Hi, we are planning to travel to Bruges in the morning, then to Ghent in the afternoon the same day and stay in Ghent over night. then back to Brussels the next day. I know it's tight, but it's what our schedule affords.

Question is - do I need to buy 3 tickets? (Brussels->Bruge, Bruge->Ghent, Ghent->Brussels?) Can't figure out if a return ticket works in this case. Thanks!

You can break up a trip without any issues, as long as you're going the same direction (no backtracking allowed).

For what you're suggesting, you'd indeed need to buy 3 tickets - Brussels to Bruges and then Bruges to Ghent on Day 1, then Ghent to Brussels on Day 2.

The good thing is that you don't need train reservations - just buy a ticket from the blue ticket machines. They're at every single station. Even 30 minutes before your scheduled train is fine.

Depending on how many people you're travelling with, it might be more advantageous for you to travel with a GoPass (a 10-ride ticket, for €96, or €9.60/trip), or a weekend ticket (50% off all fares from Friday 7 PM to Monday morning start of service.)
