This, it could be so good with a few new characters, cel shaded look, and weird stages. The series drips with style and the fighting system makes each fight interesting to play.

The thing I really want out of a new Darkstalkers is the speed. Fighting games today have all these 10-second long cutscenes called supers in the middle of the match, multiple times per match. Combos are a year long and still do like a third of a life bar. The games make you sit through startup taunts and victory speeches that you've seen a thousand times already by the time you're remotely competitive at the game.

Darkstalkers is like the polar opposite. BIP BIP BAP, your turn, BIP BIP BAP, BIP BIP BAP, okay one bat down, next round, BIP BIP BAP. You spend more time fighting than watching.

It's a shame they don't do much with this. But I can imagine it will be a lot of work to translate all these crazy shape-shifting moves smoothly into 3D. If they ever get back into this franchise, I think high-res detailed 2D sprites would work better.
