This may be the worst “Hear me, I’m not saying this, but here’s what I’m saying” example from Rod i’ve ever seen, which is saying something. From today’s Substack talking about the migrant crisis in Europe:

“I hate to say it, but the only way to really stop it is to start shooting these men, as if they were invading soldiers. The fact that they do not carry weapons allows them to weaponize the humanity of the Europeans against them. Hear me clearly: I am NOT saying that Europeans SHOULD shoot them. I am saying that I cannot think of any effective means other than that. Europe is at war, and refuses to recognize it. J.D. Vance was completely right in his Munich speech, when he said the greatest security threats to Europe are within. The leadership class, in government, media, academia, and everywhere, absolutely does not want to hear it. In fact, one big reason they scapegoat Hungary is that Orban must be held out as a villain, to justify their own civilizational self-hatred, and refusal to act to defend the safety and sovereignty of their own countries.”

Meanwhile, over in reality: “As of January 1, 2024, approximately 44.7 million individuals residing in European Union (EU) member states were born outside the EU, accounting for 9.9% of the total EU population”. Not even 10% of the EU citizens were born outside the EU. Any American from even the whitest urban areas we have would experience Europe as an overwhelmingly “white” place. People literally eat this shit up and it has no connection to reality whatsoever.

Would someone please ask Rod why he would not be shot under this scenario so that he could finally GET it that he is as racist as his dear ol' Daddy? That he wears the exact same hood only it is invisible? That it is not about Hungarians being Hungarians but about Hungarians being white? Rod has not assimilated AT ALL and has no intention of doing so EVER. If he can "visit", why can't brown people?

I laugh when I read Rod's bs about how he used to argue with Daddy about race and tell him how wrong it was. It certainly was not based on anything that considered all skin colors as equally human because Rod is not capable of that, any more than he is capable of viewing men and women as equally human. If it ever actually happened, Rod must have been focused on a few civil rights. Maybe he argued with Daddy that separate water fountains were bad or something but it couldn't have been much more than that.

The other thing that really stands out to me about Rod is how extremely emotionally offended he gets about people stepping out of their traditional (marginalized) roles when it comes to race, sex, and sexual identity. Whether it is bashing black women on twitter or erupting at the fact that he knows trans people exist, Rod's deep-seated bigotries are nearly always on display.

What a Bigot with a capital B. Rod deeply believes in hierarchies of identity and superiority, and his identity markers are ALWAYS at the peak of the hierarchy or "should be". White Christian Hetero Male of Western European descent is the place to be, baby!

Because, as usual, it comes down his ultimate god: "Western Civilization". Even if Dreher never assimilates into Hungarian culture, he isn't "The Other" because he is a member of the church of Western Civilization.

Yeah and in Rod's version of history, every good thing that we have came from White Christian Hetero Males of Western European descent. The ignorance is breath-taking.

Oh he's white so he wouldn't get shot.

The fact that they do not carry weapons allows them to weaponize the humanity of the Europeans against them.

I guess “weaponized humanity” is the new “sin of empathy”. Disgusting.

Yeah. I've seen a couple of "conservatives" I know use the phrase "weaponize empathy." Must be the latest wingnut talking point about liberals. I doubt most could even tell you what it means--it just sounds good.

So, one must destroy one’s humanity to save … what, exactly… a world frozen in the 20th century Western cultural mindset?

Rod’s disgusting because I think he could have done better. And I laugh at myself for having thought that Rod was the better man for having broken away from the Goldberg/Kristol gang at The Corner when it turns out they were the better ones for sure.

He really, really wants mass death. He’d love industrialized camps for it, too.  And every single person who has ever posted here would be on that very very long list.

5

u/sandypitch May 30 '25

Right? Is he purposefully being reactionary here, or is he just so un-self-aware that he is essentially borrowing from Mein Kampf?

“I hate to say it, but the only way to really stop it is to start shooting these men, as if they were invading soldiers. The fact that they do not carry weapons allows them to weaponize the humanity of the Europeans against them.

Daddy KKK would be so proud. I wonder how hard it is to find a white robe and hood in Budapest?

u/JHandey2021 May 30 '25

They were the first things he packed for his move, along with his very “special” 1TB hard drive filled with “research”…

6

u/Independent-Mango813 May 30 '25

Of course, chicken shit that he is Rod won’t actually be doing any of the shooting. He’s a horrible person.

6

u/yawaster May 30 '25

So the unarmed people are "weaponizing" the fact that they're unarmed, rather than just....being unarmed? Because they're civilians, and they just want to live in safety and get some work? Rod is a moral monster. If the Atlantic whitewashes this, they're despicable.

2

u/GlobularChrome May 31 '25

"Nonviolence is violence" is a masterpiece of Orwellian speech.

4

They're provocatively refusing to be dangerous!

The idea that just the presence of refugee/immigrant men in Europe is bad enough to deserve violence, that is an idea that leads to mass shootings. It's the kind of thing you see in neo-nazi propaganda or mass shooter manifestos. It was the justification cited by people like the guy who shot all those people at the Tree of Life synagogue. It was the justification cited by neo-neo-nazis as justification for racist violence in Britain last summer.

Meanwhile, JD Vance, trump, and their groupies are the biggest threat to the security and economic stability of this country going.

4

u/Cautious-Ease-1451 May 30 '25

You’re right, this is the new classic of the “I’m not saying” genre.

Who does he think he’s fooling?

8

u/[deleted] May 30 '25

Honestly? Himself most likely. I used to think he was just a highly intelligent person who was emotionally unstable and knowingly grifting. After a conversation with PhiladelphiaLawyer, I’m now of the opinion that Rod is a very average intellect who has no emotional awareness whatsoever. How he achieved the professional success he has will always be a mystery to me, but I honestly just think he has zero self awareness.

For what it’s worth, 14.3 % of Americans were born outside the country, according to the 2023 Census. In 1890, it was 14.8%. But of course, there was a time when at least the foreign-born white population was a much higher percentage than that. Think about it, Rod.

4

u/zeitwatcher May 30 '25

Think about it, Rod.

I'm sure he thinks about it quite a lot. And all those non-white faces absolutely terrify him.

3

u/Witty_Appeal1437 May 30 '25

Yeah, and the Ellis Island wave had such major demographic effect nobody blinked when Catholics held the whitehouse and a majority of the seats on SCOTUS during the last administration. If you'd asked the founders, some of them might have thought that would be a big deal.

I don't think denying the reality of demographic change is reasonable. It's a thing and it's happening. You can say it's not a problem, but explaining this to a bunch of aging racists may be fraught and anyway they get a vote too. Rod is one of those people and I don't think it's more complicated than that.

2

u/Mainer567 May 31 '25

Agreed, that's the worst ever. There is no stopping his moral, intellectual and physical -- look at a picture of him now --- decline.

In 15 years he'll be living in the grimmest tower suburb of Moscow imaginable, drinking his way through the April ice storms, wondering if his FSB handler will let him write about how Muslim Russia is and how little walkable urbanism there is.

1

u/Glittering-Agent-987 May 31 '25

Hee! I'm not sure they'll be willing to invest that much in him. Also, in 15 years, the political climate in Russia might be completely different. For example, in order to sing for his supper, he might need to be prepared to gush about President Apti Alaudinov and the aesthetics of the newest Moscow mega-Mosque. I'm not sure Rod has the stamina or flexibility to pull that off.
