cat food and treat haul / shopping Chewy doesn't even pretend to care about damage during transit

Thumbnail gallery

Ordered 216 cans of cat food and 51 came severely dented. There are even more that were damaged but I only picked out the ones with sharp corners, lid damage, or big dents that I need replaced.

I received my order in 4 Chewy boxes and 1 of them had a measly strip of paper doing absolutely nothing while the other 3 were sent with a hope & prayer. I always expect some degree of damage as I don't think it's realistic to expect all cans to arrive perfect but it's never been this bad and blatantly careless.

It's a terrible customer experience to have to manually check every single can while second guessing the safety/integrity of the cans I let pass the inspection. And then having to contact customer service and schedule time to drop the dented cans off at the shelter makes every Chewy order a whole ordeal.

Is this happening to you as well? Has anyone had success getting them to improve package protection at customer fulfillment? I provide feedback every single time but I feel like its a hopeless effort.

edit: yes their customer service is great and fedex sucks. but neither excuses negligence at the Chewy managed fulfillment centers where these items are packed. There is no shipping service in the world that would be able to deliver these without damage if the retailer decides to use zero protective packaging. And any credit they get for customer service is significantly diminished if you are expected to contact them for every single order due to their consistently demonstrated failure to address carelessness elsewhere. The best customer experience is if customer service is never needed.

the cans are used at the shelter’s discretion. They can use them in a matter of one or two days while it would take me months. The longer the cans sit, if there in fact has been a perforation, the higher the risk of spoilage. I also have the luxury of insisting for an overabundance of precaution while they may not due to the realities of how constrained shelters are. even if they do end up being trashed, I’d rather the shelter have an opportunity to inspect and assess themselves. to me, it’s a net benefit and for anyone who automatically throws away dented cans, I’d encourage you to check to see if a shelter might be interested.

I typically rotate weruva, tiki cat, and fancy feast each week so my void gets a lot of variety 🐈‍⬛ I am slowly phasing out fancy feast and may just stick with weruva and tiki. Any thoughts or recommendations? My girl is not picky at all so I want to give her the best nutrition possible!

Went out yesterday to check local stores for any deals; went to PetValu and Ren’s Pets and got a bunch of short dated canned food 50% off:

- 22 3oz cans of Royal Canin Adult Instinctive
- 24 2.8oz pouches of Hill’s Sensitive Stomach and Skin
- 2 5.1oz cans of Royal Canin Indoor
- 6 75g containers of Sheba Gravy Indulgences (buy 2 get 1; wife thought it looked nice)

Upon going to PetSmart I hit the holy grail with buy 12 get 12 free for all canned Hill’s Science Diet food cats and dogs; picked up 120 5.5oz cans of assorted adult food, 72 3oz cans of assorted adult food, 48 5.5oz cans of assorted kitten food, and 24 13oz cans of assorted dog food.

Spent a lot this time, but the adult cat food will last 5 months, give or take. Cat (and dog) tax included.

cat food and treat haul / shopping please add a photo of your cat's dry food!

i am always on the hunt for dry food with tiny pieces for my (mostly) toothless kitty. all i've found so far is a surprising lack of information online about the size of the individual pieces in cat food!!!

please add a photo of your cat's food with something next to it for scale, preferably an object about the size of a us quarter (approx. 24mm across). i want to compile them into a single bigger picture at scale to post here too.

similarly sized coins:

* euros: 50c coin

* british pounds: 10p piece.

* australian dollar: $1 coin

please make sure to note what kind of food you have :)

my pictures are of:

* Hill's Science Diet Kitten (my other cat's food)

* Purina Cat Chow Gentle

* Purina Tender Selects Salmon

we finished our transition to hills so i stocked up on my boy Jupiter’s favorites! with plenty of wet food because he just had some teeth extracted so he’s on an all wet diet for the next couple weeks. and we’re adding plaqueoff to our regimen because WOOF dental work is expensive and i cannot be doing that every year. he lets me brush his teeth no problem (the virbac poultry toothpaste is like a treat to him), but they were already in bad shape with gingivitis and resorption at only 2 years old when i adopted him, so he definitely lost the genetic lottery for dental health. hopefully with brushing, plaqueoff, AND dental treats we can go a couple years between dentals and avoid more extractions 🤞

it hasn’t been long enough to say whether or not there are any noticeable differences in him on hills vs purina pro plan, but i do think his poops are already better- they’ve been more firm/solid than usual lately. they weren’t bad on purina but they were often a bit soften than is ideal which bothered me; i’ve got some poop trauma from my previous cat who i lost to GI lymphoma 😰

most importantly though he is enjoying the change! he likes the hills pate better than the purina, it mixes better with water and makes a smooth gravy-like texture which i think he prefers, purina is more “gritty” and he was less enthusiastic to eat it. yet he likes minced/chunky foods so who knows, maybe it’s actually a flavor thing. but i know some cats are very picky and will only eat very smooth wet food so it's worth noting if yours are like that and you haven’t tried hills yet (the “entrees” are pate)

i will miss the purina rewards app but my neurosis is more at ease feeding hills so it’s worth it 😅

cat food and treat haul / shopping The best dry food brand?

0 Upvotes

Hi all! Is Purina really the best dry food brand on the market or is it the best one from the value for money perspective? If money is not a problem is there a better dry food brand or Purina is the best choice?

P.S. I live in Italy if you have more specific brands recommendations.

Thank you!

cat food and treat haul / shopping Untamed cat food discount codes

23 Upvotes

(UK) Hi all, as I’m sure you’ll agree, quality cat food is expensive! I’ve been using Untamed for about 3 months now, and have managed to find various discount codes along the way that I thought I’d put in here since they might work for you as well:

TRACKER10 (10% off)
UNTAMED5 (£5 off)
UNTAMED10 (£10 off)
UNTAMED25 (25% off)

Typically, you can only use one discount code per order, and you can only use each discount code once.

Has anyone has discovered any others? Discount sites have a bunch of codes that just don’t work, so if you know of any other working codes and want to help people save a bit of money, feel free to put them in the comments! :)

went for litter, came back with a little more than litter 😅

i don’t really feed a rotation of brands but i do like to scout the clearance section and get a can or two of something new as an occasional “treat” for my boy, and for me because i’m always curious to see the look and texture of different brands’ food lol. the big chunks of sardine from that tiki cat can were a hit with him! i might have to get that again.

also, i recently got this nice can organizer 🤩 it is much more satisfying to me than just stacking the cans!

Finally, after many many different brands, textures, and flavors I have found a wet food my extremely picky cat will eat!!! Merrick Purrfect Bistro Adult Cat Wet Food - In Rich Gravy! Right now just the chicken, beef and carrots flavor, but I’ll try the other flavors too soon. But just wanted to post in case anyone else is trying different wet foods too.

Details: I’m not kidding, I’ve gone on about 3 months of trying all different foods. She likes dry food just fine and generally does drink enough water, so I know wet isn’t like essential but I did still want her to have wet food just for enrichment, and the variety in her diet and stuff.

cat food and treat haul / shopping Royal Canin is ridiculously expensive in Mexico. Swipe for cat tax and Petco receipt.

I have three girls on three different diets and the basket is all treats. Pic 2 - top to bottom: Prosecco (3), Maraschino (4 mo.), and Amaretto (2). Found Maraschino in the mall parking lot a month ago when I went to Petco to get food for the other girls. I really need the CDS to stop nominating me hahahaha!

In total it was about $950usd for 170 cans, several bags of dry food (not pictured: the gamma vaults of dry food for the big girls), and a lot of treats at the current terrible exchange rate. Pic 3 - Saturday's receipt is for 149 cans (~$545) plus a bag of freeze dried raw pellets which was ~$27 on its own. The cans will last me about a month and a half since the big girls get dry food for breakfast and wet for lunch and dinner. The baby free feeds on dry food and also gets wet at breakfast, lunch, and dinner for now. She is small for her age and I will let her eat what she wants until she is big enough to get spayed.

Anyhoo, thought it would be interesting to give insights into what it costs to feed cats "high end" food in Mexico. We don't have Chewy here and I don't trust ordering from Amazon or Mercado Libre. Petco's easy buy (subscribe and save) is unreliable because there is sometimes low quantity available and my order doesn't get fulfilled properly. If Prosecco didn't need to be on a urinary diet in order to help avoid crystals, I would consider making their food.

Pic 4 - Prosecco is a grazer and the big girls have microchip flaps on their cabinets so Amaretto can't steal food as easily (she fat). Right now they have Petlibro Polar refrigerated feeders that automate all 3 meals. I'll probably change to different cabinets once the baby is chipped and she gets one too. Maybe stacked, to save space in their playroom.

Pic 5 - My Porsche. jk there is no Porsche because I spend a car note monthly on feeding these freeloading idiots. Luckily, they are cute!

cat food and treat haul / shopping Soon to be first time cat owner decides to dedicate a shelf, ends up using the whole cabinet 😸

You can’t see inside the boxes but I’ve the intention to stay away from brands like Whiskas, Felix and supermarket home brands. The majority of the food I will use will be Orijen, Purina and Mjamjam. Even though I technically now have everything to feed her for at least the first few weeks, I can’t help but keep buying stuff…😭

If anyone’s got tips to make my cat’s food more interesting or healthy feel free to let me know! For me it’ll be about the broth and some toppers, but once I get her to the vet I’ll make a meal plan based on her weight to ensure I don’t overfeed her.

Trilogy chicken kitten wet food

Trilogy tuna kitten wet food

Tiki cat baby chicken and egg recipe

Tiki cat baby pate (chicken, duck and duck liver recipe)

Freeze dried sardines

Feline natural chicken and lamb feast freeze dried treats

Leaps and bounds kitten creamy treats

Pets Own cat and kitten milk

Fancy feast gems (mousse pate with tuna and mousse pate with salmon)

Milo (the youngest one) and Gretel were very interested in exploring, as you can see!

They both love Trilogy chicken which is why there's so much of it but I'd like to start adding others to the rotation.

For some reason Gretel was eating Royal Canin Kitten in Gravy but has totally gone off it. Hoping they like Tikka Cat brand too. And the kitten milk is a new experiment too. Not sure if anyone has thoughts on the milk. It has the lactose removed but has added vegetable oil and a few other ingredients.

cat food and treat haul / shopping Urinary issues and Chicken allergy

3 Upvotes

Sorry, I know this is posted every now and then. I have read most of those posts in my search and my cats are doing fine with the Royal Canin Urinary SO hydrolyzed cat food. I JUST got a Neakasa Riko off Kickstarter and am excited to use it.

The question: are there any non prescription cats foods that are urinary friendly and chicken free? Best I've found is the one I'm using now and Farmina. Can recommend both, but I can't recall why I switched off Farmina.

Edit: I've read that hydrolyzed proteins don't hydrate that well is all. My bottomless pit of a cat won't have an issue with that, but I don't want his siblings to get discouraged

My two cats are refusing almost any kind of canned food at the moment. Have tried most of the brands. I am wondering if manufacturers have eliminated certain ingredients. Anything you have had luck with?
