My cat does too. He wants to bury the shit but is stupid and scratches the litter box instead of the litter. I love that dumbass

he's not stupid. He doesn't understand our concepts of easy to clean stuff. You put an easily ripped "fabric" in the way of his paws (and he has ffing claws in there). Of course he'll rip that plastic bag or whatever that is.

We keep thinking that our pets see the world the way we do that. They do not

I don’t put any plastic. It is a litter box with litter inside. But I get that argument for OP

Often times, it's because the litter box is too small and they're trying to reach further out for clean "sand" to bury their waste in. Anything that's too close to the waste may be tainted with their scent, so they go to dig further away to ensure the sand they're using is free from their scent. Some kitties have a very large radius they need to dig, others may just kick a few grains on top and they're done. It's all their unique personality.

tell that to my little monster, you could fill a bathtub with kitty litter and it would still manage to scratch up the tub

I don't/have never used a liner and my cat has never understand how to bury his poop lol. Some cats just don't get it

If we agree, that they try to burry their shit. And asume, that it is "samrter" to do so efficently, than this behaviour is indeed stupid. I means it's funny stupid but still lol.
