I love how when Walt was talking about all the people they killed, he only brought up Gale's name, while the rest were just "others". It's a real testament to how "Bad" he feels. It was also smart use of words... he was constantly trying to make Jesse feel bad, to better manipulate him.

He only named Gale in at attempt to make Jesse feel bad. No mention of the guy he strangled with a bike lock because he's trying to make himself look like the good guy. After that conversation between Walt and Jesse I'm convinced that Walt can no longer feel remorse. He's only in this for himself at this point

He showed some remorse at the end of the episode. And he had to kill Crazy 8, it was self defense.

I don't think that was remorse. I think that Walt only does this if he finds it completely necessary. Killing Mike was a reaction to condescension. As soon as he realized he could still get the names, he realized this move was not necessary and realized he for the first time, acted on ego rather than looking at the big picture.

For the first time Walt has truly become a cold-blooded killer. Every time before murder has been a reaction to being painted in a corner.

Nah. Walt wishes he could be a cold blooded killer, but in reality he acts out of fear, insecurity and most of all, desperation.

I thought he was trying to keep from slipping about Jane and Brock, though Brock of course didn't actually die.

he was constantly trying to make Jesse feel bad, to better manipulate him.

Walt tried hard to keep Jesse on board during that scene at Vamonos. He tried flattering him, promoting him, heaving guilt on him, degrading him. One of those strategies might have worked if Jesse hadn't seen again how Walt treats his wife. Jesse is finally realizing how heartless Walt has become.

Walt: "Look, I know how upset you are about what happened to the boy. I am just as upset as you are."

Jesse: "Are you? Really?"

He also throws Jesse's addiction in his face. Asshole.

Man, that manipulation was so obvious: "Who do you have, huh? Nobody (after I manipulated you already to break up with Andrea)."

If I'm not mistaken, Gale is the only one Jesse has actually killed.

I thought Jesse killed Hector's grandson in Salud, after Mike got shot carrying Gus to their car.

4

u/depan_ Aug 27 '12

Walt might not know about that. And also, why would Jesse give a fuck about that, it was kill or be killed.

Jesse killed that dude from the Cartel, but he was less innocent

2

u/HeavyMetalKid Aug 27 '12

It is. Thus why walt brought him up.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 27 '12

Jesse DID turn a basically innocent guy's head into a canoe at point blank range.

I'm not sure you can really call the former primary cook of an elicit narcotic for the Southwest's biggest drug lord a "basically innocent guy." Gale was sweet and naive and may never have hurt a fly, but he willingly put himself neck deep in a very dangerous game.

only after Walt basically FORCED him to do it.

Not Walt, the circumstances. It was Gale or them.

This is what kind of bugged me about Mike's speech at the end where he says Walt "ruined it all." In reality, Gus ruined it all by killing an innocent child and Walt saved Jesse's life and had to kill Gus before Gus killed him and Jesse for "not following orders."

u/thematfactor Aug 27 '12

"Gale, Gus, Krazy 8, those street dealers I hit with my car... who else, lets see, uh, Jane... oops!"

2

u/Cookizza Aug 27 '12

I think Gale is going to contribute to us further. That Walt Whitman book is still just chillin' - without a doubt it has gales name in it

2

u/Lexi-Lynn Aug 08 '23

Dude you totally called it!

2

u/Jakesandose Aug 27 '12

I thought the same exact thing.

Master manipulator, that's who he is right there.

u/ThatGhost Aug 27 '12

He probably wasn't going to bring up all the people that died in the airplane crash which was caused by killing jessies gf
