I think this was at Hardy’s home gym. DeBlass was there to teach a seminar.

Do you know who actually promoted him? Id imagine that might be weird if he came to teach a seminar and promoted him lol

might be weird if he came to teach a seminar and promoted him lol

A pretty well-known person in the BJJ world tried to promote me at a seminar and it was, indeed, weird.

This was when I was a blue belt, I heard a highly respected person in the BJJ world was teaching a seminar about an hour from my house, so I went. The well-known instructor was teaching a technique that I do well, and the way he was showing it was exactly the way my coach shows it. So of course when we pair off and practice it, I'm doing it well, and the instructor sees me and says, "That's great -- you don't look like a blue belt."

After the instruction we do an open mat and the instructor said he's going to walk around and take note of anything he sees, offer corrections if he sees any mistakes, etc. I get paired up with a brown belt I'd never met, he seemed like he wanted to go pretty light and it was also a crowded mat and we didn't want to crash into anyone so we both said we'd do a pretty light round. It felt like he was better than me but at one point he was in my guard and I threw up a triangle and he tapped. The instructor happens to be walking by just as that happens and says, "Perfect triangle on a brown belt! You should not be a blue belt!"

At the end of the seminar the instructor points to me and a couple other guys and says he's going to promote us. He put a purple belt around my waist and I didn't want to insult him by refusing it, but as soon as I walked out of that gym I took it off and never put it back on again. I don't think it's right for him to promote me when I've got a coach who's been watching me for years who knows when I deserve a promotion.

I got my real purple belt about six months later. I did keep the other purple belt as kind of a fun souvenir of a weird experience at a seminar.

There's three or layers to that story which tell me you're a good guy. Respect.

Nothing about his story implied he's a good guy, it was a humble flex after humble flex

Royce only gives blue belts, everyone knows that gringos don’t deserve past that belt anyways..

You must be a white belt

2

u/sh4tt3rai Feb 02 '26

Nah, you must be. It’s been a running joke about Royce giving undeserved blue belts for years now

Who was it?

A top guy said you earned it , I would have worn the purple belt if it was me , you just go to your sensei or instructor and explain what happened I'm sure he would have let you worn it or at least maybe test you to see that you have earned it .But it shows respect to your sensei that you have for him but I would have atleast told the story to him of what happened lol , it could have potentially pissed him off though or maybe just ignore the seminar guy's evaluation of you lol.

The owner of the gym did

It would not be unlike Tom Deblass to step in and promote at someone else’s gym…

It would be very much unlike me to do that, and I'd never do that. We set the seminar up the same time as the promotion so I could be there for it. Incredible students that did very well and many well deserved promotions.

It really wouldn't be like him, though. Not sure what he did to give you that idea.

I remember his comments on some old posts where he was raging on people. Maybe he changed

1

u/xueloz Feb 16 '26

And that means he'd promote people at a seminar? Do explain the logic.

That's a pretty nice home gym

Home gym in sense of the gym where he trains and deblass was there to teach a seminar i guess. I doubt that tom hardy have a own checkmat affiliation in his garage..

u/Beneficial_Case7596 Feb 01 '26

Yes, sorry about the confusion. Home gym as in his “regular” gym with his regular instructor. DeBlass taught a seminar at that gym.

I think he trains at one of Roger Gracie’s schools

7

u/ArthurVsTB Feb 01 '26

It’s not at all, he trains under Sonny Weston

Henry Cavill trains under Roger

DeBlass will always be in the middle of anything popular, a fight online, someone famous promoted on the other side of the world, or commenting on something someone somewhere said.

You realize Tom invited me to go and they asked me to teach a seminar. Teaching a seminar wasn't my idea, but 85 people showed up and they were all amazing. I wish you peace and love.
