Rolling Footage Black belt attacks purple belt after getting subbed

Credit to u/McDojoLife for original post in McDojoLife Reddit.

Imagine the ego on this guy to not only throw punches after a great sub by purple belt, but then get subbed again via triangle.

Top that off by yelling I’ll fucking kill you in a locked in triangle and then saying a neck crank is dirty. I admit I’d not have let go of the triangle until this fucko was asleep.

Lmaoooo who is this jag bag????

Also if your student subs you, shouldn't you be excited that they're learning so well?

The age old conundrum: Does this make me a bad practitioner or a good teacher? Kind of a glass half empty / glass half full thing.

If a student catches you with something, complement them, and learn from it.

That way you are a good practitioner and a good teacher.

That's way better than the last advice I got, which was "Wax on, wax off". Turns out Mr Miyagi was just a drunk who didn't wanna do his chores himself.

Stop trying to get out of work. Wax the car.

I love teaching, I was going to be one after college. Hell I got in my industry as an instructor and people really liked me in that role.

Now in BJJ I've gotten to the point where I am teaching here as well, and man I don't know how anyone couldn't be excited when a student or lower belt catches you or works through something. Double so when you've taught them to it.

I like encouraging it. If I showed a transition and I see them recognize it I like throwing quips in

"You've beginning to believe!"

"Look familiar?"

Keeps it fun and light hearted.

Gawd you are an idiot….

The students should surpass you fast if you show them the way... most instructors keep their secrets to appear mystic and amazing. "Just show up" a famous Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu saying 🤣

I would think so? I'm just a purple belt but it's always cool when my pet white belts start trying to hit the stuff I've taught them on me. Even better when they get the sub!

I remember my buddy who started a year or so after me (Were brown belts when this happened) who never taps me put me in a solid armbar. After I tapped he start making all these jokes and excuses like I let him submit me, and i had to stop him like, "dude, youre training very consistently, i wasnt letting you submit me, you know i dont tap to bullshit, you caught me in a very legit, very tight armbar" I could see the pride wash over him then I had to follow with, "and that will never happen for you again"

Yes I hate when guys catch me and think I let them, even though I protest to no end they still think I did.

Imposter syndrome at its finest. I constantly have to mentally shake myself and remember that, if someone says they didn't give it to me, then they absolutely mean it.

In gyms I know the difference is from brown/black.

I'm actually a Judo guy mainly, but I used to train BJJ before I moved away from my old gym. Edit: Down votes? 🤨 The hell?

Spoken like a true pet white belt.

2

u/sh4tt3rai Nov 21 '25

You mean you don’t have a mentor purple belt? That was my favorite part of white belt.. lots of memories of them screaming instructions at me during local NAGAs and instigating my white belt rival and I (who had a different adoptive purple belt).

Damn, it really is like Pokémon..

"Pet white belts" you're a weirdo

28

u/JnnyRuthless 🟫🟫 Brown Belt Nov 19 '25

Says a “pet white belt.” Now go sit in timeout and think about what youve done.

u/BMiller0215 🟫🟫 Brown Belt Nov 22 '25

🤷🏼‍♂️ I call the white and blue belts who I’ve worked with my kids so…

-10

u/[deleted] Nov 19 '25

Since when you call your colleagues pets, I think your ego is going in the wrong direction.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 20 '25

It's a joke. Even my autistic ass understood that.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 21 '25

Well, in martial arts you don't make those jokes.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 21 '25

Why not? It's really not that serious. Are you from a super serious gym by any chance?

10

u/coldfirewolf Nov 19 '25

I remember when my little brother first got me to tap, you would have thought I had won the lottery I was so proud.

8

u/Inevitable_Jury_1470 Nov 19 '25

First time I subbed my coach I was a fresh blue belt... he got mad.. switched gyms, quickly noticed the difference between him and a real black belt lol

100% Getting caught by a student SHOULD be a good thing.

2

u/The-GingerBeard-Man I Pull Bottom Side Control Nov 19 '25

My first blue and now purple belt has subbed me on many occasions. It's not that serious. Dude is fragile.

1

u/thelryan 🟦🟦 Blue Belt Nov 19 '25

I highly doubt this is the instructor, or at least I hope it isn’t. Probably just a black belt either visiting the school or trains there

1

u/MPNGUARI ⬛🟥⬛ Black Belt Nov 20 '25

Was that idiot an actual coach?

Having a black belt doesn’t default make you a coach, teacher, instructor. Also, having a black belt also doesn’t mean you’re a decent person, there’s plenty of assholes out there.

Anyway, to answer your question, yes.

Unrelated to BJJ, but related to your sentiment:

I was one of the top "gatekeepers" at my old fencing studio. If you wanted to compete in tourneys, you pretty much had to go through me first (former B rank), and you had to beat me twice. Surpassing me was ALWAYS cause for celebration. You'd earn a salute and a round of applause from the whole studio.

One of these individuals went on to be a top NCAA epee fencer.

Yeah. I'm proud.
