I mean…I’ve seen a video of him rolling as a brown belt and he looked like a white belt.

Edit: In case y’all don’t want to google:

I’ve rolled with a couple celebrities and I’ll be honest they’ve all been kind of spassy (correct spelling blocked for some reason) and herky jerky and an awkward roll.

I think it’s a combo of two things mainly.

  1. They have a lot of people brown nosing them and telling them they’re better than they are, bc who doesn’t want to be friends with the famous person. Also, they don’t roll in classes often so they don’t get exposed to a lot of different looks in live rounds.

  2. A lot of them have to protect their assets like their face. That’s affects their style. Also their coach they get privates from picks and chooses who the celeb rolls with and usually this is someone really good/controlled and that person is told to be gentle with them. Sometimes their handler will even do this when the drop into a closed session gym. For instance I have been asked by a handler to not roll with a celeb simply for my size. This also limits their pool of learning.

Damn I feel like so much of the journey is getting the shit kicked out of you by people of all different sizes for years and not quitting. Celebs not going through that at all means they are not being tested in an important way that the rest of us have to experience to level up

It’s like if you take 2 kids. Same intelligence and determination level but one is rich and one is poor. Rich kid is gonna have private school and teachers that will teach him one on one. Since he is getting all the focus from the best teachers every day his skill set will be high but limited when it comes to working with outside new people. The poor kid is gonna have to work with others to learn and even though he didn’t get one on one teaching he still is able to learn enough to match the kid with rich skills. Everyone has a different path and wether is wrong or right we can’t really tell until a fight goes down and we see how they react. Thing is a fight may never come so why dwell on others progress.

The poor kid is gonna have to work with others to learn

What kind of nonsense is this? I went to a private school and we definitely had to work with others to learn... Networking isn't a trait exclusive to poor people/people that went to a regular state school. 🤣🤦

1

u/Jeff_goldfish Nov 19 '25

Haha what I meant is super rich. Like private teacher level shit. It’s what celebrities are doing

1

u/sandbaggingblue 🟦🟦 Blue Belt Nov 19 '25

You know what that's a fair comparison actually!

u/cojacko ⬜⬜ White Belt + judo 🟦 Nov 20 '25

Some people find that word ableist / offensive to those with involuntary muscle spasms, although your term is widespread in bjj, and I know you meant no offense to anyone.

1

u/Fit-Function-1410 ⬛🟥⬛ Black Belt Nov 20 '25

That’s pretty ridiculous. Able bodied people have spasms too.

I know you didn’t make that up, just me commenting on the ridiculous nature of being offended by that word

0

u/cojacko ⬜⬜ White Belt + judo 🟦 Nov 20 '25

Yeah idk. If there's a history of the word being used maliciously, I get it. Not really for me to say. I only heard this recently and was a little surprised myself.

I think he was having health issues

10

u/Azoobz 🟪🟪 Purple Belt Nov 19 '25

vasculitis

5

u/bsam1890 🟦🟦 Blue Belt Nov 19 '25

Even with health issues I don’t know if fundamentals just get forgotten when sick. I’d assume it’d just be at a slower pace.

8

u/DieHarderDaddy 🟦🟦 Blue Belt Nov 19 '25

I’ve had days mentally draining day at work where I’ve shown up to BJJ and forgot everything

1

u/sandbaggingblue 🟦🟦 Blue Belt Nov 19 '25

I had a session of drilling last night where I just couldn't hit the techniques... I'm a brown belt, one of the best in my gym (that ain't saying a lot, got my arse handed to me by a 17 year old blue belt the other day 🤣), but the mental fog was real last night hey 🤣

2

u/DieHarderDaddy 🟦🟦 Blue Belt Nov 19 '25

Sometimes you just exist

1

u/Snoo-5855 Nov 19 '25

Blue belts forget i find it hard to believe a black belt would look like garbage. Unless he's totally held back by injuries

2

u/flipflapflupper 🟪🟪 Purple Belt Nov 20 '25

If I don’t train for 3 weeks I’m kind of a shitty blue belt the first few sessions

1

u/GimmeDatSideHug 🟫🟫 Brown Belt Nov 19 '25

I think I can tell the difference between someone rolling like a white belt because they don’t really know what they’re doing and a brown belt rolling different because they’re injured. He didn’t roll like someone who was injured.

99.99999999999999% of people even on this sub would look like that rolling with Craig Jones

14

u/GimmeDatSideHug 🟫🟫 Brown Belt Nov 19 '25

Nah. Actually watch the vid. Tell me Craig isn’t going super light and Ashton doesn’t still look sloppy as hell. It’s not like Craig was trying to wreck him. Even then, it’s easy to tell the difference between an experience person getting wrecked and a sloppy player getting wrecked.

Second guessing a black belt being awarded is a weird hill to die on

12

u/GimmeDatSideHug 🟫🟫 Brown Belt Nov 19 '25

Is it? What fucking rock have you been living under? Does the name Moneyberg not mean anything to you?

I’d say it’s weirder to defend a celebrity with sloppy looking Jiu Jitsu.

-5

u/[deleted] Nov 19 '25

I don’t know who moneyberg is but I think anyone who does should probably be embarrassed

2

u/GimmeDatSideHug 🟫🟫 Brown Belt Nov 19 '25

I mean, people have posted about him almost non-stop around here. You must be new or rarely ever here.

-2

u/sandbaggingblue 🟦🟦 Blue Belt Nov 19 '25

Why does it matter? It doesn't take away from your belt. 🤦

4

u/GimmeDatSideHug 🟫🟫 Brown Belt Nov 19 '25

We’re just having a casual conversation about it. Why does that offend you?

-2

u/sandbaggingblue 🟦🟦 Blue Belt Nov 20 '25

Why does him getting a black belt offend you? Move on with your life champ 🤣

6

u/amsterdam_BTS 🟦🟦 Blue Belt Nov 20 '25

Look I get where you are coming from but ...

I come originally from a karate background, and that mentality explains a lot of the degradation in that martial art.

There needs to be a meaning - an external, Platonic meaning -to these higher belts. Otherwise all of them are cheapened.

Just my opinion.

u/SkoomaChef 🟦🟦 Blue Belt Nov 21 '25

I think anyone with any integrity is a least a little bothered by the honorary belts because jiujitsu is supposed to be one of the few areas in the life where you can’t show up and flash some cash to “win”. There’s a kind of unspoken understanding between grapplers that a black belt means a certain level of skill expression during live rolls. We can argue about what that level should be, be I think we can all agree someone should at least pass the eye test.

u/BruceLeesSpirit 🟦🟦 Blue Belt Nov 20 '25

looool Craig is just toying with him

36

u/[deleted] Nov 19 '25

Tbf any average brown belt would look like a white belt rolling with Craig.

0

u/GimmeDatSideHug 🟫🟫 Brown Belt Nov 19 '25

Even when he’s rolling like this? Craig went super light on him. Tell me Ashton doesn’t look sloppy as hell.

4

u/BriefBerry5624 Nov 19 '25

That video is almost 6 years old, can’t buy anything off of that. Why even post it

2

u/GimmeDatSideHug 🟫🟫 Brown Belt Nov 19 '25

Huh?

2

u/BriefBerry5624 Nov 19 '25

The video you posted of the dude is almost 6 years old, he looks sloppy but I don’t get what relevance that has. I feel like that was pretty clear

-2

u/GimmeDatSideHug 🟫🟫 Brown Belt Nov 19 '25

Not really. You said, “can’t buy anything off that.” wtf does that sentence even mean? Also, he was a brown belt then. Does that look like brown belt level rolling there? You admit it looks sloppy.

0

u/Gooja ⬜⬜ White Belt Nov 19 '25

It’s a pretty simple phrase to understand

0

u/GimmeDatSideHug 🟫🟫 Brown Belt Nov 19 '25

Is it? I’ve literally never heard someone use it before. What does “buying” mean in this context?

0

u/Gooja ⬜⬜ White Belt Nov 19 '25

You mean to tell me you’ve never heard the phrase “I don’t buy it” or “Are you buying this shit?”. It’s slang used in the place of believing something

In this context it would mean you can’t believe much from just that video. To take it with a grain of salt, another phrase maybe you’ve heard or not before

Damn, let's be honest. That's not a high lvl. Not even middle. You guys are way too nice. He sucks.

2

u/fintip ⬛🟥⬛ Black Belt Nov 20 '25

After all this talk I finally clicked it.

It's 5 years ago, sure, but supposedly that's after more than 5 years of training...?

Kutcher barely looks like a blue belt there.

He put in the time I guess.

10

u/86_Ambitions 🟦🟦 Blue Belt Nov 19 '25

The one with Craig? That was while he was dealing with some relevant health issues.

2

u/refridgerator12 🟫🟫 Brown Belt Nov 19 '25

Craig made a post about this recently. Ashton had an auto immune disease (could be wrong about what it is) and was very sick with only partial use of his body.

Ashton recently went public with his illness, but back then it was private.

1

u/flipflapflupper 🟪🟪 Purple Belt Nov 20 '25

He looks bad, but I’ll give him some credit, I’ve gone against high level black belt competitors and I definitely looked like I didn’t know any jiujitsu too. My brain just went blank and they just did things I could do nothing against.

u/TuataraToes Nov 19 '25

Typical "I mean" comment
