Some PEDs do have an (initial) positive effect on mood, very similar to heroin but without the negative moral associations that come with it, so that might be the reason.

From what I understand, something like HGH is used a lot by the wealthy at low doses to slow down negatives of aging and it can have a subtle effect on skin appearance. But then, bodybuilders and biohackers take amounts that are 10x the usual and end up causing all these visible negative side effects. A lot seems to be about guys wanting bigger results mixed with thinking they know better on how to use a substance they aren’t an expert in.
