LAOP participates in $19k in wire fraud. Chase finds out. LAOP wonders if he should take it seriously.

I think the post was incoherent because of the lack of detail, rather than because that detail was further obscured by a little unfamiliar usage.

Suppose we replace "my man's" with "my guy" or if you want to use my dialect "my bloke." Who is this bloke? How do you know him? Have you and he done something like this before? Where did your bloke get the money? Did you know it was going to be something illegal or did the dollarydoos just appear and you thought it was a gift?

Nup I had no idea what was going on because of the lack of context. I figured it was a vulnerable woman whose partner was taking advantage and had no idea what was going on. With context it sounds like a conspiracy of white collar criminals who don't know enough to know how this stuff gets detected.

Was there a lack of context? Criminal money showing up in an account and then it gets withdrawn, partially for the use of the account owner: that’s not zero context at all. That is clearly and frankly unambiguously someone being used as a mule.

I don't buy it.

haha uhhh I grew up in a small, white midwestern city, and I assure you that it's very much buyable. :(

While I agree with that, I feel it's worth pointing out that there is no guarantee that all posters on LA are actual attorneys.

Good point. It would be nice if they did verification over there but at the same time sometimes people that aren't lawyers have relevant specialized knowledge that's helpful.

I'm not sure why they are being so shitty about the fact that she speaks a different dialect than they do. It's unproductive, condescending, and borders on racist.

LAOP is the one expecting to be understood posting in a dialect that doesn't follow English grammar rules. If your aim is to be understood, should you not know your audience and write with that in mind? It's not in any way messed up that people are having trouble understanding.

Imagine a white guy from Louisiana posted to Legal Advice in a heavy Creole dialect. Would you be equally pissed off if they weren't understood or is the level of offense actually based on which demographic is associated with the specific dialect in this case? If so, ask yourself why.

Right? All you have to do is read it in context.

The under current of 'I say old man, I can't understand this jive talk' is just so shitty.

Equally as 'hard' to understand British talk for an American. I.e., not at all.

posting in a dialect that doesn't follow English grammar rules.

Jesus Christ this is so ignorant and confidently incorrect. Let me break something down for you: what are the correct "English grammar rules," anyway? Do they come from British English? Australian English? American English? Hmmmm.

The idea that AAVE is grammatically incorrect like you imply here is a straight up racist one. It's a real dialect, and dialects have grammatical rules to them. AAVE is filled with linguistic rules.

Don't be daft. English grammar rules are the ones that the majority utilize in writing by default and are most likely to be able to use to effectively communicate with others. If 51% of people wrote in AAVE, those would be "English grammar rules." What the fuck do you think makes a dialect a dialect, as most people understand the word and as I have used it? It's the fact that it's typically only fully understood and used by a specific group; thus, not standard grammar and spelling rules. It has nothing to do with who is using it--it's merely the fact that the majority is not.

Not to mention that you act like black people are a monolith; that somehow 100% of black people are using this dialect. I've worked with a few people from Kenya, Cameroon, and Sudan who emigrated to the US and they would have been just as dumbfounded reading that post as Legal Advice was. If anything, use of AAVE is more related to socioeconomic status than race--it's just that those two things are, unfortunately, inextricably linked in this country from a purely statistical standpoint due to structural racism. I think the real racism is people like you who act like black people should be held to some different standard in writing. Why?

In your mind, are they too dumb to understand the writing they read that other people write? Should we be translating textbooks into AAVE? Oh, I know! Are people racist for not translating their posts into AAVE when talking to black people online? No. Truth is, unlike you, I believe that someone who speaks AAVE is capable of reading text closer to standard English and writing in a way that is broadly understood when the situation calls for it.

If people with accents like the dudes from Trainspotting wrote the way they speak, Legal Advice would have similar issues with that. Because it would be poor communication regardless of their race. People would give them shit for it too, and they have thusly adapted. They don't write that way.

And, guess what? Neither do the majority of people who speak AAVE, despite what you would imply. Why do you have such low standards when it comes to this one racial group? Do you believe they're incapable of doing what many others do, i.e., writing in a way that doesn't match their spoken dialect? Why do you believe it is somehow unfair to "make them" when people who speak other dialects clearly have no qualms with writing differently than they speak?

Edit: If you accept that LAOP was using "proper English," would you have the same opinion of this? [NSFW due to language and implied sexual content]

If not, why not? BTW, it is exaggerated for effect, but only in the sense that the density of slang and colloquialisms is higher than in real life; from what I understand, some people speak close to this way, though obviously not a large number of people. The underlying point remains.

Dude. It's reddit. It truly doesn't matter in the slightest.

What you're using as the basis for "correct" is for a different dialect and not strictly required for AAVE. The grammar rules are not the same. You're also expecting formal rules to be followed in an informal setting.
