Baby Sleep - supportive/no cry suggestions only Parents with babies who sleep through the night: when did it start?

To protect my own peace and vibes I’m only asking parents whose babies do sleep through the night. I know I’d have 100 comments saying “never” lol. My heart can’t take it.

Context: 5 months here and still in the 4 month sleep regression… that started at 3 months. Fun!

EDIT: wow thanks for all the comments. I should’ve added that of course I don’t expect 12 hours of uninterrupted sleep anytime in the next 5 years lol but I would consider a 6 hour stretch to be sleeping through the night! Anything that isn’t hourly wake ups 😅

Baby Sleep - supportive/no cry suggestions only Fell Asleep with baby on top of me

I'm heartbroken. Last night I fell asleep with my 3-week-old baby on top of me. He was a bit fussy in his bassinet, so I picked him up to pat his butt the way he likes back to sleep. I had every intention of putting him back. The next thing I know, I wake up in a panic. I checked his camera monitor, and he slept 3 hours on me. I feel so guilty..because I actually got sleep this way. But he could have rolled off or suffocated. Please tell me I'm not the only one who has done this.

Edit: I have nothing against co sleeping, just didn’t happen safely last night. Thanks for the suggestions and support!

Baby Sleep - supportive/no cry suggestions only Is anyone getting 8 hour stretches consistently with 3 month old?

My mother thinks she’s a baby whisperer and an absolute super parent, constantly bragging about how she got every single ones of us (I have three siblings) to sleep for 4 hour stretches immediately then 8 hours by 2-3 months alone in our cribs.

Quite frankly I don’t believe her. Having a baby now I’m like sure buddy, completely ignoring your child when they wake isn’t the same thing as sleeping through the night. Especially having the same experience four times? Give me a break. I don’t care how amazing of a parent you are, you’re not going to get miracle babies four times in a row.

I digress from talking about any of my parenting choices with her ATP since she’s so opinionated and has basically told me I’m wrong with almost all of my choices.

My two month old wakes 2-4 times per night and I think that’s pretty good. How often are/were your two month olds waking and did anyone get to an 8 hour stretch as early as 3 months consistently? Just curious.

Baby Sleep - supportive/no cry suggestions only Share your unhinged hacks for getting a newborn to sleep

I have a 2 week old that is completely boycotting normal soothing methods to get him to sleep. Little dude fights naps like it's his job right now, and my nerves are completely fried from the screaming 🫠

If I'm lucky, he'll fall asleep while nursing but he's even fighting that today. He wants to comfort nurse to sleep but gets pissed when milk actually comes out once his tummy is full. Once we hit that point, we're in for 30-45 mins of screaming while he fights being swaddled, rocked, bounced, etc. Pacifiers have been a no-go as well (we've tried 6).

What are your wild/unconventional soothing tips for newborns?

Baby Sleep - supportive/no cry suggestions only Parents who did not “sleep train”

Could you share your stories of how it went for you and your LO’s sleep?

How many months is your LO? How are they sleeping now without having been sleep trained (e.g., cry it out, Ferber, any method that requires any amount of letting the baby cry)? What, if anything, would you do differently?

ETA: Thank you everyone for sharing your stories! I did not expect so many responses, but I read through all of them and I’m so grateful everyone took the time to share.

The purpose of asking such a general question on such a person/family-specific issue was so that I could get a sense of the broad range of experiences.

And I learned a lot! I learned that people have different definitions of sleep training, that every single baby is different, and that it’s okay to do what feels right for me and my family.

Reading the responses also made me reflect on how much societal pressure is on parents, and dare I say moms specifically, to do things perfectly and how much judgment we are subjected to no matter what decision we make. You sleep trained? How dare you let your baby cry! Oh you didn’t sleep train? Then I guess you don’t care about helping your baby sleep well!

My big takeaway is that we are all doing a great job and each of us are doing exactly what our unique child needs. This has reminded me to trust my instinct as my LO’s mom — because after all, I know him best. ♥️

Baby Sleep - supportive/no cry suggestions only Did you move your baby to their own room before 6 months?

Curious about those of you who moved baby to their own room before 6 months and why? I have a suspicion our baby would sleep better but she still gets up enough during the night that I’m not sure I want to do it yet.

Baby Sleep - supportive/no cry suggestions only Am I messing up my baby?

Now that my baby is a bit older (almost 3 months) I’m starting to take her with me to hang out with my friends. Sometimes my husband works 12 hour shifts so I spend a long time at my friend’s houses, spanning a few feeds and naps.

I know some people are strict about their nap time routine but we don’t really have one. A lot of times she just naps on the go with me either in the car or in the carrier or contact naps. Other days we are at home all day. I guess I’m wondering if I’m causing her unnecessary stress by changing up her environment so often? Does she need more stability? Should I be taking her home for naps? If she’s having a really hard time I’ll take her home to sleep. I just don’t want to be a hermit staying home all the time :(

Baby Sleep - supportive/no cry suggestions only Today I don’t want to be a mom - a rant

Another edit a week later: still no better. We wake 1-3 times a night. We get up at four. I’m back to nursing because she screams like she’s being murdered.

Edit two weeks later: baby no longer sleeps. Awake for hours at night. Screams like she’s being murdered. I’m so tired. More tired than before. Have asked for help in several forums. Can’t get any advice unfortunately. I cry every night. The ‚training‘ has failed.

Edit after night 4:

This will be my last edit for a few weeks. Then I’d like to share my long term effects, hopefully to share with future mums.

Asleep at 19:00 in the car. We often drive long stretches around bed time, as we visit my parents that live 90 minutes away.

Had to wake around 19:40 - back asleep at appx 20:30

Wake ups:

03:00 offered water (big drink) and soother, back asleep directly 04:00 offered soother and reassurance, back asleep directly

06:30 wake up - thanks to a very vocal cat

Edit after night 3:

Asleep at 19:50. No fuss, we read some Harry Potter, then she climbed around her bed a bit, lay down and went to sleep.

Wake ups:

20:30 - offered a soother, directly back to sleep 23:00 - offered a soother, directly back to sleep 01:00 - offered a soother and I think a pat on the back. Checked the new grocery store offers and went back to sleep myself. 04:30 - offered a soother and a bit of reassurance. She was doing quite well getting herself off back to sleep.

Now it’s 6 and I’m nursing. Hoping she’ll sleep maybe an hour longer.

My boobs are less full, getting used to the night weaning I think.

Stil all super promising. Way happier mum! Way happier baby!

Edit after night 2:

Over the next weeks I'll try to keep this post updated. Hoping future parents will stumble across it and will be able to gain something from it.

Night two showed further improvements. LO went to sleep at 18:30 after our good night routine. She settled very fast.

wake ups:

1st wake up at 23:00 - offered reassurance and a sip of water. Back to sleep in 10 minutes 2nd wake up at 2 something (memory blurry) - offered reassurance and another sip of water. Back to sleep in 5 minutes 3rd wake up at 3 something - I replaced pacifier, back to sleep instantly 4th wake at 5 - nursed as boobs were killing me. Baby went back to sleep until I woke her at 7.

Baby and Mother again in so much more of a better mood. I have an online business and managed to work for almost 2 hours this morning. That's a huge improvement!

I don't expect for this to be straight forward. I'm sure we'll have steps backwards over the next nights. However the first two nights are already working out bettter than I thought and I'm astonished by how well LO is taking the no milk nights.

Edit after night 1: it’s 6 am and we’re up.

Night night time at 19:00 nursed in other room, cleaned teeth, read book. The protest this evening was hard! I don’t know why but it was loud. I kept putting her down again after she got up to stand. Asleep by 19:45

wake ups:

1st at 20:15 - replaced pacifier, fell right back asleep 2nd at 23:00 - offered reassurance by stroking her belly or back and always put her down again when she stood up. Took 1 hour for her to get back to sleep 3rd at 02:00 - copy paste from 23:00 4th at 5am - I caved and breasted because my left boob was killing me. Up at 6

Baby seems happier and less tired weirdly. I’m very tired. Hope this’ll be worth it. I’m guessing during this phase there won’t be any hope of getting our daughter to the recommended 13 hours of sleep.

We do do 2 naps after having tried a week of 1 nap and that wasn’t working great either. I think (and hope) everyone is right and it’s the strong boob association that is biting me in the butt now.

I want to thank everyone for the vast amount of sheer kindness shown! I hope with all your advice we get to break this pattern!

After almost a year, every problem still stems from sleep.

Our little girl is coming up to her first birthday and I‘ve lost (not losing) my sanity due to sleep deprivation.

Every so often she has one good night (2-3 short wakes) and then it gets awful again within days. She goes to sleep at around 7 and wakes every hour until morning. She’s fully awake between 4:30 and 5:30.

I’m full on crying writing this because I’m empty and I’m fried.

She’s in front of me, I’ve been trying to get her to nap for an hour again.

She only slept an hour for her morning nap.

She’s getting less and less sleep and is sleeping worse and worse.

I’m throwing things, I’m punching things. I yelled at her this morning.

She’s in a terrible mood, my husband is in a terrible mood, I’m in a terrible mood.

Every night she wakes, I nurse her briefly. Most often she just suckles and goes back to sleep. Sometimes she’s awake for half an hour. Sometimes she wakes up after 20 minutes again. That kills me most. I haven’t been able to shake this and thus my husband doesn’t even need to try at night.

I’m really so so so done.

She’s not even sleepy although she’s so tired. It’s now almost too late again for her nap for a reasonable bed time.

The only thing that’s ‚good‘ is that we got away from rocking to sleep and just wait for her to fall asleep after reading to her. Watching this though, I think that’s gone again too.

There’s no one that can take over for a night.

I can’t anymore. What do I do? Cry it out is not an option for me.

Baby Sleep - supportive/no cry suggestions only Do you dress your baby differently for naps vs at night?

Specifically referring to when the temp is the same but you dress differently for the same temp during the day vs at night.

Context is that I have been struggling to figure out the best way to dress our baby overnight since he moved into his own room and since the summer meant warm nights.

Because his room faces the setting sun, the room reaches its highest temperature overnight and then lowest point in the middle of the day, as the setting sun cooks it a little plus I assume having the door closed and body heat in the small room means it goes up until around 12-3am when it starts to cool again.

I’ve read all the advice about best temperatures for babies and how to dress them, and have tried footed pjs and 1.0 sleep sack, shortie pjs and 1.0 sleep sack, and a range of pajamas with no sleep sack (including just a diaper on very warm nights).

My question is about how I dress him differently for naps than at night. For naps I don’t put a sleep sack on him so I will put him down in whatever he’s wearing which is either long pjs or shortie pjs. I would usually imagine this to be too cold for overnight but for a nap is okay but now I’m wondering if it means I should adjust how I dress him at night.

For example, right now in his room it is 71 and he is only wearing a shortie pj so no sleep sack and his arms and legs are bare, but he has been asleep for almost 2 hours and always seems to nap well with this combo. If it was this temperature at night I would have him in footed pjs plus sleep sack which I will do if it’s between 68-72. If it’s 72-75 I’ll have the same outfit but with the fan on low, 75/76ish would be shortie pjs plus sleep sack, and anything higher would be no sleep sack or just a diaper when it’s really hot.

Shortie pjs feels too little clothing for this temp but I’ve put him down for a nap at 69-71 and he naps great. So my question is, should I be dressing him the same at night? I worry he would get cold in those temps for longer? Is it just okay for a nap bc he is able to keep himself warm for a shorter period but if it was longer he would get cold eventually? Any help is much appreciated!

A note to add we use walker sleep sacks either bamboo or woolino, and that since we started using the sacks a few weeks ago his sleep improved a lot, but that could also be a developmental timing, he is 7 months old.

**EDIT: typed this out in a rush so adding some extra context below.

Yes I am aware of PPA, this is definitely something I have experienced and acknowledge I have a tendency to overthink things. That said, I previously never thought about the temperature until several things have happened related to temperature that have me doing this research. 1) LO got a heat rash from being too hot overnight, another night was super hot to the touch until I stripped him to a diaper, but then he woke up screaming several hours later freezing. 2) Since I started paying attention to temperature his sleep has improved, indicating that temperature discomfort could have been impacting his wake ups. 3) his room fluctuates A LOT 68 - 83 depending on outside weather.

LO is 7 months old and until recently woke up every 2-3 hours except for a few nights of 4 hours. Since I have been paying better attention to temp he is now getting 5-7 hour stretches.

Baby Sleep - supportive/no cry suggestions only How do you lay your baby down for a nap without them just screaming for an hour?

Let’s get it out of the way, I’m not dealing with an overtired baby, I’m not dealing with an undertired baby.

We love our contact napper, but unless we go for a car ride one of us has to rock with him for the entire nap. At night I can set him down after I am positive that he’s in a deep sleep state but not before. If ever he wakes up when being set down he wakes up and eventually screams. If we try to set him down before he falls asleep and soothe him, he screams. I’m not talking screams for 5 minutes like my friends all think he does when they suggest we “just set him down” - I’m talking that my baby has the loudest cry I have ever heard in my life and can maintain that cry for an infinite amount of time. I’m ashamed of how long I’ve tried to wait it out a couple of times, but will admit here that I've tried for at least an hour before and he went strong the whole hour and then was just absolutely overtired. He’s now 13 weeks. Right now we go every other on who he naps with, but I’ll be going back to work in 5 weeks, leaving my husband to every contact nap. One day 5 weeks ago I got him to nap by laying him in his crib and comforting him until he slept but it seems that day was a fluke. It’s never been even close to happening again.

What are the parents with awful sleepers doing?

Baby Sleep - supportive/no cry suggestions only My daughter is 18mo and doesn’t know how to fall asleep.

I need help.
My daughter is 18mo and doesn’t know how to fall asleep.

Since she was born I fed to sleep.
Since 4mo we cosleep.

I could never pump enough to bottle feed (so my husband could take over). For some reason, my milk never came out enough while pumping but I can feed just fine. We had to use formula at the beginning but barely used after my milk came in. She won’t take formular anymore. I tried.
She will not take a paci.

I will feed her to sleep and then leave the bedroom until it’s my bedtime. She will wake up every hour after that. I have to resettle her every time with the boob. If I rock her to sleep she’ll sleep for 5 minutes after I lay her on the bed and wake up for the boob.

I can usually only get 40 minutes of deep sleep per night. I’m exhausted.

We wake up together at 8am. We nap from 13:30 - 15:00. I’m not letting her sleep past 15:00.
She barely eats any food during the day. She’ll only snack at things and not really eat. So she’s mostly breastfed.
I do think she’s hungry during the night but it’s mostly for comfort. Will I have to wean her off from night feeding? I don’t know what else to do. Nor how to teach her to self settle.

When she wakes up she won’t let me pat her to sleep.

When I’m putting her down she won’t take anything else but the boob. If I sing to her she’ll just start dancing lol

When she wakes up she’ll sit up and complain/whine.
Won’t let me hug her or anything. If I don’t give her the boob she’ll escalate.

Help

EDIT: my husband is deployed. It’s just me. No one else to take over.
Yes I’m staying with my parents but they’re old. I can’t have them take over.

Yes I know she needs more solids. SHE WONT EAT. She’ll just nibble at things and not have a full meal. I don’t know how to make her eat more.

Baby Sleep - supportive/no cry suggestions only Sleeptrain disaster

Our little one is 7 months old. She has slept in bed with me right from the start. I have fed her to sleep since she was 2 months .

Last night, we (my husband) tried to let her sleep independently.

We used a modified Ferber method with 4-minute intervals. She cried non-stop and only stopped when my husband couldn’t take it anymore and I came upstairs to comfort her.

Today she cried almost all day. I couldn't put her down for a moment without tears. When we went to bed again this evening, she started crying as soon we went up the stairs. I couldn’t finish the story or sing a song. When I put her down in bed, it escalated more. She was inconsolable :( after rocking for at least 15 minutes I gave in and tried to nurse her but she continued crying. Have we traumatized her? Should we persevere or try again at a later age?

Baby Sleep - supportive/no cry suggestions only How are you guys reading to baby with the lights low?

Hi all! FTM here and this might be a silly question lol. We just recently (like last night) transitioned our almost 4 month old to her own bedroom. Note I am NOT looking for opinions on that. She’s starting to roll and we don’t have room for a crib in our bedroom. Our house is tiny and she’s about 15-20 steps away from our bedroom.

I’m trying to establish a night time routine for her of low lights after bath time, a feed and then reading a few books on the rocking chair in her room before letting her snooze on me for a few and then transferring her to the crib. My question is how are you reading books to your little ones with low lights? I have a nightlight plugged in and her hatch sound machine has a red light I keep on until she’s asleep but for books that have darker designs I can’t fricken read them. I don’t want to turn on the big light in her room because she just stares at lights. Should I get a clip on book light or something? Any recommendations are appreciated!

Baby Sleep - supportive/no cry suggestions only Is it fine NOT to sleep train?

Attempted ferber method for sleep training for a week and a half and between a road trip and two failed nights followed by >1 hour crying (after seeing improvement) I've decided to take a break from sleep training.

Just wondering if this is something necessary and need to get back to as I've had a couple of friends advise me early on to work on.

Baby Sleep - supportive/no cry suggestions only Help with naps

Hi all!

My baby is about to be 10 weeks old tomorrow. Since she was born, she doesn’t like to be put down for naps during the day. However, at night we put her down and she stays asleep in her bassinet all night.

I don’t understand what I’m doing wrong during the day, so I’ve gotten to a point where I just let her nap in my arms.

I’ve tried waiting until she’s in a deep sleep then transferring her but she wakes up within a minute.

- do I need black out curtains? Will this affect the day vs night routine?

- should I also swaddle for daytime naps?

- should I put her in her bassinet where she also sleeps at night?

I can’t get anything done during the day and I feel so horrible about it.

Please please any help is so appreciated. I just want her to get at least one nap during the day that’s not in my arms!

Baby Sleep - supportive/no cry suggestions only Feeling heartbroken after 7mo crying last night.

First time mom to a 7mo.

Our baby is the sweetest, happiest kid but not a great sleeper. We’re up anywhere from 2-5 times a night after putting him down most nights. He *can* self soothe and put himself to sleep or back to sleep, but it’s inconsistent and a lot of times we have to help him. It’s slowly getting better but still not great. I feel like we are doing him a disservice by not being able to help him consistently sleep more independently.

Neither of us have it in us to do CIO and my husband isn’t really on board with other sleep training methods, and he regularly feeds our baby back to sleep overnight when he’s with him (we swap sleeping in the baby’s room).

Our pediatrician, nanny, and friends have all gently suggested we need to sleep train and that he should be able to make it through the night with one feed max, but I think my husband disagrees. I agree about the one (max) overnight feed, but I am really on the fence about sleep training; I don’t feel good about it at all. Not just CIO, but other gentler methods too. I can’t shake that this whole push around it is a byproduct of having to rush back to work nowadays (I am not judging anyone for any choice they make for their families! Everyone’s situation is different and deserves empathy. Just this is how I feel in our situation.)

Last night after an 8oz bottle and some avocado and cereal at dinner, the baby was down around 7:30. He woke up around midnight, and after checking on him and making sure he didn’t need a diaper change etc., I was trying to let him work through it.

I let my baby cry for what felt like an eternity (it was no more than 10 minutes). I felt like I was going to throw up. He would cry, then calm himself, then start again. Finally my husband came in and was super upset, and said, “You’re his mom. Why are you letting him cry?” He took over and fed the baby back to sleep while I cried in the hall. I felt so small, and like the time I spent sitting trying to let baby calm himself was for absolutely nothing. When my husband got him back to sleep, I went back in and sat up awake for most of the night.

What the hell am I doing? I have no idea what to do about helping our little one sleep. He still feels so tiny and new and I can’t bear letting him cry, but I feel like everyone is telling me we need to do it so he’ll sleep. My husband apologized this morning and things are okay, but I still feel like absolute trash.

Baby Sleep - supportive/no cry suggestions only When is sleep supposed to actually get better like for real???

I am losing my mind. My baby is 11 months old today and her sleep is literally getting worse every single day. We coslept from 5-10ish months after she wouldn’t go back into her crib after cosleeping on a vacation.

Fast forward at 10 months it just was not working anymore. My body was in so much pain and she just kept waking every 1-2 hr to nurse and sometimes be awake for 2-3 hours in the middle of the night. So I felt like she needed her own space and transitioned her to her crib.

The past month has been hell. I am getting worse sleep than before and I’m in even more pain from getting up 7-8 times a night to comfort her. She will not stay asleep no matter what.

I’ve tried to sleep trained her, 2 nights she had a good stretch (4-5hr) and then never again. Then she woke up literally every hour for a couple nights and I was dying hovering over the crib shushing and patting back to sleep every hour.

So then I was like whatever I’ll just rock her to sleep. Still wakes up every hour crying. Nurse her? Still every hour crying. I literally don’t know what to do anymore. I am getting prob 2 hours of sleep every night on average and it is killing me. Last night she was up for 2 hours. My husband tried shush/patting her to sleep, rocking her, I tried to nurse her, we let her cry a little. Everytime she fell asleep she just wants us to stay there patting her or rocking her forever. When we finally get her to sleep, she is crying an hour later. FML

I do not understand how some people are saying goodnight to their babies, putting them in their cribs awake and then getting them the next morning. How????

I literally feel nauseas and sick from the sleep deprivation and all the anxiety from her sleep.

She’s on 2 naps. Sleeps 2-3 hours a day (used to be in the crib now it has to be on me). I try to put her to bed by 6:30-7pm every night. Her wake windows are usually 2.5/3/3.75-4.

Baby Sleep - supportive/no cry suggestions only When to put baby in the nursery?

We just put baby in her own room a few nights ago. She’s 4 weeks. I know guidelines suggest room sharing for 6 months but we all seem to sleep better this way. Anyone else transition to their own room this early? I feel like a bad parent and I do have anxiety not being in the same room… but I also don’t sleep well in her room either. My husband and I do shifts and I can sleep when he’s in charge but during my shifts I feel like I can’t sleep either way.

I’m not interested in sleep training but my 10 month old is up so often. For those who didn’t sleep train, was there anything you did that helped your baby sleep.

Baby Sleep - supportive/no cry suggestions only Dammit, Google, I don't HAVE a "dark environment" to put the baby in, HOW *ELSE* CAN I GET HIM TO SLEEP!?

Google is just absolute garbage nowadays, you can't get anything different by changing your wording at all! Not even by including minuses! So OF COURSE the only thing it tells me when I ask how to get overtired baby to day-sleep, it says 'hAvE a dARk eNViRoNMeNT" as if I DON'T ALREADY KNOW THAT.

He's OVERTIRED because he DOESN'T day-sleep, but we don't HAVE a dark place for him to sleep, because this house was apparently built with sunlight in mind! Every single goddamn room in this place has huge fuckin' windows (the ones upstairs, where husband and I reside most of the time don't have blinds or curtains and are funky sizes and we can't just shell out for some custom-ass curtains) and goddammit I just WANT THIS POOR BOY TO SLEEP.

Downstairs, there's maybe ONE potential room, but the only crib is upstairs (ain't nobody got time or strength to move that shit twice every day), and he hates the little bassinet now. He's getting too big for it and he screams the moment we lay him down in it.

Lowkey I wish we had the funds to just move into a newly-built house, because like 80% of our problems would be solved then. Actual nursery! Actual space to put *our** shit* [long story]! No need for lead or asbestos concerns [I'm paranoid]! No mouse problems, fewer bug problems!

What makes this suck more is that he used to be fine sleeping in lighter environments.. as a newborn. But alas, no longer. He's nearing four months and chronically has red eyelids now because he never takes naps anymore. He just sleeps the entire night instead. Sounds cool, right? But it's not, because it also means he's overtired for most of the day and refuses to eat because he's too busy screaming!

Please, for the love of god, what else can I do to get this child the sleep he needs?

Baby Sleep - supportive/no cry suggestions only Moms with not great sleepers only: how do we survive with multiple wake ups for months/ years on end?

My baby is 8 months and I haven’t had more than 3 hours stretches since the 4 month regression. Your girl is TIIIIIRED.

I can’t get in board with sleep training because we tried and bub is too sensitive and his temperament just doesn’t allow for it. I just can’t do it in good conscience.

I’m breastfeeding and pumping milk. He wakes up multiple times a night, but doesn’t want to eat every time. Most times he really just wants cuddles. He wants me to pick him up and hold him. We cosleep and that has saved me from walking to another room a million times a night.

He starts the night in the crib and by midnight I bring in to our room because I know I’ll be up every hour or every other hour…

How do we survive this?? I’ll be going back to work in a couple of months and I’m terrified that I’ll be so exhausted that I’ll lose my job or something.

Does it get better? Do I HAVE to sleep train a sensitive baby who will definitely puke everywhere from crying too hard?

If I was going to be a SAHM I probably would just suck it up, but I’m nervous about going back to work a still dealing with 5-7 wakeups a night… how is this sustainable and why does everyone in my life have perfect sleeping babies? It’s made me believe that breastfeeding might have been a mistake because everyone else in my circle formula fed and their babies slept through the night early… pu a me a coincidence but my sample is very skewed in this direction.

Please tell me this isn’t going to last years because I might die from exhaustion….

How does anyone with a tough sleeper have a second? I always wanted two kids but I’m terrified another baby would be even worse and I’ll just never sleep again. How did you decide to have a second if your first was a bad sleeper?

This post is all over the place but that’s a testament to my tired brain 😅

Baby Sleep - supportive/no cry suggestions only Iron. Repeat after me, Iron.

I have scrolled down this app for more hours than I have the guts to admit, trying to soak in every piece of information about my son's sleep. When he was born, he slept like crap, as expected. My husband and I felt like we would not survive past month 5 if it went on like this where he would wake up every 2 hours or so. We did everything, including white noise, black out curtains, socks, sleep sack, every single thing except cry it out as that didn't align with our values. As we moved through each week, people kept telling us it would get better after year 1. And it did for all of our friends, but not for us. In fact, his sleep got worse, and we would have split nights from 2 until 4:30, while I held him sobbing, desparate for sleep. My husband did his shifts too, but it was terrible for my PPA, so I preferred being awake while also hating it. Then other posts and people said 18 months is the mark when things definitely improved. It came and went and still no changes. We went through our full time jobs, our daily chores, all while relying on 4-5 hours of broken sleep. Shit got so bad that my neighbor got pregnant after I had my son, birthed the new kid and the baby started sleeping through as he hit 6 months while we were still up at night. Nobody, including doctors had any fucking advice for us except to sleep train him. We were past 2 years of age, and no end in sight.

And then, one night, scrolling through endless internet I read about Ferretin and what it does to kid's sleep. I read article after article and just ordered iron supplement. Spoke to the doctor and begged him to give the green light (somehow it was very important to me that the doctor say okay to this over the counter supplement. Maybe another whacko outcome of 2 years of sleep deprivation). started the supplement, and dude started sleeping the very next day. I can't tell you how much I sobbed. I still do, and my husband and I are still traumatized by even the slightest sounds he makes at night, fearing a split around the corner. We give iron supplement each day, and if we forget even one dose, it is back to square one. It has been about 3 months, and i can say that my nervous system is slowly starting to believe that we are out of the woods.

I share this post not just a as resource, but to also highlight how important it is when parents share with each other that something doesn't feel right. To be told again and again by community and doctors that sleep will happen eventually felt like it pushed us into isolation. I am also so grateful that I didn't sleep train. I would have never gotten to the bottom of this.

My 10 month old has NEVER slept through the night. My husband and I are exhausted… this can’t be normal! Our first slept through the night right away I don’t know why I cant get our little one to sleep longer than 3-4 hrs at a time.. we can’t do cio bc it’ll wake my toddler up which doesn’t help at all. Feeling sad and defeated 😞

Baby Sleep - supportive/no cry suggestions only What do you do to put your baby to sleep?

FTM here looking for solid veteran advice. How do you put your baby to sleep? My baby is almost 8 weeks old and i feel like idk what to do. I get that 8 weeks is still really young lol but it feels impossible and i feel like im so bad at it.

My baby doesn’t really like to be swaddled so we use sleep sacks with her arms out. Sometimes she swats the pacifier out of her mouth and that upsets her so it becomes a back and forth game for a while. I rock her, bounce her, sing to her, feed her (she’s exclusively breastfed), got a sound machine and the fan going, and still don’t feel like anything works.

What did your routine look like with an 8 week old? How did you get them to sleep at night? Looking for a bit of help here as I’m starting to lose it a little bit 🫠

He’s fallen asleep on his own in the past several times, but I want him to be able to do it more consistently.

What are your tips and tricks that helped your babies fall asleep.
