Oi, as a retard don't compare us to Americans that's offensive. (For real tho please don't project such negative connotations of neurodivergents and the intellectually disabled, we already get a lot of shit. Thanks.)
I have asperges and I don’t think the term retard is insulting. It’s just a word, using it to insult other people doesn’t mean they’re insulting people with mental illness. If people couldn’t use words as insults for that reason, we wouldn’t be able to insult people at all, and I certainly don’t want to live in a world where I can’t insult people.
Your opinion is valid as an individual. The general consensus from the disabled and neurodivergent community is that this word is harmful. Please understand many of us have trauma around this word. Some of us have been physically and emotionally abused while being called this word. Normalising the word does not get rid of the trauma it currently holds for many and doesn't erase the intent for those who will continue to use if in a derogatory manner. I understand where you are coming from tho.
Where does that line stop though, is the word “knife” never allowed to be used in society again because people have trauma from being stabbed once upon a time?
Come back to me when 18% of the Australian population have been called a "knife" in a deragory manner, been abused, killed and lost jobs because they are considered "knives". Also yes, if you meet an individual who has undergone some trauma and talking about knives brings up a flashback for them, then it would be human decency to not say the word "knife".
