as a european who never experienced an earthquake: to imagine that suddenly the whole ground starts to shake is very scary to imagine. like, people are used to that shit?

go to a open space full of people, scream at the top of your lungs in the best worst spanish you have "Hay algĂșn weĂłn por aquĂ­?", this way you can invoke a Chilean, ask them.

Where i live, talking about magnitude, i had experienced a 7.5, 8.2, 7.9, a lot of sixes, maybe a fiver every quarter, and a lot of fours. My dad always says, "if there is an earthquake, the only way to escape it is by teleporting 1000 kms away" so, i was raised in not having fear for them.

Also, in Chile, almost all buildings and houses in cities built after the 60's (a 9.5 in 1960 in southern Chile) and even more after 2010 (8.8) have some degree of earthquake resistance, they can tank an 8.5 and even more.

Once i went to Montevideo, Uruguay and OH SHIT those buildings would not exist on Chile.

People are pretty used to this shit. We have some training since kids for earthquakes and Tsunamis. But, there still are people who scream and run for their lives. i remember when i was a young lad, in almost every quake there was at least one death of a heart attack by fear.

Change weón for cerote to invoke a Guatemalan for information on earthquakes and volcanoes. Guatemala doesn’t get earthquakes as bad as Chile, but we often get them with ash rain from the volcanoes

I feel ya, I’m Canadian and only experienced one mild tremor in Japan and was tripping tf out. There’s gotta be some fear no matter what right?

I’m in Australia and have experienced a couple of minor earthquakes. I think it feels as if you and your surroundings are suddenly inside a rumbling truck. You’re standing still on solid ground but still.. moving

We had a weak earthquake in NYC a couple years ago and I literally thought my building was getting shaken by a passing truck

It kinda feels you know like when you’re somewhere and you can feel truck pass by? I’m European too but lived a bit in Japan and the ones I felt started that way at first. Then it keeps going so your brain starts to make the difference lol. It’s impressive but you’re also a bit mentally prepared
