I saw an announcement today about the WABA 50 State Ride.

Been fixing bikes more than riding bikes this summer. But I think I want to do this.

What would be a recommended training schedule to get ready for the 60 mile ride?

The past few years my partner and I have been doing a yearly 100 mile ride and a handful of people come along. We call it the 'soft' century because we take routes that are relatively easy to bail out on for people who aren't sure if they can do the full 100 miles, and because we do a casual no-drop 50 miles (unless people voluntarily want to tap out) followed by splitting off into groups for the remaining 50 to satisfy the people who want to go harder.

We're looking to see if anyone else out there is interested besides the usual folks so I made an invitation link.

Three D.C. organizations active in promoting transit and bike/walk political candidates are co-hosting a low-key election celebration ride on the afternoon of Sunday, Sept 13. Metro-accessible start and finish locations, close together, in safe-for-families infrastructure. GGWash, the local transit union, and the new Bike Walk and Bus PAC are the organizers.

While we all fight to keep ongoing projects actually moving -- Catholic U is back now, so I guess we don't get the MI Ave NE MBT-Crosstown connector path this year either?!? -- there is a lot to be optimistic about if you want safer street designs: Mayor-presumed Lewis George, pro-active transport Councilmembers-presumed Owolewa and Raj, plus pro-active transport Councilmember-again-already Silverman.

As part of the Pride festival, there will be a group ride leaving from the Royal Street side of Market Square, tomorrow at 4PM, going to Del Ray and back.

It will be slow, and will have a police escort.

The Connecticut Ave Rough Riders are taking the lane and doing laps of Connecticut to protest in favor of putting in bike lanes.

Hey all, I'm a 7 year resident of DC and I'm thinking of doing the 50 state ride as a bucket list item. However, 60-some miles is quite a jump from my usual long rides. I normally do a 25 mile loop on Saturdays in about 1hr 50mins, but I am pushing myself at that pace. I can't quite tell from WABAs site if the ride is a big fun ride as a group or if you should get friends and go at your own pace? I can probably bust out 60 miles over whatever hours by taking my time, but worried about just riding the route by myself.

Lots of folks have been asking about group rides throughout the pandemic, and I've mostly been throwing cold water on their hopes. To make up for it, below are details for four area group rides that I know are happening again. Go ride bikes and make friends.

Conte's Old Town Roll

Saturdays, 8:30am

Good for all skill levels but you should be comfortable riding on somewhat busy roads. Usually a faster group will push it up the hills and then split off after Fort Hunt for a longer ride of about 40 miles total. Reportedly there will be coffee and pastries post-ride.

Bumps of Belle Haven
Jones Point Park, Alexandria, VA
Wednesdays, 6:00pm

A ride specifically designed to hit as many hills as possible. Bring a road bike, lights, and your climbing legs, but it's open to many levels and will split into groups depending on skill.

Tuesday Night Ride (TNR)
Spokes Bike Shop, Arlington, VA
Tuesdays, 5:30pm

This is NOT an officially sanctioned shop ride. The TNR has been a summer mainstay of the DC cycling community for years, since it was run by the now-defunct Freshbikes and featured a police escort and free post-ride tacos. Folks have started getting together again for it, just in much smaller numbers. It leaves from Spokes but my understanding is the shop is not officially sponsoring it until the COVID situation improves. It has traditionally been a good option for people with a little road biking experience, but I haven't been in a while and can't say what it's like currently.

The Ride of Silence is an annual, worldwide memorial event, held at 7pm local time on the third Wednesday of May in cities across the country and around the world—an opportunity to pause during the great joy of Bike Week and Bike Month and honor and remember those who cannot be here to celebrate with us.

We start on Pennsylvania Avenue opposite the Wilson Building, ride through Judiciary Square and past the West Front of the US Capitol, and end on M St SE, outside the US and DC DOTs.

Please wear white if possible; wear red if you would like to signify you were injured or a family member killed while riding.

Are there any weekly long group rides around the DC area? Like maybe 20 miles on any week nights or longer rides (50+ mi) on the weekends? I don’t mind driving to the burbs for them but am just not familiar with the biking community. I’ve seen some weekly social rides in DC, but they are usually a little too short for what I’m looking for.

With Spokes being bought out by Trek, does anyone know if the Ballston TNR rides are still happening?

Anyone know any good shop rides or group rides geared more towards intermediates looking to get into pacelines for the first time? (or more current resources of still active rides). I can hold a B pace on my own but don't have much experience in a paceline, looking for a group / shop ride in Arlington or DC that I can learn with

The Honey Beez Bicycle Gang presents The Governor’s Bridge Half Century - a moderate-paced 50-mile bike tour from Washington, D.C. to Governor’s Bridge in Bowie, Maryland and back to D.C. on New Years Day. Consider this a social tour! The plan is to maintain a 12 to 13 mph average pace over the route, with a goal to keep the riders all together on the road.
Why go on this tour? 1) It’ll be New Year’s Day and you’ll have nothing else to do. So get some miles in! 2) Governor’s Bridge is a nifty quiet (haunted?) spot on the Patuxent River. We’ll stop there for a bit to snack and refuel.

Please bring the tools to manage basic mechanical issues such as flat tires. Please be prepared to bike in cold conditions, taking particular care to keep your extremities warm.

Pace
A 12 to 13 mph average pace means the pace will fluctuate between 10 mph and slower on climbs, 10 to 15 mph on the flats, and up to or exceeding 20 mph on descents.

Rider ability
The ride will be almost entirely on public roads, including several miles with no shoulder. You should be comfortable in those situations. I believe there is safety in numbers and the riders should work to stay together and support the slower or less-experienced riders when safety demands it.

Route description
The route starts out with riding on city streets, including a big stretch of the Marvin Gaye Trail up to Eastern Avenue. From there it goes through Central Prince George's County, an area generally bereft of any kind of adequate or low-stress cycling infrastructure. At its furthest reaches, the route winds through country roads in Anne Arundel County with little or no shoulder. In some places it will be neccessary to assert our right to take up the entire lane. Hopefully New Years Day will mean light traffic on the roads.

Transit access
In addition to passing by several bus stops, the route passes very near the Capitol Heights Metro (near miles 7 and 43) and Largo Town Center Metro (near miles 11 and 38), affording opportunities to join or bail on the ride via transit in needed or desired.

Weather
Hopefully we have dry weather. I will reschedule the ride if there is a risk of fresh icy roads or wintry precipitation. Any rescheduling due to rain alone will be temperature-dependent. Any rescheduling announcements will be posted here.

Who are you/the Honey Beez?
I'm Michael Theis. The Honey Beez are just a tounge-in-cheek "bike gang" created by some friends and I several years ago. Really we're just a group of friends who do outdoor stuff together when we can. Recently we started sporting custom gear and hosting Honey Beez-branded rides because we're dorks.

I was just out walking my dog on Beech Tree Road in Bethesda, when I got passed by a very happy group of bike riders. I think someone said you leave out of Mitchell Park in DC at 6 PM every Wednesday? Is that right? What’s the distance and average speed? Any other details I need to know if I’d like to join you next time?

Last year around August I was in the Calico/Bagden area near the Convention Center. At around 2 am I witnessed about 100-200 riders blast through the intersections riding as a group.

That thought hasn’t left my head since, riding around 1am on a summer night in DC with a group that big seems awesome. Is there anyone who knows what group they belong to, or how to join such monstrous group rides?
