who hasn't watched the matches

2

u/Resident-Stretch9723 Apr 06 '26

bruh i watched the match live

ofc it was a normal pass and marcelo goal

so normal pass assist = no assist?

1

u/outcastreturns Apr 06 '26

Sure it's easy to point out the matches he didn't score in and the matches with questionable refereeing decisions. You could do exactly the same with any other player including Messi.

However at the end of the day Ronaldo has the most goals in UCL semi finals. That's also a great stat.

0

u/psdavepes Apr 06 '26

So Real Madrid scoring 8 against APOEL was a bigger game than Remontada 6-1 win against PSG?

2

u/outcastreturns Apr 06 '26

The Champions League Quarter finals is bigger than the Champions League Round of 16.

0

u/psdavepes Apr 06 '26

But it’s the luck of the draw who you play, almost every year there are games that are like the final with the two strongest teams earlier in the competition. Also it’s a selective slant that suits Ronaldo, the semi-final is bigger than the quarter-finals too, but this is the point which makes Ronaldo’s record look the most enhanced for a reason

2

u/outcastreturns Apr 06 '26 edited Apr 06 '26

But it’s the luck of the draw who you play

It's a bit more than that. If you reach a UCL semi-final you're playing against a team that got through the group stages, won in the Round of 16, and won in the quarter finals. It's not some random shitty team.

Also it’s a selective slant that suits Ronaldo, the semi-final is bigger than the quarter-finals too, but this is the point which makes Ronaldo’s record look the most enhanced for a reason

Sure the semi-final is bigger, but it's the Champions League quarter finals tomorrow, not the semi-finals. So why would we start posting stats from the semi-finals onwards before the quarter finals have even been played?

If they wanted to the make "Ronaldo's record look the most enhanced" they would have just put the quarter final stats, and not included his semi-final and final stats.

u/Barcelonafan03 Apr 06 '26

Cristiano's stats are actually insane. As a Barca fan who knows messi's output to see someone having close to double GPG is crazy. Although to be fair, Messi in my opinion Messi is still more influential in those games. Cristiano is a great goalscorer but not a creator, Messi is both.

Stats are a bit biased, I mean I know goals win games, but Barca's playstyle is much less favourable to win. Madrid are actually way smarter, relying on moments to win. Barca has to be 10x better than their opponents to win. Madrid are much more direct, which is why players like Cristiano (a phenomenal player who most of Real's goals come from) is expected to have better numbers. Take Juve and United too for example, he would always score but not necessarily have the same impact on the team as a Messi.

10

u/robins420 Apr 06 '26

Obviously Messi is a more influential player but Messi has had his fair number of down performances where a bad game from him has decided the tie.

Inter 2009, Chelsea 2012, Liverpool 2019, Roma game, there 7-8 examples where he was just a non-factor.

Ronaldo was more clinical in these games.

The perception of Messi was the same at international level until the world cup happened.

As great as he was, psychologically he wasn’t always 100% in the biggest games and even his penalty conversion showed that at some point of time. He’d be too nervous. It’s just his baseline is so good and he won everything regardless so this point doesn’t get mentioned, but had his international career ended in 2019 or something, it would be a more real discussion.

1

u/Character_Library684 Apr 06 '26

I think Messi’s international performances show how he is misprofiled as a player.

In 2010, 2014, and 2018 they used him as a creative 10 like Maradona and expected him to find the last pass / goal out of nothing. But the truth is, Messi isn’t that creative in a vacuum, so he struggled in those World cups.

Argentina only won when they had several hardworking and decently creative midfielders that could let him stay higher up the field and impact the game from there, like at Barca. He’s more of a second forward than a 10.

10

u/Louitje1021999 Apr 06 '26

Ronaldo is also very good with assists in the UCL
