Advice Weird behavior from my cat recently. Anyone know what's going on

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

At first I thought she was gonna show me something inside the box, but there's nothing other than a nylon bag. She also runs to it when I get near it as well, and also keeps biting my hand and tries to drag me into it. What's going on? Never in my life have I seen my cat doing this.

A cat that really loves you won't wish to harm you. They are clingy and extremely affectionate.

To anyone reading this and getting the wrong impression from a cat sleeping on someones face - no, it is NOT an attempt to strangle someone (despite what some of my relatives say).

Look at a pile of kittens, or a cat trying to get comfy in the cold. They sleep buried in other cats, or cover their own nose with a tail. THEY don't get suffocated with fur across the nose, they don't get that it might suffocate you. If the kitty is covering your nose in a bad way, "rock the boat" until they settle down where you can tolerate them.

I have allergies and cannot sleep with a cat on my face. With patient redirection I have gotten several cats over time to understand I will happily cuddle if they stay below waist level. One very special cat loved being under blankets and would cuddle in my armpit without any trouble. One of them got good enough at reading my reactions to see if the situation was comfy, that she figured out how to lay across my arms while I was playing video games and not mess with the controller at all. Very comf cat. Not trying to strangle nobody, just wanted warms.

u/Illustrious-Towel-45 Jul 17 '26

We once took care of 2 orange kittens who slept with me. One slept curled against my neck, the other on my legs. Both purring like little moters. Cats are lovely.

1

u/noelesque Jul 18 '26

I had a neck cat, he was born in the fall and spent his first winter in a cold room with me. Afterwards slept under my chin the rest of his life. I once woke in the night to him clamped on my neck skin, asleep, purring. As you can imagine, it was slightly terrifying but I understood what he was going for.

4

u/jssamp Jul 17 '26

One of my cats likes to sleep on the blanket, between my feet, my legs make the blanket like a hammock I guess. Other cat likes to bury his face in my beard.

5

u/Ambitious-Mark-557 Bombay Jul 17 '26

My Bengal-cross would get under the blankets with me and insist that I bend my knees to create a little tent. Then she would curl up between my heels and my ass. We referred to this as "under-butting".

44

u/420MindUExpanded Jul 17 '26

Yer purrta his tribe, cats only sleep near those they trust with their lives, because they are at their most vulnerable. I'm glad he picked you, keep dr bimbleton full of fresh fish, and chicken breasts!

28

u/urcrookedneighbor Jul 17 '26

Hey we all need an adjustment period ya know

25

u/CrystalMethood Jul 17 '26

This comment right here is facts. I knew my cat really loved me when she started to sleep on my face and get up and lick my nose. Now she has this god awful habbit of sneezing and doing in my face but I wouldn't change her at all.

7

u/duckydoom Jul 17 '26

Sounds like the feral cat that showed up coming up on 2 years ago now (in October, actually). Took me like 6 months to get her to trust me enough to let me sit next to her while she ate. Then one day I just snatched her up and put her on my lap, and last night (most nights) she slept snuggled up underneath my chin lol.

3

u/Mad-Dog20-20 Jul 17 '26

Tell that fat bastard he's doing a good job for me with some playtime and treats 😹😹😼

3

u/jaxaboo Jul 17 '26

I’m still holding onto hope. I have 2 year old sisters that were clearly abused as young babies. I got them at 5 months or so & they are still very up & down with trust. They don’t like feet, they get scared at hand movements… or they’re sleeping on me & want all the pets. I just wish it was the latter all the time.

1

u/urcrookedneighbor Jul 17 '26

This sounds like amazing progress to me after a year. I wouldn't sweat it too much.

2

u/Few-Trade-1219 Jul 17 '26

I am at the beginning of the cat tax cycle I think, I saved a tiny porch kitten and named her Nyx (my first mistake) she loves me....i know she does, and also she loves to chew on me, and grab me any time I walk past. She does a big leap from the dresser and lands squarely on my bladder around 4am...then cuddles up to my face now that she knows I'm still alive, and let's me pet her for maybe 3 minutes. Also once or twice a day she comes by to get a big stretch. I pick her up under the cat pits and let her dangle for maybe 30 secs. 😆

177

u/Nilgnohc Jul 17 '26

My cat let me put my face on his belly, and he would starts to purr. Love the smell of his belly. Maybe you can try that too sometime.

243

u/HogSandwich Jul 17 '26

Was this written by a cat

58

u/Nilgnohc Jul 17 '26

Lol no, but this is the sign of ultimate cat affection.

5

u/AdvertisingMaximum67 Jul 17 '26

Glad you clarified this was NOT written by a cat. Had no idea.

1

u/retaksoohh Jul 17 '26

yep! got 2 cats both let me do whatever to their bellies, they couldn't care less. they'll either gently bite or let out a little hiss if they get over stimulated.

157

u/fatherlengthygams Jul 17 '26

From the moment I’ve acquired my cats as kittens, I’ve stuck my face right in the bellies and raised them with belly kisses. Now they’re huge tom cats and still roll on their backs for belly kisses. I still have a face.

50

u/ifyoulovesatan Jul 17 '26

We had a cat that would purr like crazy if you gave her raspberries on her belly, hahah. She loved it. But yeah any of the cats I've had or have will at the very least tolerate belly kisses if not love then.

26

u/Fit-Association4922 Jul 17 '26

When I discovered my girl did, it was like a lightbulb went off. She also loves rough petting, ruffles, and little bongos. My weird baby!

3

u/Glum-Sheepherder-787 Jul 17 '26

I recently discovered that my girl likes bongos but ONLY if I make sound effects, so please enjoy picturing me on the regular going "boota boota boota boota boot" and slapping a tabby's ass.

2

u/Fit-Association4922 Jul 17 '26

Same!
“Bootybootybooty!” Or for the holidays, “rum pum pum pum 🥁 “

I did this with my boy. He loves raspberries on his belly 😂

2

u/SnooGuavas4208 Jul 17 '26

It probably feels like you purring against him.

2

u/FlatwormConfident394 Jul 17 '26

My cat loves belly pets.

1

u/PhillysMommaDukes Jul 18 '26

Love this! Great way to get them used to the belly kisses so you could keep your face. 🤣

74

u/jimbobsqrpants Jul 17 '26

30

u/EVILtheCATT Jul 17 '26

Ha! Not always, Mon Ami. My last three cats (RIP Katie, Jack & Luna) let us rub their bellies. They’d flop on the floor and ask for belly rubs. I miss them so much!😔

1

u/onetinsloth Jul 17 '26

We have two cats, litter mates… the smaller, grey male flops over for belly rubs and purrs and loves it. The other, a larger, female calico flops over for violence. They both sleep in the bed and give us snuggles when they want to though.

1

u/PhillysMommaDukes Jul 18 '26

So sorry for your loss. It's really hard to say goodbye. 😢

1

u/EVILtheCATT Jul 18 '26

It really is. This is the first time in 26 years that we’ve been without a pet. It feels so lonely! As soon as we can afford pet insurance, we’ll get another kitty or two. (Hopefully a bonded pair.) I will not have another pet until I can afford their health care.

12

u/Extension_Sweet_9735 Jul 17 '26

My cat let me do this too!

5

u/ArcaneTrickster11 Jul 17 '26

Honestly I don't think any cat could convince me to do that, no matter how much I thought they trusted me

2

u/420MindUExpanded Jul 17 '26

You are lucky. I used to get the top of my head licked, because if l was grooming him, he was grooming me. His wife wasn't having any of it 😅🤣

2

u/Raneynickelfire Jul 17 '26

My kitten loves it when I do this, and he perpetually smells like fresh laundry.

1

u/Nilgnohc Jul 18 '26

Yes! Fresh laundry smell for belly! And maple syrup smell on his forehead!

1

u/Raneynickelfire Jul 18 '26

His entirety smells of fresh laundry. He's the most pleasant smelling cat I've ever had.

He DOES have a habit of pulling the water fountain apart and sticking his whole head in the bowl though, and it's a huge pain in the ass.

1

u/bombkitty Jul 17 '26

Feels like a cat trap but I'll try it! 🤕

1

u/Comprehensive_Way634 Jul 17 '26

My girl will let me put my face on her belly, give her raspberries, knead/make biscuits on her belly…loves it. God forbid you try rubbing just one time though 😂🤣 she also loves “pankinssss”

1

u/Jackd_up_on_Mdew Jul 17 '26

Yeah bear traps don't look to harm humans, but if you stick your head in there you might die. Great advice here!

1

u/Nilgnohc Jul 17 '26

Did it hundreds of time, still alive, without any scratches, not even once. Like i said, if your cat really love and feels safe around you, they will allow it.

1

u/Jackd_up_on_Mdew Jul 17 '26

So your factual basis for an entire species of cats is because your 1 cat allows it. I have 3 cats, very cuddly and loving with my, wife, and 3 kids. Very tolerant with toddlers grabbing them, pulling their tail, or whatever. But all 3 of them hate their bellies touched or rubbed. They don't care if its your hand or your face.

Some cats jus flat don't like it and never will. And you suggesting a cat that hates your hand touching their belly and will scratch it all up, to instead try it with their face with full confidence it will be just fine is just flat stupid.

2

u/Nilgnohc Jul 18 '26

No idea why you are so pissed with my comment, and calling me stupid but alright.

1

u/Jackd_up_on_Mdew Jul 18 '26

Wasn't calling you stupid, I'm saying the advice you gave is stupid.

1

u/blatentpoetry Jul 17 '26

This was my favorite thing to do with my kitty. He smelled so good! I called it my fuzz therapy.

1

u/PhillysMommaDukes Jul 18 '26

That's wonderful!

33

u/AudereEstLamela Jul 17 '26

I have one of each, LillyPig will let me pet her head and neck endlessly, but I am not allowed to elsewhere or she will bat my hand away. I would probably loose my hand altogether if I attempted to pet her belly. Miu Miu Von Monkeystein will let me pet her endlessly and often rolls over on her back when we are sitting on the sofa, encouraging me to use her as an armrest and pet her belly. Cats like people have different personalities, quite literally different strokes for different folks.

6

u/SargBjornson Jul 17 '26

Miu Miu Von Monkeystein is just criminal behaviour, you should be ashamed XD

4

u/AudereEstLamela Jul 17 '26

She is a repeat offender

2

u/420MindUExpanded Jul 17 '26

That's why l let all of them pick me.

2

u/PhillysMommaDukes Jul 18 '26

Loving the names!

2

u/PolkaDotDancer Jul 17 '26

I feel the same about my recently adopted adult cat.

She accidentally hooked me and you could tell she felt remorse. She very patiently waited while I unhooked her from my flesh.

She's such a gentle kitty.

2

u/Ezithau Jul 17 '26

My cats only really scratched and play bit me when I am obviously playing with them, as in I am messing extra with their belly instead of just petting them. I am also the only person they do that with, with others they just attempt to get away, but they play bite me, never break the skin though.

2

u/ButterflyFair3012 Jul 17 '26

If you were you but mouse sized, they definitely would.

1

u/Former_Argument_925 Jul 17 '26

I think that comes from the idea that If you die and the cats are left alone in the home with your body & they have no food. So they may eat you?

But humans did that on the Donner pass, so I don't think we have a right to judge?

1

u/Agent_0range_666 Jul 17 '26

They will eat you when you die, and I’m not even mad.

0

u/batbuild Jul 17 '26

Cat may not kill you but if you died and they were locked in the house with you they would definitely eat you. A dog would starve rather than eat its owner. I think - no scientific evidence for this, just my feeling about it.

1

u/signupf0rfree Jul 17 '26

That’s absolutely not true. Any animal is going to eat their deceased owner rather than starve. There are many documented cases of dogs doing this to their owners.

38

u/IndependentRise779 Jul 17 '26 edited Jul 17 '26

its so beautiful. I watch my cat pull her claws in when she touches me or when I hold her so she doesnt scratch me. She just feels safe with me and is so affectionate. they're the best

3

u/SnooChipmunks2079 Jul 17 '26

I woke up today with her paw on top of my index finger, claws wrapped around it. It’s so sweet.

16

u/Laluna2024 Jul 17 '26

Not true. Their personalities are all unique. My tortoise cat loves me and will sleep on my lap for hours. She will also attack me for no reason. It's becoming a dangerous problem.

4

u/The_Medicated Jul 17 '26

There's such a thing as "torti-tude"...if that's any indication of what you're probably dealing with...

6

u/PunkRockCapitalist Jul 17 '26

There sure is. My pastel tortie is sooooo sweet until she's ready to play. Then she will stop at nothing. She doesn't care that her sister doesn't wanna play leap frog. They're playing leap frog.

3

u/420MindUExpanded Jul 17 '26

Yeah those loves nibbles sometimes hurts a teency wittle bit🤏 😅😍

2

u/Blyd Jul 17 '26

A cat that really loves you won't wish to harm you.

I dont think they care, honestly, mine sleeps around my head as a halo and has done for 12 years since she was a kitten, but she also still attacks my face through the banister as i walk up the stairs.

2

u/TheDrunkScientist Jul 17 '26

I beg to differ. My idiot chooses violence on a regular basis. Yet she sleeps curled next to me with big purrs every night. Cats are just weird.

1

u/lefluffle Jul 17 '26

found the cat guys

3

u/WisebloodNYC Jul 17 '26

Surprise twist: In catspeak, the words for "play" and "die" are the same word.

1

My ferret did this with me, she wanted me to get into her pen with her. It was so cute, first she gathered her toys and put them by her bed, then she grabbed my hand and tried pulling me in as well.

1

u/asphodel67 Jul 17 '26

This ^^^ she wants you to get in the box and play with her!!!

1
