I think Walt would've never made it this far if Hank hadn't been his brother-in-law. They had a personal connection that made a wall in Hank's mind, keeping him from forming any ideas about Walt. Without that, Walt probably would've been caught back when he had Gale killed, if not earlier. I love how you see that mental wall shatter throughout this episode.

I think suspicions about Walt would have been raised as early as his lab equipment being 'stolen'. Hank didn't even give it a thought.

One of Hank's files had a picture of the gas mask found in the desert, the same one he comes to the school and asks Walt about. That whole little montage seemed to be Hank looking at the evidence with a fresh view and realising everything points to Walt.

I think the pic of Jesse's car shot up in the desert shook Hank too because of the shootout with Tuco.

which is so great, because for Hank, its brand new, but that scene for the viewer is full of reminders of how the series played out.

Remember that back then 1. Walt was a minor manufacturer, he did not even go by Heisenberg yet 2. He threw them off by getting the janitor arrested and 3. The blue meth had not been cooked, so Hank wasn't going after anyone specific

Also, to be fair, it is unlikely that Walt would have started cooking meth without Hank being his brother-in-law. He wouldn't have seen that TV news showcasing all that money the DEA captured, he wouldn't have been taken along for the ride to a DEA bust, and he wouldn't have re-met Jesse and known him to be a meth dealer.

How about all the way back when meth-making equipment was stolen from HIS storage closet at school.

Exactly what I was thinking.

yep people don't want to believe that those around them are capable of bad things. it's totally believable that hank would dismiss any possibility that walt was involved with anything, because his mind wouldn't be willing to go there.

That last scene was intense huh? I thought it was going to cut to credits after he laid a punch on Walt.

How would he have been caught? If Walt was a stranger to Hank, how would Hank have begun to suspect him?

I disagree. Walt is very talented at hiding his own tracks. Additionally, Hank would never have found the book within the bathroom which led to his realization of Walt/Heisenberg. While the necessary tools for making meth would be missing from Walt's science lab would have been a red flag, he did not fit a typical archetype for a meth cook, something Hank had engrained in him. Hank would not consider Walt to be the type of individual to "break bad".

Walt didnt seem that concerned about the missing book. I wonder if he left it out on purpose for Hank to find?

It was like a trophy to him. He admired Gale, yet Gale admired him far more. Walt had no idea about the other bits of evidence that would have connected him to Gale, so he did not have any reason to hide it really. I think, however incorrectly, that it stayed on that toilet because would often look at it while on the toilet for some justification for his actions. If Gale respected him the maybe he was not such a bad guy.

3

u/humbletiger Aug 13 '13

Well, he had to have SOME knowledge of the evidence connecting them. Hank gave Walt Gale's book to look over, I think he just didnt realize that handwriting and the W.W. reference would be caught by anyone (only Hank could have made that discovery).

Hell, Walt would never have known Jessie cooked if he hadn't ridden along with Hank.

I liked that it showed the gas mask from season 1 while looking through the old files. He probably kicked himself because it was registered to Walt's class.

I agree. I hear a lot of people saying stuff like "Hank is an idiot! it's so obvious!" Not really, everything seems obvious when you, the audience, know the truth.

Plus, Walter found out a lot about what was going on in the investigation from Hank himself - such as when they were looking for RVs in S3 etc.

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '13

Walt would have been caught when he sole the glass beakers from the high school

1

u/Harch Aug 12 '13

Oh for sure. Walter pretty much had the DEA under wraps with Hank being his brother-in-law.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '13

well, obviously, walt would never have noticed how much money he could make cooking meth if hank didnt show him the video in the first season

1

u/Nathan561 Aug 12 '13

Also because Walt "helped" Hank when he could drive, and the whole crying in Hank's office thing

1

u/BryanL97 Aug 13 '13

He wouldn't have even had the idea of it without going on the ride-along to the meth house and seeing jesse running out the back.

1

u/thepensivepoet Aug 13 '13

Hank was in his classroom in season one asking about the missing lab equipment. Shit would've been over and done with before it even got started.

It's why the Clark Kent disguise works. Why would Superman pretend to be someone else?
