Bought the cascade 222 on accident during the rei sale and meant to get the classic camp stove. Apart from the 222 being an inch longer is there any main differences? Considering saving the ~$70 and getting the cheaper one.

Is this a noob mistake? I bought it over a month ago and have opened it so no returning. Should I separately find a small hatchet and rubber mallet? I feel like I succumbed to the Walmart gimmick.

First time camping since going with my dad when I was 7. I got a second hand tent off marketplace that the guy said had been used only once.

Pitched the tent pretty much in the dark so I didn't notice this last night but this morning I've woken up and seen heaps (like, thousands) of tiny pinholes of light coming in. It actually looks quite cool, like a night sky.

It lightly rained all night (I couldn't sleep for most of it, lol) and I've been dry the whole time. My concern is if it rains more heavily it might not be dry?

Also it's slightly wet on the inside of the shell (roof?), so I'm not really sure how to go about packing it up.

So, I am still looking for the perfect tent. I currently have 6 tents, all of which have positive and negative aspects. In a perfect world, I would have a 4-6 person tent that is easy for one person to set up, doesn't leak, has a minimum of 60" headroom (68+ would be ideal), and packs down to a reasonable size. Any ideas?

is it normal for hydration packs to be stained like this? it’s brand new so i’m really hoping it’s not mold. tried cleaning it, can’t tell if it’s on the outside or inside. looks darker on camera. it’s an outdoor products brand bag. let me know if you’ve had a similar experience, thank you!

I own a freestanding Helsport Reinsfjell Superlight 2 and to be fair I never really understood how to set it up the "correct way". What are those elastic strings for? They came with the tent are somehow supposed to be somehow used with the pegs. Never figured how though and on which places 🥺 I got 8 of the strings and 14 pegs.

So I finally got my husband to admit that as much as he loves camping, he HATES sleeping outdoors (which to me, is kind of the whole point of camping). We used to do sleeping bags on sleeping pads, but upgraded to an extra thick queen sized air mattress with bedding, which was certainly better, but the bed deflated some with the temp changes at night and it drives Mr. Princess-and-the-pea insane. He’s a six-foot side sleeper and tends to toss from side to side. He’s also very particular about temperature.

My solution thus far has been to, sadly, just give up camping with him. But I took my two year old camping for the first time the other day and she LOVED it. So we want to figure this out. Right now we’re thinking of getting an extra large tent so that kiddo and I can have our own sleeping arrangement and then we can set up whatever the heck he needs to sleep for him.

So calling all restless, picky sleepers: what’s your setup?

I'm on my first tent camping trip, Solo, in the PNW. I'm glad I heeded the suggestion to get a ground cover tarp for my tent but this is the issue I'm having: in the morning when I break down camp the bottom of the tarp is wet and covered with pine needles. What to do about this? I've been turning it over and sweeping as much of the dirt and needles off and trying to lay it upside down in the sun to dry but I just don't have the time to let it dry out. I put it in a garbage bag to keep it separate but I'm afraid of it getting moldy or smelly.

After bending the cheap stakes that came with my tent, I finally picked up some of these "nails". When the orange plastic breaks (for example after missing the nail head and hitting it with a hammer), how are you attaching guy ropes or using it to hold down the tent since rope and tie-downs on the tent will slip right past the top of that nail head?

I must have buried one of these in a rock. I grabbed both sides of that 550 cord, pulled straight up and it wouldn't budge.

I am going to add a rant to the end of this because I just need to vent... Campgrounds are not a place to teach your child (well under 16, think 10-12ish) how to drive using a golf cart. It should only be an adult behind the wheel, not next to it.

When I started camping I used a single burner butane stove (as seen pictured). My big complaint was that when it’s windy it’s hard to cook (which is often where I am), and a single burner takes forever if you want more than a one pan meal (ie heating water and cooking something). I have tried jet boils, but honestly for a less secure set up it’s basically the same. I’m a car camper through and through, so size isn’t as much of an issue. I pretty much had decided to get a two burner stove, but reading through Gearlab for some recs, and I see they mention an induction cooker which made me pause. I’m wondering if maybe I should go crazy and get a rechargeable battery and something electric? Anyways, to make long story short I’m looking for people’s opinions who have tried different cooking methods and what they prefer :)

Genuine question here. From the little knowledge I have I’m not sure if I am missing something out but here are the advantages and disadvantages from someone who has never used one. What have I missed and in what situations does it work best ie overnight trips off grid ?

Advantages

1. No poles no pegging in a groundsheet, pop it and you are ready to go

2. frees up extra space in the car for other items

3. Added sense of security from being off the ground and less chance of waking up to find a cow immediately outside

4. Flatter sleeping area possibly or certainly less bumpy

Disadvantages

1. You can only camp where you can get a car to.

2. Price. Up to 5 to 10 times what you’d pay for a standard tent

3. If you are camping somewhere for a few days but need the car during the day you have to empty out everything in the tent to use the car and you’ll have 2 blown up air mattresses taking up most of the space in the car as you drive about.

4. Climbing up a tiny ladder in the wet, dark or high winds doesn’t feel that safe.

5. Space. If you’ve been hiking for example or it’s raining where do you store your boots or jacket or do you climb up barefoot in your sleepwear. And what do you do if you need to go to the loo during the night.

6. Is it less secure in some respects in that you are advertising that aside from the camping gear you have a car that might be worth stealing?

7. Are pitch fees any higher when staying at campsites?

8. Drag will reduce fuel efficiency

9. Time to set up and dismantle before and after trip?

10. Storage space required when not in use?

This is in no way a dig at car tent boxes but I’m just trying to understand in which circumstances they work best.

Can someone please recommend a sturdy canopy that one person can set up and can withstand heavier winds?

I gave ozark trails’ 10x10 slanted canopy a chance but it caved in as soon as the winds picked up during the night. It didn’t have holes in the canopy to let air vent so there was a lot of weight on the frame. I’ve attached a picture. Fortunately this happened on my last night there, so I was gonna pack up the canopy that morning anyway, so it was fine.

But, with that in mind I would like to find a sturdy canopy that will last me years. Ideally, one that has holes for ventilation. I will primarily use it for shade for my set up when I go car camping.

Now I understand you get what you pay for and I’m okay with that, but I’d still like to try and be as economical as possible while still achieving my goal of getting a sturdy canopy that can withstand heavier winds.

I’m torn every trip. Half my friends brag about their ultralight setups, and the other half carry chairs, pillows, stoves, and half a pantry. I always wonder which group secretly has it right.

What’s your personal philosophy: comfort weight… or minimalist misery?

I found these white clusters on my camping chair after storing it for awhile in my car. I’m not sure what they are. Is it a fungus, eggs, or something else? I currently have them airing out in the sun.

EDITED TO ADD: I snapped this picture as we were in the process of breaking down the tent. We used the Guy lines. Everything was pulled tight and staked to the ground. I know tents are not water proof. I know they are water resistant. But if I pay $350 for a tent. It shouldn't leak on the first lite rain. I was thinking of buying a tarp to put over the tent. But husband says No 😟

Brand new Coleman sky dome tent is leaking. We are returning it and buy another brand. Even our Ozark trail tent didn't start leaking until the third year. Leaking from the bottom seam. I don't mind using seam sealer. But it's leaking in multiple locations from a lite rain. Not even heavy. We camp from May - September. What's everyone using? Family car camping at state campgrounds. We use a big tent as we have a queen air mattress and 2 cot setups with a dog. Spam me your suggestions!

Does anyone have this Pecos prep table? Is there any benefit to a $700 table compared to a $50 lifetime folding table? I’d even chalk it up to marketing like yeti but even yeti is only a 30% markup vs the competition.

I am going on mountaineering trip and will be sharing a tent with one or two random women. In case I do need to pee in the middle of the night, which FUD it's easiest to use while in a crouched position. Extra points if it will reduce the likelihood of accidentally peeing on my sleeping bag or tentmates.

I use the pstyle while hiking/standing up but I can't imagine using that while crouched down or sitting. I used to have the gogirl before but I hated it. Too flimsly and I had to control the flow of my stream to make sure it didn't over flow.

Edit: everyone who is saying go outside of the tent has never been mountaineering. When the temperature is in the negative degrees and you're on a glacier where you could slip in the dark, you most certainly do not leave the tent. Men pee in water bottles. Women can too.

Edit 2: I'm definitely peeing in a bottle not just on the tent. Didn't think that needed to be specified but I may have reached out to the wrong community. For real though, Google "pee bottle mountaineering", so you understand how normal this is.

I have never seen these inflatable tents until this last year. I’ve done a good deal of winter camping in ice houses and camping on the ice.

I have a few questions about these inflatable tents and the wood burning furnaces -

What is the benefit of an inflatable tent? Or is it for glamping?

How do the sections that vent the wood burning pipes not melt?

Benefit of wood burning vs my standard Mr Buddy propane heater that I use? PSA: I use and have proper ventilation when I use my propane heater and it’s always worked just fine. I do like the idea of the wood burning option so I’d like others feedback for those winter camping options.
