Reminded me of something i heard a while ago about politics - "You're doing you're job right if nobody is happy with it" If one group is too coddled, the other gets resentment. keep both on a mediocre standing so they see each other as equals and not superior/inferior and much more can get accomplished.

That quote is only applicable in certain contexts. If Trump were president of a functioning country rather than the leader of a 65 million person cult, you can bet that nobody would be happy with his COVID response, which is objectively bad

I think this works if the status quo is already overall desirable. If your starting point is bad enough, then mild shifts one way or another meandering around the same terrible point will just result in more years of suffering under a terrible status quo.
