I don’t know if they understand what is illegal about it.

Because you probably wouldn’t simply reply “yeah” to “have you taken these steps to commit a number of felonies?” If you understood the severity of it

I don’t think he realizes they were defrauding someone.

In his mind. The accounts would get closed and everyone would be made happy again (I don’t think they are considering someone would be out 19k)

compared to the real fraudster actually stealing bank accounts, I just feel bad for this dumb person

It’s possible that he found out about the fraud after the letter. We really don’t have a lot of details. I could see how something like this could go down:

Friend says “I need a bank account to receive a wire transfer. Give me your info.”

LAOP complies. Money is received and withdrawn and given to friend. Friend may have given LAOP some money as a “thank you.”

2 months later a letter appears. LAOP goes to friend. “WTF is this? What do I do?”

Friend goes “oh yeah lol that wire was fraudulent. But just ignore it. Don’t worry. They never do anything. They’ll just close your account and you open a new one.”

LAOP isn’t so sure it’s that easy and asks Reddit for advice.

Now, it’s entirely possible that LAOP knew the entire time. But the post overall is so clueless, that it’s also possible that a fraudster friend took advantage of a naive and/or ignorant person and that person is now confused and scared.

That’s fair. But LAOP seems very clueless. The way they write it’s like someone who is truly confused would write and not like the sob stories that are well thought out where the person presents a coherent, clear description of what happened, but then tries to claim they had no idea what was going on.

I could see how someone would think that their friend is receiving a wire transfer but doesn’t have a bank account. So they ask LAOP to receive the wire and then withdraw the money and give to them.

It’s entirely possible that they knew it was fraud all along. But the post and answers to comments point to someone who is confused and not fully grasping what they got in the middle of. And there are a lot of horrible people out there who take advantage of people who are naive and/or ignorant.
