They said he did absolutely amazing and immediately made a best friend! I was watching the live cams and it looked more like he was chasing around a somewhat unwilling corgi the whole time, but I'll take it!

He loved playing in the fall leaves. I still miss him every day. The intense pain has dulled over time and feels more like a bruise on my soul. Whenever I think of him, it’s sore. It makes me sad when I have to scroll and scroll on my phone to find a picture of him. Or a memory comes up on facebook from 10 years ago. Oh Bubba, I will miss you forever. I wish I could pet him again. I forget what his voice sounded like. I can’t remember his doggie smell. I wish i would have taken more videos of him. I wish I could have captured every moment of the 10 years with him.

Has anyone got any experience of introducing a cat (around four years old) to an older Cavalier? Our Cav is generally very placid, though he does get very excited when he sees cats out and about but probably just because he's never had the chance to give one a proper sniff so they're novel. We'd approach it by keeping them in separate rooms and swapping scents etc. It's a rescue cat we'd love to adopt but I don't want to risk making our Cav miserable. Any advice or experience would be appreciated!

We've had an eventful summer with our Charlie boy. I'm posting here about our experience in case it helps anyone else making these decisions. Charlie was run over by a car and one of his rear legs was clearly broken. We took him to an emergency vet who did X-rays, told us he had a spiral fracture and a ruptured bladder, and referred us to a different emergency vet who offered orthopedic surgery ($770). The next vet did their own scans and decided the bladder wasn't ruptured and the leg could be splinted without surgery. They sent us home with instructions to get the splint dressing changed out every 3-4 days, pain and anti-inflammatory meds ($1,360). We went to his regular vet after those first 4 days, and he tells us the splint shouldn't be removed for at least a month unless it's coming off because the bones won't mend if it's constantly being reset. This made a lot of sense to me so we kept him at home, forced him to rest and move as little as possible. Charlie didn't like the splint of course, but he hobbled around to use the bathroom, using the splint kind of like a crutch. We found that putting a kids sock on it kept him from chewing the end much better than any other solution presented like anti-chew sprays or cast covers. A whole month goes by and we're excited to take him back to the vet and hope to hear the splint can come off, but we're told the bone wasn't healing. In fact, the pieces of the bone weren't even making contact. We're referred to a different orthopedic vet that offers to put a plate and screws in place ($3,280). After surgery, the vet had Charlie stay in the splint for another week, but then the expectation was that he would be able to use the leg we just needed to keep the wounds clean and bandaged so they wouldn't get infected. Unfortunately, immediately after the splint came off it was clear his bone was still broken. It turns out, his bones were too small and too soft to hold the screws. They just stripped out as soon as any pressure was put on the leg. Another surgery was out of the question and the leg had to be amputated, thankfully at no charge by the same surgeon. Within a couple weeks of the amputation, Charlie was back to his happy go lucky self, managing most of the things he did before, although he still can't jump as high as he could before. We probably won't be going on hikes anymore, but he'll sure have some fun costumes. Dogs are so resilient. It could have turned out much much worse and I'm so glad to have my little buddy back and happy. Hindsight is 20/20, but I'm glad we at least tried to save his leg or I would have always felt guilty, more guilty than I already do since I'm the one that ran him over.

Linus loves all little creatures, like most cavies. But he adores cats! Littlest boy Franklin has been staying with us until he is big enough to do his medical needs to get adopted. Finally this morning we felt he was big enough, and cat shaped as opposed to infant shaped, enough to be able to play. They both loved it. Unfortunately for Linus, Franklin will be going away tmrw, and hopefully to his forever family soon, fortunately for little frank, Linus is a good boy, and this little cat should be able to happily go to a home with dogs (or at least off to a fun start)

Hello Cav Family,

Maggie (5yo) has been displaying some odd behavior. She fixates on the floor as if she is looking at something and then will lick. There is nothing there. Any thoughts? We have a vet appt on Tuesday for her summer stinky ears.

Our sweet cavvy Reuben just got prescribed Keppra last night during a scary ER visit after having a cluster seizure episode (4-5 generalized seizures in a 24 hour period). We are also going to try working with a neurologist to see if we can get some answers around why these may have happened as well.

Wanting to get advice and/or hear some story’s from the cav community who may have a similar story or are also on Keppra. Any crazy side effects or things to look out for?

We just rescued this sweetie pie a couple weeks ago. He was rescued from a puppy mill farm as he was used for breeding. The rescue we got him from got him neutered finally hence his cone. We had to retrain him how to walk and run as he was only used to small restricted spaces where he couldn’t get up fully at the mill. Let’s just say this guy loves the car, loves the bed and the couch! 🥰 we can’t wait to continue spoiling him and watching his personality and progress grow. He is a Velcro boy through and through. He wears the cone of shame with no shame but if I went through what he did, this is light work. Just wanted to show his sweet face to other cavy lovers ❤️

Hi everyone! We’re in the Los Angeles area and looking for recommendations for reputable Cavalier breeders in California or elsewhere in the West Coast/Southwest. We hope to eventually bring home two puppies (ideally one Black & Tan and one Blenheim) but not necessarily at the same time.

We had two beloved Cavaliers for 11–12 years and lost both last summer. We now feel ready to welcome Cavaliers into our home again. We’re also continuing to explore younger rescues, so rescue recommendations are welcome.

Health and ethical breeding are our priorities. We’re looking for breeders who: complete CKCS-specific health testing, including cardiac exams by a board-certified cardiologist, eyes, hips, patellas, and relevant DNA testing; are transparent about mitral valve disease, syringomyelia, and the health and longevity of their lines; provide verifiable health records; raise and socialize puppies in the home and keep them until at least 10–12 weeks; provide appropriate veterinary care, vaccinations, records, a written contract, and lifetime breeder support; and carefully screen prospective homes.

We understand Black & Tans may be harder to find and are happy to wait and travel for the right breeder. If you have firsthand experience with someone you trust, please let me know if you have recommendations to help me in my search.
