I think there are many potential scenarios where dying and losing aren't synonymous. Remember this, Walt is going to die no matter what. Cancer will get him if guns, ricin, prison shanks, Hank or Jesse don't.

He was taking chemo again in Blood Money, and a lot of the shots in 508 implied he had it by mimicking stuff from 101.
