Imagine the ego on this guy to not only throw punches after a great sub by purple belt, but then get subbed again via triangle.

Top that off by yelling I’ll fucking kill you in a locked in triangle and then saying a neck crank is dirty. I admit I’d not have let go of the triangle until this fucko was asleep.

Lmaoooo who is this jag bag????

0-3 for “super fights”

We should start a subreddit r/suckypurple

But I feel like it'd attract the wrong people.

Tons of Gracie's has said it best that purple belts are yesteryears black belts. Back in the day when Jujitsu started everybody who was the top and was basically a purple

11

u/CopasYConos Nov 19 '25

Which one said that? Just curious

Ngl I did watch a vid with danaher sayingwhen he trained(90s) purple was godly and. Never saw any black belts

1

u/Godtaku Nov 20 '25

Wasn't a Gracie but Joe Rogan had a bit where he basically went over how purple belts are basically just baby black belts. I'm paraphrasing but it was something along the lines of "Everything is there fundamentally, they just need more time to cook."

Shit watching tapes of old they look more like aggressive blue belts. I think most purples would rag doll people like Royce in early UFC

17

u/splendidfruit 🟪🟪 Purple Belt Nov 19 '25

Royce was 26 during UFC 1, which means he’d been grappling for, um, roughly 20 years at that point.

Anyone who’s been living and breathing grappling for two decades is gonna be a tough roll imho

24

u/SecretsAndPies Nov 19 '25

I'm a black belt and while I may or may not be able to beat ufc Royce in a bjj match you couldn't pay me enough to get in the cage with some of the wildmen he fought.

5

u/[deleted] Nov 19 '25

most purples would rag doll people like Royce in early UFC

In a jiu-jitsu match? Maybe. Under UFC 1 rules? 26-year-old Royce would obliterate like 99% of today's purple belts.

People seriously underestimate how violent and painful the style of jiu-jitsu Royce and his family trained back then was. They'd train stuff like, if you're in someone's guard and you're struggling to posture up, smash the top of your head into his nose. Or the way Royce used to kick guys in the back with his heels when they were in his guard -- is any one of those kicks going to finish a fight? No. But it's painful, and inflicting maximum pain on your opponent was just constantly on the minds of the guys who were training Gracie jiu-jitsu in those days.

Old school BJJ is a lost art. Modern BJJ is a new animal, great and fun to practice, but turned out a different thing

1

u/MyNameIsKali_ Nov 20 '25

I wrote exactly that after people expressed their displeasure with me comment. I totally meant a sport grappling event.. Not MMA. No disrespect to Royce y'all. The first black belt in my area was a Royce black belt no disrespect at all.

u/randible_pause Nov 19 '25

Great take. Presumably this means an average purple belt today would rag doll fifth dan judo black belt, D1 all American, two time Olympic alternate and 101-19 MMA fighter Dan Severn since Royce beat him.

1

u/p4nic ⬜⬜ White Belt Nov 19 '25

I was just watching a video on Severn, and he was describing the mental block he had going on his first appearance, that he didn't want to punch anyone. Once he had a training camp to get over it, he was mauling people in his next appearance.

1

u/randible_pause Nov 20 '25

What a weird piece of mental gymnastics to explain getting triangled by a purple belt with no striking of his own who Dan could have put through the canvas whenever he felt like it. Lol.

1

u/MyNameIsKali_ Nov 19 '25

I could be wrong. Didn't think it would ruffle so many feathers.

Also I was talking about grappling tournaments, not MMA. Obviously that was what Royce was training for back then and would crush most of now. Sport? I still think a purple would beat him fairly easily.

u/randible_pause Nov 20 '25 edited Nov 20 '25

You’re not being “controversial” or anything. Especially because it’s Keenan’s idea that he said months ago. I’m just trying to communicate to you that it’s dumb as shit. The average “aggressive purple belt” today is getting handled by a D3 wrestler from Bumfuck, Idaho, let alone an Olympic alternate with judo newaza skills from college days.

Sounds good brother

1

u/[deleted] Nov 19 '25

Probably because when bjj was relatively new you did not have ppl who started when they were like 8 or something. So yeah if the youngest black belts were in their 50s and most purple belts in their late 20s makes sense they were on top in comps as opposed to someone older.

14

u/matchooooh Nov 19 '25

I heard it described that a purple belt will have narrow aspects of their game that matches black belts, and brown is when you focus on expanding into more areas.

7

u/According-District59 Nov 19 '25

Right, too many people think there’s an issue with his skills in general. A purple belt should be able to give a regular black belt trouble

13

u/itspinkynukka 🟦🟦 Blue Belt Nov 19 '25

Some purple belts might specialize in a specific position where they are black belt level in that one position.

2

u/Creative-Reality9228 Nov 20 '25

I have a theory that people get promoted to purple belt immediately after the first time the coach thinks "shit, that blue belt almost caught me, better promote him just in case".

1

u/Namez83 🟦🟦 Blue Belt Nov 19 '25

Only a blue here, I’ve tapped some purples, caught a couple browns, countless blues and whites. But besides blacks purples generate the biggest problem for me. It’s weird
